Day 1: Arrive in Luanda
Welcome to Angola! Start your journey by landing in Luanda, Angola’s capital. Take it easy today; you’ve probably had a long flight. Get settled into your accommodation and wander around your neighborhood for some local flare. Head to Ilha do Cabo for dinner. It’s a vibrant strip with seafood restaurants and beach views to get you relaxed.
Day 2: Explore Historic Luanda
Today, dive into the culture of Luanda. Check out the Fortaleza de São Miguel, a historical fort with panoramic views of the city and bay. Then, take a stroll through the Marginal Promenade. For lunch, try a local dish like muamba de galinha, a chicken stew made with palm oil. Afterwards, visit the Museu Nacional de Antropologia to learn about Angola’s rich cultural history. In the evening, head to a bar for some live kuduro music, a popular Angolan genre.
Day 3: Day Trip to Kwanza River
Leave the city behind for a retreat to the Kwanza River. It’s one of Angola’s most important rivers. Spend the morning on a boat tour, where you can spot birds and even crocodiles. Bring a picnic and relax by the river in the afternoon. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are options for fishing or kayaking tours too.
Day 4: Drive to Kissama National Park
It’s time for a safari! Drive to Kissama National Park, just over an hour from Luanda. The park is home to elephants, giraffes, and various antelopes. Book a guided safari for the best chance to spot wildlife. After your safari, enjoy some downtime at your lodge. The night skies here are incredible, so don’t miss the chance for some stargazing.
Day 5: Relax & Enjoy Kissama National Park
Spend the morning on another game drive or take a walking tour with a local guide. Kissama offers different perspectives based on the time of day, and mornings are prime time for spotting larger animals. In the afternoon, opt for some relaxation by the lodge pool or take an easy nature walk on your own. Recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.
Day 6: Travel to Benguela
Travel south towards Benguela, about a 6-hour drive from Luanda. It’s a coastal city famed for its colonial architecture and beaches. Stop along the way in Lobito for lunch and enjoy the beautiful coastline. Once in Benguela, unwind at your hotel or guesthouse. If you have some energy, head out to the nearby beach, Praia Morena, to catch the sunset.
Day 7: Explore Benguela
Start your day exploring Benguela’s charming old town. Visit Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, one of Angola’s oldest churches. Take a leisurely walk through the local markets to pick up some handmade crafts or textiles. After lunch, head to Baía Azul, a beautiful blue-water bay where you can swim or simply relax on the beach.
Day 8: Drive to Lubango
Say goodbye to the coast and head inland towards Lubango, about a 5-hour drive. The landscape changes dramatically as you move towards the mountains. After arriving, spend the afternoon at leisure. Lubango is cooler than other areas, so take advantage of the refreshing climate. For dinner, try a local favorite like grilled fish or peri-peri chicken.
Day 9: Visit Tundavala Gap
One of the most dramatic views in Angola, the Tundavala Gap, awaits you today. It’s a cliffs-edge viewpoint with stunning views of the landscape below. You can either take a short hike or drive straight to the viewpoint. After soaking in the views, return to Lubango and enjoy a relaxed afternoon exploring the city or visiting local landmarks like Christ the King statue.
Day 10: Wrap Up in Lubango
It’s your last day in Angola! Enjoy a slow morning in Lubango before heading back to Luanda by plane (or by car if you’d rather take the scenic route). Depending on your flight schedule, spend the night in Luanda or catch your evening flight home. Either way, celebrate your trip with a final Angolan meal and reflect on all you’ve seen and experienced. Angola’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture will leave you wanting more.
