Day 1: Arrival in Kinshasa
Start your trip in Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo. It’s a lively and energetic city filled with music, art, and culture. Once you arrive, take it easy and settle in. You’ll find lots of hotels catering to different budgets.
If you feel up for it, head down to the Congo River. It’s one of the longest rivers in the world, and there are local restaurants along its banks where you can grab a meal while watching boats pass by.
To end the day, visit the lively Matonge district for some live Congolese music and dancing. The nightlife here is something you’ll remember for a long time.
Day 2: Exploring Kinshasa’s Culture
Spend today diving into Kinshasa’s rich culture. Start with the National Museum of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s a small but fascinating museum with artifacts, sculptures, and exhibitions that showcase the country’s history and culture.
Next, visit the Académie des Beaux-Arts. It’s a major art school in the city where you can meet local artists and see their works. You’ll find handmade sculptures, paintings, and unique pieces that reflect life in the Congo.
In the afternoon, take a trip to Lola ya Bonobo. It’s a sanctuary for orphaned bonobos and is one of the few places in the world you can see this endangered species up close. The sanctuary is about an hour’s drive from the city but totally worth the effort.
Day 3: Transfer to Kisantu
Today, head out to Kisantu, a small town about 2 hours from Kinshasa. The journey will give you a real sense of life in rural DR Congo. Once you arrive, visit the Kisantu Botanical Garden. It’s a peaceful place with over 1000 species of plants, including medicinal ones. There’s also a small zoo, but it’s better to focus on the plants and trees.
In the evening, spend another relaxed night in Kisantu. There are simple yet comfortable guesthouses in town that offer a nice break from the bustling capital.
Day 4: Matadi and the Congo River
Take a road trip to Matadi in the southwest, along the Congo River. It’s a 3-hour trip from Kisantu. The landscapes along the way are breathtaking, with hills, valleys, and villages dotting the view.
Once you reach Matadi, take a boat ride on the Congo River. You can see firsthand how important this river is to everyday life in the region. From fishing boats to cargo barges, there’s always something happening on the river.
In the evening, stroll through Matadi’s streets and chat with locals. People are welcoming, and you may even hear some stories about the city’s colonial past.
Day 5: Virunga National Park
Head out to Virunga National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse national parks. You’ll have to catch a flight to Goma and then drive out to the park. This may sound like a hassle, but trust me, it’s totally worth it.
The park is home to mountain gorillas, and you can’t miss the chance to go gorilla trekking. The experience of standing just a few feet away from these powerful animals is something you’ll always remember. Make sure to arrange your permits in advance, as they can run out quickly.
Day 6: Mount Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
If you feel adventurous, spend the day trekking up to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano near Goma. It’s a tough hike, but the reward is incredible: the chance to look down into the world’s largest lava lake. The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours. You’ll be camping overnight at the crater, so prepare for colder temperatures at the top.
Though the trek is challenging, the views and the experience of camping next to a glowing lava lake make it one of the highlights of any Congo trip.
Day 7: Return to Goma and Departure
This morning, head back down from Mount Nyiragongo and return to Goma. Take some time to rest after the hike. If your flight doesn’t leave until the afternoon, you can explore Goma a little. The city is a key hub in eastern Congo and has a unique energy due to its proximity to the park and the nearby lake.
Before leaving, visit Lake Kivu. It’s one of Africa’s Great Lakes and offers stunning views. Grab some local food at a lakeside restaurant and enjoy one last taste of Congo before boarding your flight back home.
