Day 1: Luanda – Exploring the Capital
Start your journey in Angola’s capital, Luanda. This city is vibrant and full of life, and it has a fascinating blend of modern and colonial influences.
In the morning, visit the Fortaleza de São Miguel. This 16th-century fortress offers beautiful views of the city and harbor, and you will learn a bit about the country’s history. Afterward, walk around the Marginal, Luanda’s bay area, where you can enjoy a nice stroll along the coast.
For lunch, try some Angolan cuisine at one of the local restaurants. Dishes like mufete (grilled fish) and calulu (a vegetable stew) are must-tries if you want to experience local flavors.
In the evening, head to Ilha do Mussulo, a stretch of beach just outside the city. This is the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. You can enjoy fresh seafood while watching the sunset.
Day 2: Day Trip to Kissama National Park
On your second day, take a day tour to Kissama National Park. Located about 70 kilometers from Luanda, this park gives you a chance to see Angola’s wildlife. You’ll spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, and many types of birds. It’s not as crowded as other safari parks in Africa, which makes it feel serene and untouched.
You’ll want to go early in the morning since that’s when the animals are most active, and it’s also cooler. Make sure to pack some sunscreen and snacks for the ride. Most guides will take you on a half-day tour, so you’ll be back in Luanda by mid-afternoon, with plenty of time to rest and regain your energy for the next day.
Day 3: Benguela – History and Beaches
Fly or take a bus (a roughly 5 to 6-hour trip) to Benguela. This coastal city has stunning beaches and is known for its laid-back vibe.
Once you arrive, head straight to Praia Morena. It’s a great spot to relax, swim, or even grab a cold drink while soaking in the sun. Make sure to explore the city’s old town area, where the colonial architecture still stands tall. You can visit Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Populo, Benguela’s main church built in the 17th century.
Spend your afternoon at Restinga Beach. This area is less crowded and great for a peaceful evening. If time allows, enjoy some grilled fish at a local spot nearby before calling it a night.
Day 4: Lobito – A Laid-Back Port Town
Just a 30-minute drive from Benguela is Lobito, another coastal town that’s worth visiting. It’s a slower, quieter place, which is perfect for a relaxed day. Head to Lobito’s sandspit, Restinga de Lobito, an area that’s popular with locals for lounging by the water.
Grab an early brunch at one of the cafés overlooking the beach. You can spend your afternoon walking along the Lobito Harbor and watching the local fishermen at work. If you feel adventurous, there are also opportunities to try some water sports here, like windsurfing or sailing.
End your day with some fresh seafood at a local eatery before heading back to Benguela for the night.
Day 5: Lubango – Scenic Views and Nature
On Day 5, hop on a bus or catch a short flight to Lubango, located in the southern part of Angola. Lubango is known for its cooler temperatures and beautiful landscapes.
Start your day with a drive to the Cristo Rei statue, which has an amazing panoramic view of the city. It’s similar to the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Afterward, head to Tundavala Gap. The view from this cliffside is breathtaking, and easily one of the most impressive landscapes in the country.
If you’re into hiking, you can take one of the short scenic trails nearby for a better look at Angola’s natural beauty. Lubango’s pace is slower, so take your time, and by the evening, you can dine in one of the cozy restaurants near your hotel.
Day 6: Leba Mountain Road
One of the highlights of visiting Lubango is driving through the famous Leba Mountain Pass. This road is full of hairpin turns as it zigzags down the mountain. It’s an incredible scenic drive that will leave most travelers in awe of how the mountains meet the plains below.
There are plenty of lookout points where you can stop to take photos or simply enjoy the views. After this drive, head back into Lubango for a relaxed afternoon. Enjoy a local meal or visit the town’s central market before settling into a quiet evening in the cool mountain air.
Day 7: Namibe – Desert Meets the Sea
End your trip by exploring Namibe, which is about a 3-hour drive from Lubango. Namibe is a unique spot in Angola because this is where the desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, with stunning desert landscapes running right up to the beach.
Spend your morning at Praia das Miragens (Mirages Beach), where the desert sands and blue waters create a striking contrast. Later, visit the nearby Namibe Desert to see the famous welwitschia plant, one of the world’s oldest living plants, and a symbol of resilience.
In the afternoon, take a tour of the local fishing villages nearby to learn more about the life of coastal Angolans. Finish off your trip with some fresh seafood by the beach before heading back to Lubango for your final night.
