14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Rwanda

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Most travelers fly into Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and inviting capital. It’s a small, laid-back city that’s easy to navigate. After you arrive, take the day to rest and adjust from your flight. Check into your hotel, get your bearings, and maybe take a walk to see a bit of the city.

If you want to explore more, visit local markets like Kimironko, where you can see some of the city’s daily action. It’s a fun introduction to the culture. Grab a coffee at Question Coffee to taste some of Rwanda’s famous coffee, and don’t forget to try chapati or roasted meat from a nearby street vendor.

Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial & Nyamirambo

Today, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about the country’s tragic history. It’s a heart-wrenching experience but an important one as it pays homage to the millions of lives lost in 1994. You’ll get a deeper understanding of Rwandan resilience and spirit.

In the afternoon, explore the Nyamirambo neighborhood. It’s colorful, lively, and a fantastic place to take a guided walking tour with the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. You’ll visit local homes, learn traditional beekeeping, and even prepare a local meal.

Day 3: Drive to Akagera National Park

Rent a car or book a tour and head east to Akagera National Park. It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali. Akagera is known for its big game safaris, and you’ll get to see elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and even lions and rhinos. Take in the views of the vast savanna, rivers, lakes, and grassy plains.

Spend the rest of the day relaxing at your lodge. Many lodges offer sunset boat trips on Lake Ihema, where you can see hippos, crocodiles, and plenty of birdlife.

Day 4: Safari in Akagera National Park

Wake up early for a full-day game drive. If you’re lucky, you might see lions and leopards stalking their prey. Akagera is also known for more than 500 species of birds, which makes it perfect for birdwatching enthusiasts.

After your safari, take some time to unwind. Enjoy the lodge’s views as you sip a cool drink and listen to the sounds of the wildlife around you.

Day 5: Return to Kigali

Drive back to Kigali today. You can visit other interesting spots in the city such as the Inema Art Center, known for its local contemporary art. If you’re interested in learning more about renewable energy and environmental sustainability, you can stop by Kigali’s many eco-projects.

Use this day to rest or head to one of Kigali’s amazing restaurants like Repub Lounge for delicious Rwandan dishes with a striking view of the city.

Day 6: Travel to Musanze

Today, travel to Musanze, a town near Volcanoes National Park. The 2-hour drive from Kigali offers scenic views of terraced hills and misty mountains. Musanze is a great base for exploring one of Rwanda’s top attractions: the endangered mountain gorillas.

Once in Musanze, visit the nearby Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Swim, hike, or go on a boat trip to see local fishing islands and interact with the local fishermen. Spend the evening relaxing before tomorrow’s big adventure.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

It’s an early start, but the experience is unforgettable. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is one of the top things to do in Rwanda. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll hike through the dense forest with a trained tracker and guide, eventually coming face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas.

Spending an hour with these gentle giants in their natural habitat is life-changing. After the trek, return to Musanze, where you can recover from the activity and reflect on the experience.

Day 8: Visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

Today, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near Volcanoes National Park. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in Rwandan culture. You can learn about traditional dance, crafts, and local ways of living. Participate in drumming sessions, try archery, and taste some homemade banana beer.

In the afternoon, head to the Shyorongi Valley for some downtime. Take a leisurely hike, enjoy the scenic beauty, or simply relax at your lodge.

Day 9: Explore Caves and Waterfalls Around Musanze

Take today to explore the caves and waterfalls around Musanze. The Musanze Caves, volcanic formations spread over 2 kilometers, offer a cool afternoon adventure. You’ll walk through dark lava tunnels and hear ancient stories from your guide.

If you prefer something calmer, spend the day at one of the nearby waterfalls like the beautiful Rusina Waterfall. They’re a peaceful spot for a quiet picnic or some nature photography.

Day 10: Gisenyi and Lake Kivu

Drive to Gisenyi, a lakeside town on the shores of Lake Kivu. It’s about 1.5 hours from Musanze, with stunning views along the way. Lake Kivu is the perfect place to relax after your active days. Walk along sandy beaches or just sit by the lake and enjoy the tranquility.

This evening, enjoy a fresh grilled fish and local beer at one of the lakeside restaurants. Lake Kivu sunsets are some of the best in the country, so make sure you’re by the water during the golden hour.

Day 11: Relax and Kayak on Lake Kivu

Take it slow today—by now you’ve been traveling for a while, so some relaxation is nice. Spend the morning kayaking on Lake Kivu. It’s peaceful and offers a great way to explore the coves and little islands.

If you’re up for some more adventure, consider renting a bicycle to ride along the Congo Nile Trail. It’s a scenic ride through coffee plantations and local villages.

Day 12: Nyungwe Forest National Park

Leave Gisenyi early and head into Nyungwe Forest National Park. It’s a long drive (about 5 hours), but Nyungwe is worth the trip. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful tea plantations and dense green hills.

Nyungwe is one of the last remaining rainforests in Africa. After arriving, take a quiet afternoon to relax at your lodge or take a short walk through the surrounding nature trails.

Day 13: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe

Today, you’re going to experience chimpanzee trekking. Similar to gorilla trekking, you’ll have a trained guide to help track and spot these playful primates. It’s thrilling to watch them swing from trees or forage for food.

Afterward, go on the famous Canopy Walk. Suspended 60 meters above the forest, this thrilling experience gives you sweeping views of the lush surroundings. You’ll feel like you’re walking in the clouds.

Day 14: Return to Kigali and Departure

On your final day, make the drive back to Kigali. If you have more time before your flight, you can stop at the National Museum of Rwanda in Huye (Butare) or do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs in Kigali’s markets.

Say goodbye to this beautiful country, filled with memories of stunning nature, friendly people, and life-changing experiences.
