Ultimate 7-Day Itinerary for Discovering Burkina Faso

Day 1: Arrive in Ouagadougou

Start your trip in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou. Take it easy today after your flight and spend some time getting familiar with the city.

Head to the National Museum of Burkina Faso. It’s small but gives you a good look at local culture and crafts.

In the evening, explore Grand Marché, the city’s main market. Grab some traditional street food like brochettes (meat skewers) or tô, a local dish made from millet or maize.

Day 2: Explore Ouagadougou

This morning, visit Laongo Sculpture Symposium. It’s an outdoor space filled with amazing sculptures carved into natural rock by international and local artists.

Afterward, head over to Bangr Weogo Park. It’s right in the center of the city and offers a quiet spot to relax and see some of the local wildlife.

In the afternoon, visit the Village Artisanal for handmade crafts like textiles, leather goods, and jewelry. It’s a perfect spot to pick up unique souvenirs.

Day 3: Day Trip to Bazoule Crocodile Lake

Take a half-day trip to Bazoule Crocodile Lake, just a short drive from Ouagadougou. Here, you can get ridiculously close to sacred crocodiles, a unique experience in Burkina Faso.

Don’t worry; the crocodiles are well-fed and considered sacred by the locals, but still, it’s a crazy adrenaline rush.

Head back to Ouagadougou in the late afternoon and chill at a local café.

Day 4: Bobo-Dioulasso

Take a bus or drive to Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso’s second-largest city. The ride gives you a look at the rural side of the country.

Once you arrive, explore the city’s Grand Mosque. It’s a beautiful example of traditional Sahel-style architecture.

Before the day ends, visit the old Bobo Dioulasso market, which has been around for over a century and sells everything from spices to traditional clothing.

Day 5: Cultural Day in Bobo-Dioulasso

Spend your morning visiting the Houet Museum. This small museum showcases Burkina Faso’s cultural diversity through artifacts and exhibits.

In the afternoon, check out the nearby Kibidwé District. This old town area gives you a feel of the city’s history and has some really cool craft workshops where artisans work on pottery and weaving.

End your day with some live music at a local bar. Bobo-Dioulasso has a vibrant music scene, and you’ll often find live performances of traditional Burkinabé music.

Day 6: Banfora and Sindou Peaks

From Bobo-Dioulasso, take a side trip to Banfora. Start by visiting the Sindou Peaks, a surreal formation of rock spires. It’s an amazing spot for hiking and photography.

Later in the afternoon, visit Karfiguéla Waterfalls. Take a dip in the pools and relax after exploring the Sindou area.

Stay overnight in Banfora to save yourself some driving time, or head back to Bobo-Dioulasso if you prefer.

Day 7: Return to Ouagadougou

On your last day, head back to Ouagadougou. It’s a long drive, so make sure to leave early if you’re flying out the same day.

If you have more time before your flight, visit the Moro-Naba Palace. Watch the Moro-Naba ceremony, a traditional ritual held weekly to honor the emperor.

It’s a low-key way to wrap up your trip and gather some final memories before heading home.
