Grab a coffee at a café like Bar Tre Stelle and take in the relaxed atmosphere. Asmara is famous for its laid-back vibe and sidewalk coffee culture.
In the afternoon, visit the Fiat Tagliero building. This futuristic gas station from the 1930s is an architectural gem. Get some rest afterward; tomorrow will be a full day.
Day 2: Explore Asmara
Kick off the morning with a visit to the Asmara Cathedral. The bell tower offers great views of the city.
Next, make your way to the National Museum of Eritrea. It’s small, but the exhibitions will give you a sense of Eritrea’s rich history and cultural diversity.
After lunch, take a short drive to the Tank Graveyard, where you’ll see remnants from Eritrea’s long struggle for independence. It’s a surreal yet educational stop.
If you still have energy, visit Cinema Impero for a quick photo-op before sunset. It’s one of the best-preserved art deco cinemas in the world.
Day 3: Drive to Keren
Head north to Keren, the second-largest city in Eritrea. The drive will take about two hours, so enjoy the scenery along the way.
Once there, start with a visit to the Keren War Cemetery. This respectful memorial honors soldiers who died during World War II.
In the afternoon, explore the colorful Keren Market. It’s a bustling hub where you can interact with locals, buy handicrafts, and even try fresh camel milk. Spend your evening here, soaking in the town’s authentic atmosphere.
Day 4: Explore Keren’s Surroundings
Today, take a short trip to the Mariam Dearit shrine just outside Keren. This cave church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is set under a massive baobab tree.
For lunch, try a local dish like ‘shiro’ (chickpea stew) at a small eatery for a truly immersive experience.
Afterward, check out the former Italian colonial fort on the hill. It’s a peaceful spot with sweeping views of the city and mountains.
Day 5: Off to Massawa
Start early for the scenic drive to the coastal city of Massawa. The trip takes around 3 hours, offering views of mountainous landscapes and the Red Sea.
When you arrive, check into a simple seaside guesthouse and enjoy the remainder of your day by the water. Massawa’s blend of Turkish, Egyptian, and Italian architecture is unlike any other city in Africa.
Day 6: Explore Massawa
Spend your morning exploring the Old Town, which suffered damage during the Ethiopian–Eritrean War. Despite this, the charm is still palpable. Wander through the narrow streets and admire the coral stone buildings.
Don’t miss the Imperial Palace and Sheikh Hanafi Mosque, significant historical landmarks.
In the afternoon, take a walk along the seafront before enjoying a seafood dinner at one of the local restaurants.
End the day with a sunset view over the Red Sea. Massawa is slow-paced, so take it easy and enjoy the serene surroundings.
Day 7: Green Island
Today is all about relaxation. Head to Green Island, just a short boat ride from Massawa. This tiny uninhabited island is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or just lounging on the beach.
Pack a lunch and spend the entire day soaking in the sun and calm waters. Bring snorkeling gear if you have it; the underwater coral reefs here are stunning.
Return to Massawa in the evening for another leisurely night by the sea.
Day 8: Journey to Adulis
Take a day trip to Adulis, one of Eritrea’s most significant archaeological sites. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Massawa, and it dates back over 2,000 years.
Adulis was once a major trading port for the Aksumite Empire. While most of the site is in ruins, it’s fascinating for history buffs. You’ll get a sense of ancient Eritrean trade and maritime history.
Head back to Massawa in the late afternoon and take it easy for the rest of the day.
Day 9: Return to Asmara
Make your way back to Asmara after breakfast. The return drive takes around 3 hours, but the changing landscape keeps the journey interesting.
Once back in Asmara, spend the afternoon at leisure. Visit any sights you may have missed, or simply relax with coffee at a local café.
Consider buying souvenirs from the local markets before leaving, such as baskets or handwoven textiles.
Day 10: Departure
It’s your final day in Eritrea. Depending on your flight time, it’s a good opportunity to visit Biet Ghiorghis Zoo or simply enjoy a final stroll in the city.
Don’t forget to savor one last cup of Eritrean coffee before heading to the airport. Asmara is all about taking in the moment, and that’s the perfect way to bid farewell to this incredible country.
