Day 1: Arriving in Yaoundé
Start your journey by arriving in Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital. It’ll likely be your gateway to the country. The city has a laid-back vibe with a mix of modern and traditional elements.
Kick off the day by exploring the Mvog-Betsi Zoo. It’s a small zoo, but you can see plenty of native animals, including primates and reptiles. It gives you an introduction to the country’s wildlife.
Next, head to the National Museum of Cameroon. Located inside an old presidential palace, this museum helps you understand the country’s culture and history. Don’t rush through it. The exhibits aren’t overwhelming, so you’ll have time to soak it all in.
Head over to Mont Fébé in the later afternoon. This is a peaceful spot to admire the view of the city below. On clear days, the panorama is stunning. It’s also a great place to relax and get some fresh air after your museum visit.
For your first dinner in the country, try one of the many local restaurants. Cameroonian food is rich and varied. Don’t miss dishes like ndolé (a spinach-like dish with peanut paste) and grilled fish.
Day 2: Exploring Yaoundé and Heading to Kribi
Spend your morning checking out the Basilique Marie-Reine-des-Apôtres. This church has impressive architecture, and it’s a tranquil spot worth visiting, even if you’re not religious.
Next, take some time to visit the Mokolo Market. It’s busy and colorful, and you’ll find everything, from local produce to clothes and handicrafts. This is a good place to see daily life in Yaoundé. Be prepared to haggle a bit if you’re making purchases.
Grab lunch at another local restaurant and try some more local dishes. Poulet DG (a rich chicken dish) and plantains are always a good choice.
In the afternoon, start your trip south to Kribi. The trip from Yaoundé to Kribi takes 4-5 hours by road, and Kribi is a wonderful coastal town where you can relax by the ocean. The peaceful beaches here are a great way to unwind after a busy start to your trip.
Once you arrive, spend the evening enjoying a seafood dinner right by the beach. Cameroon is known for its fresh fish, and Kribi is one of the best places to experience it. Don’t miss prawns or fish prepared straight from the boat.
Day 3: Relaxing in Kribi
Today is all about taking it easy. You’re in Kribi for the stunning beaches, natural beauty, and a leisurely pace. Start your day by walking along the sandy shores, watching fishermen return from their early morning expeditions. Kribi’s beaches are clean and quiet, perfect for strolling or just lounging if you prefer.
After enjoying the beach for a bit, make sure to visit the nearby Chutes de la Lobé, a waterfall that flows directly into the ocean. It’s a unique sight. You can even take a local canoe for a closer look or walk around to enjoy the scenery.
For those wanting a bit of adventure, take a guided hike through the nearby forest areas. You’re likely to see some wildlife and tropical plants. Otherwise, use the afternoon to read a book, chill in a hammock, or enjoy the calm ambiance of the coast.
In the evening, explore more of Kribi’s food scene. Try the grilled lobster if you haven’t yet. Many seaside establishments grill seafood over open charcoal — simple, yet packed with flavor.
Day 4: Douala
After a slow, peaceful morning in Kribi, make your way to Douala. It’s about a 2-3 hour road trip. Douala is Cameroon’s largest city and economic hub. It’s more industrial than Kribi, but it’s still worth a visit for its unique energy.
Start off by visiting the Ekom-Nkam waterfalls. These iconic falls, not far from Douala, are absolutely stunning and surrounded by lush greenery. The region is rich with natural beauty, and this stop will give you some awe-inspiring views.
Later in the afternoon, explore Douala’s art scene by stopping at the Doual’Art Gallery. It’s a great space showcasing contemporary art from local and regional artists. The exhibitions are regularly changing, so you might stumble on something special during your visit.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at one of Douala’s many bustling restaurants. The city has a variety of options, from traditional to international cuisine, so take time to indulge in whatever you’re craving.
Day 5: Buea and Mount Cameroon
Now it’s time to head to Buea, a beautiful town at the base of Mount Cameroon, the country’s tallest mountain. From Douala, Buea is just 1.5 hours away by car.
For the adventurous traveler, Mount Cameroon offers hiking opportunities. The most popular day hike is the trek to the Hut One Station. This trail is reasonably accessible, even for casual hikers. If you’re not used to hiking this much, go at your own pace because it can be challenging due to high altitude.
However, if you’re not up for hiking, you can simply explore Buea’s colonial architecture. The city has remnants of its German colonial past, including government buildings and churches.
After your day’s adventure, enjoy a local dinner in Buea. Popular choices include soups made from garden eggs or eru (a mixture of vegetables and spices typical of the region).
Wrapping Up
After five days in Cameroon, you’ll have experienced both its cities and its natural beauty. This itinerary gives you enough flexibility to explore at your own pace, while being diverse enough to cover different aspects of the country.
Cameroon is filled with welcoming people, great food, and beautiful sights. Remember to take your time, enjoy the local culture, and embrace the rhythm of each place you visit.
Happy travels!
