14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Djibouti

Day 1: Arrival in Djibouti City

Your adventure begins in Djibouti City, the capital and largest city in Djibouti. After landing, check into your hotel and take some time to get your bearings. Wander around the downtown area, where you’ll find a mix of traditional markets, French colonial buildings, and bustling squares.

In the evening, try some local food such as “skoudehkaris” (a meat and rice dish). If you need to unwind from your flight, head to one of the waterfront cafes for a refreshing drink while watching the sunset over the Gulf of Tadjoura.

Day 2: Exploring Djibouti City

Spend today immersing yourself in the culture of Djibouti City. Start with a visit to the Central Market, a favorite spot for locals to buy fresh produce, spices, and textiles. You’ll love the lively atmosphere here.

Next, head over to Place Menelik, a charming square surrounded by historic buildings. Check out the nearby Hamoudi Mosque, one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Make sure to grab a quick local snack like “samosas” or “foul” (fava bean stew) from a street vendor.

Take the afternoon to visit the People’s Palace and learn more about Djibouti’s history and independence from France. In the evening, enjoy some seafood at a restaurant overlooking the water.

Day 3: Lake Assal

Today is all about Lake Assal, a surreal salt lake located around 2 hours from Djibouti City. This is the third lowest point on Earth and one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world.

Swim—or, more accurately, float—in the lake thanks to the high salt content. The surrounding landscape is stark and beautiful, with black volcanic rock contrasting with the bright turquoise water. Be sure to bring sunglasses because the sun reflects powerfully off the salt flats.

Wrap up the day by snapping some photos of the dramatic scenery before heading back to Djibouti City for a relaxing evening.

Day 4: Day Trip to Arta Beach

Head to Arta Beach, a popular spot for diving and snorkeling on the Gulf of Tadjoura. If you’re into marine life, this beach offers some of the best opportunities to swim with whale sharks (from November to February).

If you prefer to stay on shore, relax on the beach and watch the fishing boats come and go. You can also try some fresh seafood at one of the nearby cafes or from local fishermen.

Head back to the city to rest for the following day’s adventure.

Day 5: Gulf of Tadjoura Boat Trip

It’s time to get out on the water. Book a boat trip across the Gulf of Tadjoura. This area is famous for its clear waters and abundant marine life.

During the trip, you’ll have the chance to snorkel in some pristine spots. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Back on shore, enjoy one last evening in Djibouti City and prepare for heading out of town tomorrow.

Day 6: Travel to Tadjoura Town

Take a scenic journey up the coast to Tadjoura, one of the oldest towns in Djibouti. This quiet seaside village is perfect if you’re looking to slow down after a busy few days.

Walk around town, visit the old mosques, and meet some of the locals. You’ll notice that life here has a slower, more relaxed pace. Find a small cafe by the water for a leisurely lunch, then check out the surrounding beaches or go for a stroll along the coast.

Day 7: Explore Day Forest National Park

Take a day trip from Tadjoura to Day Forest National Park. This is one of the few forested areas in Djibouti and a great spot for hiking.

The park offers beautiful views of the mountains and coast, and there’s a good chance you’ll spot local wildlife like antelopes, gazelles, and various bird species. Pack some snacks, and spend the day exploring the trails at your own pace, feeling far away from the hustle of city life.

Day 8: Relaxation in Tadjoura

Today is all about relaxing. After a wild week, you deserve some downtime.

Spend the day lounging by the beach, reading a book, or renting a kayak to paddle along the shore. Tadjoura’s beaches are far less crowded than Djibouti City’s, giving the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy solitude.

Enjoy a slow meal at a local eatery; seafood is always the best option in these coastal towns.

Day 9: Visit Lake Abbe

Get ready for one of the most unique landscapes you’ve ever seen: Lake Abbe. Today you’ll head inland to this otherworldly lake, surrounded by dozens of limestone chimneys that steam due to geothermal activity.

This is a longer trip from Tadjoura (about 6 hours), so head out early. When you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve landed on a different planet. Take your time walking around the lake, marveling at the bizarre formations, and learning about the area’s geology.

You can either return to Tadjoura or opt to stay overnight in a nearby camp (great for stargazing).

Day 10: Journey to Dikhil

Get on the road early for Dikhil. This small town near the southwest corner of Djibouti serves as the perfect base for visiting both Lake Abbe and surrounding cultural sites.

Spend today mingling with locals, exploring the small but charming town, and enjoying some traditional camel meat or goat dishes for lunch or dinner.

Day 11: Discover Ali Sabieh and Grand Bara Desert

From Dikhil, head toward Ali Sabieh, the second-largest city in Djibouti. After a brief stop in town, continue to the Grand Bara Desert, a vast expanse of flat, white desert sand.

The area is perfect for off-the-beaten-path adventuring. If you’re feeling up to it, try some sand surfing or get involved in some local races that sometimes happen here!

Return to Ali Sabieh for dinner, then head back towards Dikhil for the night.

Day 12: Return to Djibouti City

Make your way back to Djibouti City today with plenty of time to stop along the way for photos. Once back in the city, visit any spots you may have missed on your first days—whether a museum or market—or simply enjoy walking along the Corniche.

Grab dinner at one of the city’s top-rated restaurants, enjoying the mix of French and local influences.

Day 13: Day Trip to Moucha Island

On your second-to-last day, take a boat over to Moucha Island. This quiet, undeveloped island near Djibouti City is perfect for relaxing.

Spend the day swimming, lounging on the beach, or snorkeling in the reef surrounding the island. You can even camp here if you’d like or spend the evening barbecuing on the shore. Otherwise, head back to Djibouti City in the late afternoon.

Day 14: Departure

Enjoy a final breakfast in Djibouti City before heading to the airport for your flight. If you have time, you can stop for last-minute souvenirs or one more cup of coffee by the water.

Reflect on the incredible diversity of landscapes and experiences you’ve enjoyed during your two weeks in Djibouti. It’s a small country with a lot to offer, and you’ll be leaving with memories of salt lakes, deserts, beaches, and vibrant local culture.
