Day 1: Arrival in Maseru
Welcome to Lesotho! You’ll likely fly into Moshoeshoe I International Airport, located just outside Maseru, the capital. After checking into your accommodation, spend the afternoon getting acquainted with the city. Maseru is laid-back yet vibrant, offering a perfect introduction to the country.
Enjoy a walk around Kingsway, where you’ll find a mix of churches, local shops, and small eateries. Try Papa, a maize-based porridge, or sample Lekhotloane, a filling stew made with goat or lamb.
For dinner, grab a meal at Lancer’s Inn or No.7 Restaurant—both offer a great blend of international and local cuisine. Rest well because the adventure begins!
Day 2: Explore Maseru and Surrounds
Start your day with a visit to Thaba Bosiu, a sandstone plateau about 25 minutes from Maseru. This historical site is where King Moshoeshoe I founded the Basotho nation. The climb up is not too strenuous, and the view from the top is worth it.
Head back to Maseru for lunch. Try one of the street stalls for fresh food and mingling with locals. Next, head to the National Museum for a brief but informative visit showcasing the rich history of Lesotho.
Wind down with a stroll along the Caledon River. It’s perfect for a quiet evening before heading into more rural areas tomorrow.
Day 3: Drive to Morija
Rent a car or arrange for a driver and make the hour-long trip to Morija. This small town is home to the oldest mission in Lesotho, established in 1833 by the French. Morija has a calm vibe but offers a ton of history and natural beauty.
Start by visiting the Morija Museum & Archives. It’s one of Lesotho’s best cultural stops, offering insight into the country’s rich heritage. Hike up the nearby Morija Mountain after the museum visit. It’s a rewarding walk with stunning views of the town and surrounding hills.
In the evening, check into one of Morija’s guesthouses and enjoy a peaceful night in the mountains.
Day 4: Pony Trekking in Malealea
Today, drive about two hours southwest to Malealea. This charming village is famous for pony trekking, a quintessential Lesotho experience.
Spend the afternoon horse riding through Lesotho’s stunning landscapes. Pony trekking here takes you through remote villages, beautiful valleys, and hilltops with panoramic views. The local guides are experienced and will help you connect with the slower rural life that defines Lesotho.
End your day at Malealea Lodge, a rustic but comfortable lodging ideal for unwinding after a long trek.
Day 5: Explore the Malealea Cultural Village
Spend your morning learning more about Lesotho’s culture by visiting the Malealea Cultural Village. You’ll get to see how traditional Basotho huts are crafted and even witness local craft-making, which includes woven hats and blankets. You can buy souvenirs directly from the artists here.
Afterward, go for a short hike to the nearby Botsoela Waterfall. The hike isn’t too tough and takes about two hours round trip. You’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the cascading falls hidden within the mountains.
Return to Malealea Lodge for another relaxed evening.
Day 6: Semonkong – Home of the Maletsunyane Falls
Depart Malealea in the morning and head toward Semonkong, about a three-hour drive. Semonkong is famous for Maletsunyane Falls, one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa at 192 meters.
Check into Semonkong Lodge, which has a cozy atmosphere and a toasty fireplace if you’re visiting during the winter months. After lunch, take a guided hike to the waterfall. The sight of the water plummeting down the moss-covered gorge will leave you speechless!
Optionally, thrill-seekers can also abseil down the falls—an experience that’s recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. Just make sure to book in advance!
Day 7: Semonkong Leisure Day
Take it easy today. Semonkong is a peaceful place, perfect for slow travel. Start your day with a short village tour, where local guides will show you the customs, traditions, and daily life of the Basotho people.
In the afternoon, simply relax and take in the scenery. There are plenty of short walking paths around the area that allow you to absorb Lesotho’s tranquil nature.
For dinner, enjoy home-cooked Basotho meals back at Semonkong Lodge. It’s a great chance to chat with fellow travelers or locals around the fire.
Day 8: Drive to Katse Dam
Get back on the road and head toward Katse Dam, a four-hour drive from Semonkong. The drive winds through the Maloti Mountains, so be ready to stop and take pictures—it’s truly spectacular.
Arriving at Katse, which is home to one of the largest dams in Africa, you’ll get a mix of engineering marvel and natural beauty. Take a guided tour of the dam to learn how it supports both Lesotho and South Africa.
Spend the night in one of the lodges near the dam, where you’ll sleep surrounded by crisp mountain air.
Day 9: Spend Time Around Katse
The area around Katse is perfect for light hiking and exploring. Head out on foot to see the dam from different viewpoints, or take a boat tour of the reservoir. The water here is incredibly clear, and the mountain scenery surrounding it gives you a sense of isolation.
Alternatively, spend half the day visiting a local Basotho village to see traditional homes made of mud and stone. The warmth and hospitality of the locals make this visit extra special.
End the day with another hearty meal in your lodge and relax with a drink under the stars.
Day 10: Return to Maseru and Fly Home
It’s time to head back to Maseru. The drive is about three hours, but leave early if you have a flight to catch. If you have the extra time, stop at a lookout point along the way for one more glimpse at Lesotho’s breathtaking landscapes.
Back in Maseru, have lunch at a local café for one last taste of Basotho flavors before you make your way to the airport.
