Day 1: Arrive in Algiers
Start your trip by arriving in Algiers, the capital of Algeria. You’ll want to spend time exploring the Casbah, the historic old town filled with narrow streets, markets, and Ottoman-era buildings. It’s a great way to experience local life and architecture.
Don’t miss the Martyrs’ Memorial, a towering monument that commemorates Algeria’s struggle for independence. It’s a good spot for photos and offers a panoramic view of the city.
In the evening, stroll along the waterfront at the Jardin d’Essai du Hamma, where locals gather, and you can enjoy the serene botanic garden.
Day 2: Algiers (Museums and Culture)
Spend your second day exploring some of Algiers’ museums. Start with the Bardo Museum to learn about Algeria’s prehistoric history. The building itself is beautiful and worth the visit.
Next, check out the Museum of Antiquities and Islamic Art, where you can see Roman and Islamic artifacts. This will give you deeper insight into the country’s diverse history.
In the afternoon, visit the Notre Dame d’Afrique basilica, a stunning cathedral with sweeping views of the Mediterranean. It’s an amazing spot to relax and take in the view.
Day 3: Tipaza
Take a day trip to Tipaza (about 1.5 hours west of Algiers). This coastal town is home to some well-preserved Roman ruins, including an amphitheater and ancient temples. The views of the sea make it even more spectacular.
Wander around the archaeological site, then head to the town’s seafront for some fresh seafood. It’s a quiet and relaxing escape from the bustling city. Head back to Algiers in the evening for a good night’s rest.
Day 4: Flight to Constantine
In the morning, catch a short flight (about 1 hour) to Constantine, known as the “City of Bridges.” Once you arrive, start by walking across the famous Sidi M’Cid Bridge. The views over the dramatic gorge are breathtaking.
Visit the Emir Abdelkader Mosque, which is one of the largest mosques in Africa. The architecture is stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a great place to pause and enjoy the city.
Before the day ends, visit the Ahmed Bey Palace, a well-preserved building that transports you to the past with its beautiful gardens and finely detailed interiors.
Day 5: Explore Constantine
Spend your day visiting the Cirta Museum to dive deeper into the history of Constantine and Algeria. The museum has collections of ancient Roman artifacts, as well as Islamic art and traditional Algerian cultural pieces.
Next, explore the ruins of Tiddis, a short drive from Constantine. This ancient Roman site is less known but offers sweeping views and a more peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience. Make sure to look for the rock carvings and ancient roads.
In the afternoon, wander around the city center and enjoy the local cafes and pastry shops. Constantine has a more laid-back vibe compared to Algiers, so take it easy.
Day 6: Ghardaïa (M’Zab Valley)
In the morning, fly to Ghardaïa to explore the M’Zab Valley. This UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its unique desert architecture and traditional way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. The town is divided into smaller villages, and each has its own charm.
Spend your day walking around the winding streets, learning about the local culture, and maybe visiting a local market. The architecture in Ghardaïa is unlike anything else you’ll see in Algeria.
Take the afternoon to relax and soak in the unique desert atmosphere. The pace here is slower, giving you time to reflect on the incredible experiences of your trip so far.
Day 7: Return to Algiers
Fly back to Algiers in the morning. Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend your last few hours picking up souvenirs in the city’s many markets or enjoying one final coffee along the waterfront.
If you have more time in Algiers, consider visiting the Ketchaoua Mosque or wandering a bit more around the Casbah to immerse yourself once more in this incredible city.
