Day 1: Arrival in Algiers
Welcome to Algeria! Start your trip in the lively capital, Algiers. After arriving, check into your hotel and take some time to rest. For those feeling energized, you can stroll along the Martyrs’ Memorial and enjoy views of the city from this iconic site.
In the afternoon, head to the Kasbah of Algiers. This UNESCO-listed area is filled with narrow streets, traditional houses, and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. Immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, and don’t be shy to chat with vendors. Grab some traditional Algerian food like brik at a local café.
Day 2: Explore Algiers
Today, dive deeper into Algiers’ charms. Start with a visit to the Bastion 23 (Palais des Raïs), a historical palace complex right along the sea. It’s a peaceful place to learn about the Ottoman past of Algeria.
Lunch at one of the many restaurants in downtown Algiers, then visit the Notre Dame d’Afrique Basilica. The views over the city from here are breathtaking. End the day at the Jardin d’Essai, Algiers’ botanical garden. You can unwind, walk through lush greenery, and people-watch.
Day 3: Tipaza and Roman Ruins
Take a day trip to Tipaza, about an hour from Algiers. This coastal town is home to ancient Roman ruins by the sea, offering incredible views. You can explore the Roman ruins, including an amphitheater and basilica.
After exploring, enjoy a seafood lunch at a local restaurant along the coast. In the late afternoon, visit the Tomb of the Christian, an ancient royal mausoleum nearby. Return to Algiers in the evening to relax and reflect on the day.
Day 4: Setif and Djemila
Take an early morning train or bus to Setif. After arriving, visit the Setif Archaeological Museum, which showcases amazing mosaics and artifacts from Algeria’s Roman period.
In the afternoon, head to Djemila, a well-preserved Roman town and another UNESCO site. The scenery around Djemila is stunning—Roman ruins surrounded by mountains. Return to Setif for the night.
Day 5: Constantine
Travel to Constantine, one of Algeria’s most stunning cities, perched on cliffs and famous for its bridges. After arriving, head to the Sidi M’Cid Bridge, which offers excellent views over the gorge beneath.
In the afternoon, explore the ancient Casbah and visit the Palace of Ahmed Bey. Both provide insight into Constantine’s history and culture. Try local dishes like couscous or rechta (a type of Algerian pasta) for dinner.
Day 6: Timgad
Today, take a day trip to Timgad, the “Pompeii of Africa.” This ancient Roman city is majestic—you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Explore temples, a theater, and well-preserved streets.
You can easily spend hours wandering through the ruins. Find a quiet spot to soak in the history. In the evening, head back to Constantine for some downtime and relaxation.
Day 7: Ghardaia
Fly or take a bus from Constantine to Ghardaia, located in the heart of the M’Zab Valley. This UNESCO heritage site has unique desert architecture and a deep sense of spirituality, as it’s home to the Ibadi Muslim community.
Explore the local markets and get lost in the maze of narrow streets. Don’t forget to try dates and sweets—some of the best in Algeria. Stay overnight in a traditional guesthouse to really experience the local culture and hospitality.
Day 8: M’Zab Valley
Spend the day visiting different towns in the M’Zab Valley, including Beni Isguen and Melika. Each town is unique, and you’ll learn more about the Ibadi culture here.
Take your time walking around these communities. The pace of life here is slow and simple, so it’s a perfect opportunity to decompress. Enjoy a relaxed evening in Ghardaia.
Day 9: Back to Algiers
Head back to Algiers either on an early morning flight or by overnight bus. Take today to do some last-minute exploring or shopping. Visit souvenir shops in the Casbah or enjoy a cup of sweet mint tea at a café.
If you haven’t visited already, go see the Bardo Museum or the Museum of Modern Art to dive deeper into Algeria’s art and history scene. Relax in the evening, and enjoy the last taste of Algerian cuisine.
Day 10: Departure
On your final day, take it easy. Depending on your flight time, you could enjoy a slow morning walk along the waterfront. Gather your memories and snaps—Algeria has left you with plenty!
