14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Benin



Day 1: Arrival in Cotonou

After arriving in Cotonou, take it easy with a relaxed evening in the city. Grab a bite at a local “maquis” (street restaurant) to sample traditional dishes like grilled fish, pate, and akassa.

Chill at your accommodation, whether it’s a hotel or a guest house. You’ll need the energy for the days ahead!

Day 2: Explore Cotonou

Start with a visit to the Dantokpa Market, one of West Africa’s largest markets. You’ll find everything here: souvenirs, clothes, and fresh produce.

In the afternoon, head to Artisanal Center to check out local crafts such as carvings, textiles, and art.

Wrap up the day with a sunset walk along Fidjrosse Beach.

Day 3: Ganvié – The Venice of Africa

Just outside Cotonou is the stilt village of Ganvié. Take a boat ride to fully see why this place is called the “Venice of Africa.”

Spend your day learning about the rich history of this Water Village and the Toffin people who live there.

In the evening, return to Cotonou for some downtime or try another tasty maquis.

Day 4: Ouidah – Roots and Slavery History

Drive to Ouidah, a town full of history. Start at the City Museum, where you’ll learn about Benin’s role in the Atlantic slave trade.

Next, take the “Route of Slaves,” which ends at the Door of No Return, one of the most powerful monuments in West Africa.

End the day with a stop at Ouidah Beach for a moment of reflection.

Day 5: Sacred Forest and Python Temple

Still in Ouidah, today is all about Benin’s spiritual traditions. Visit the Sacred Forest to see statues of deities and learn about Vodun, the country’s religion.

Next, visit the Python Temple where locals worship pythons. Don’t miss out on some time interacting with these revered snakes!

Wrap up with some downtime in the peaceful palm-lined town.

Day 6: Grand-Popo Beach

It’s time for some relaxation! Head to Grand-Popo, a beach town located west of Cotonou.

Spend the day chilling on the beach or enjoying fresh seafood by the water. It’s a perfect spot to just unwind and recharge.

Day 7: Take a Journey to Abomey

Say goodbye to the coast for now and head inland to Abomey, the historic capital of the Dahomey Kingdom.

Check into your stay and prepare for tomorrow’s full dive into this former powerful kingdom.

Day 8: Explore Abomey Royal Palaces

Today, get ready for a history lesson at the royal palaces of Abomey. These UNESCO-listed sites housed the powerful kings of Dahomey.

The museum inside will give you insight into the past rulers and how they shaped the region. You’ll also see artifacts like royal thrones and weapons.

Take a late-afternoon stroll through the town’s quiet streets before calling it a night.

Day 9: Travel to Dassa-Zoumé

Get on the road early for the town of Dassa-Zoumé. Known for its religious importance, it’s a key site for Catholic pilgrims.

Start by visiting the famous Basilica of Our Lady of Arigbo. The surrounding landscape is dotted with stunning rock formations worth seeing.

Finish your day by enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of this small town.

Day 10: Natitingou and the Tata Somba Villages

Hop on a bus to Natitingou, the gateway to the Atakora Mountains and the fascinating Tata Somba villages.

Visit these traditional clay homes that are unique to northern Benin. The locals still live and farm following ancient ways here, offering an authentic peek into rural life.

Day 11: Pendjari National Park Safari

Head to Pendjari National Park, one of West Africa’s top spots for wildlife. Get ready for a safari to spot lions, elephants, buffaloes, and hippos.

After a day of excitement, enjoy a relaxing evening at the park’s lodge, surrounded by nature.

Day 12: Exploring Around Pendjari

If you’re up for it, spend another day in and around the national park for another chance to see wildlife.

If you want to take it easy, you can relax or take short hikes through the park’s scenic spots.

Day 13: Head Back to Cotonou

Time to go back to civilization! Travel back to Cotonou for your last night’s stay. You can use this time to load up on last-minute souvenirs or simply rest.

Day 14: Departure

Depending on your flight time, you may have a few more hours to explore. Take a morning stroll or sip on one last cup of Benin’s coffee before heading to the airport.
