Weather in Mali: What to Expect Year-Round

Mali experiences a tropical and subtropical desert climate. It’s mostly hot and dry, but the temperatures and rainfall change throughout the year depending on where you are in the country.

In the northern Sahara region, it’s almost always hot and dry with very little rain. In the south and central parts of the country, the weather is more varied, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The Niger River plays a big role in these regions, especially during the rainy season.

Let’s break it down month by month so you know what to expect and when to visit based on your interests.

Mali’s Weather in January

January is part of Mali’s dry season, especially in the central and southern regions. It’s cooler compared to other months, with daytime temperatures around 25-30°C (77-86°F) and cooler nights, going down below 20°C (68°F) in some places. The northern desert is a bit warmer during the day but can get chilly at night.

If you’re planning outdoor activities like visiting Djenne or hiking in Dogon Country, this is one of the best months to go. There’s almost no rain, making roads easier to navigate.

Mali’s Weather in February

February stays in the dry season, and temperatures start to rise slightly. Expect days in the southern and central parts to be around 30-35°C (86-95°F). Nights remain mild but not as cool as in January.

This is still a good time for trekking and sightseeing as long as you can handle hotter afternoons. Hat and sunscreen are essential, and it’s a good month for visiting Mali’s major landmarks. The risk of rain remains very low.

Mali’s Weather in March

March sees temperatures climbing higher, especially in central and northern Mali. It’s common to see daytime temperatures of 35-40°C (95-104°F) in cities like Timbuktu and Niono. Nights stay mild but can be warmer in the south.

It’s still dry, though, and good for those who enjoy warmer temperatures. Pack light clothing, sunscreen, and stay hydrated as the heat intensifies. The weather may limit how much you enjoy outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the afternoon.

Mali’s Weather in April

April is one of the hottest months in Mali, especially in the northern desert areas. Expect daytime highs of 40°C (104°F) or more. In the central and southern regions, it’s hot too but some areas might get occasional storms towards the end of the month, signaling the transition to the rainy season.

While it’s still possible to travel around, April’s heat can be overwhelming for some. Avoid being outside during midday; late afternoons and early mornings are more tolerable.

Mali’s Weather in May

May continues to be hot, and thunderstorms become more common in the southern regions as the rainy season approaches. Temperatures hover around 35-40°C (95-104°F), but drops in heat during storms offer brief relief.

In the north, it’s still mostly dry, but with scorching heat. If you’re bringing electronics, make sure they’re dust-protected since sandstorms are more frequent this time of year.

Mali’s Weather in June

June marks the start of the rainy season in southern Mali, though rain is not constant. The central and northern parts remain mostly dry, but you can expect some isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures are still high, hovering around 30-35°C (86-95°F) in the south and 40°C (104°F) in the desert.

If you’re in the south near Bamako or Sikasso, weather can be hot, humid, and wet. Roads may start to get muddy, so always have some waterproof clothing if you’re out in nature.

Mali’s Weather in July

July is when the rains pick up in the southern and central regions. The northern desert remains mostly dry, but the southern regions experience downpours, especially near the cities of Bamako and Timbuktu. Temperatures drop slightly but remain warm at around 30-35°C (86-95°F).

Expect muddy roads and possible travel disruptions if you’re planning to move around. Pack waterproof shoes and rain gear if you’re heading to the southern or central parts.

Mali’s Weather in August

August is the peak of the rainy season in southern and central Mali. Heavy rains flood parts of the country. Temperatures are a bit lower compared to earlier months, with daytime highs around 30°C (86°F). The northern desert remains dry and hot.

Traveling in the south gets tricky as some roads may become impassable due to floods. If planning to visit, the northern regions are a better option. Pack a rain jacket and expect delays if heading south.

Mali’s Weather in September

September is the tail-end of the rainy season. Rains are less frequent but can still cause travel disruptions in the southern and central regions. Temperatures are higher again, hovering around 30-35°C (86-95°F), but with the added humidity from recent rains.

As roads start to dry out later in the month, it becomes easier to travel, but always check local conditions before heading out. Waterproof gear is still handy.

Mali’s Weather in October

October signals the end of the rainy season across almost all of Mali. Central and southern regions dry up, while temperatures climb back up to 35-40°C (95-104°F) in the daytime. It’s still humid, but things begin to clear up as rainstorms become rarer.

This is a good time to visit national parks and historical sites as the landscapes are green and lush. Expect warm days and pack light, breathable clothing.

Mali’s Weather in November

November marks the start of the dry and cooler season, especially in the southern and central regions. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, around 30°C (86°F), and nights are cool and comfortable.

It’s one of the best months to explore Mali. Whether you’re trekking, visiting markets, or heading to the Niger River, the weather is generally cooperative. Pack layers for cooler nights and early mornings.

Mali’s Weather in December

December brings even cooler and drier conditions throughout Mali. Daytime temperatures in the saharan north can still reach 30-35°C (86-95°F), but nights are much cooler, especially in the desert where it can drop to 10°C (50°F).

In central and southern Mali, it’s pleasant with mild daytime temperatures between 25-30°C (77-86°F) and cool evenings. It’s a popular time to explore as conditions are perfect for outdoor adventures. A jacket is handy at night.

What to Pack Based on the Season

Dry Season (November to April): Lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes. Nights can still be cool in desert areas, so bring a light jacket, especially for December and January.

Rainy Season (May to October): Waterproof shoes, a good rain jacket, and a travel umbrella are essential. Clothes that dry quickly will make your life easier, and always carry extra layers in case of sudden temperature changes.

No matter when you visit, always pack plenty of water if you’re heading into the desert regions. It’s hot, dry, and dehydration hits fast!
