The Perfect 5-Day Itinerary for Exploring Rwanda

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

You’ll likely arrive in Kigali today, Rwanda’s capital. Kigali is one of the cleanest and safest cities in Africa. It’s small enough to explore the main spots in a day but vibrant enough to give you a sense of what the country has to offer.

Spend some time getting settled. Once you’ve checked in and unpacked, consider heading to Kigali Genocide Memorial. It’s an important stop to understand Rwanda’s tragic history. The memorial is moving but essential to visit for anyone wanting to learn about the 1994 genocide.

After the memorial, head to Kimironko Market. This lively market is a great place to get in touch with the local life. You’ll find fresh produce, clothing, and Rwandan crafts. It’s an authentic experience and a great spot for grabbing some snacks or souvenirs.

In the evening, visit a local restaurant. I recommend trying a traditional Rwandan dish, such as “brochettes” (skewers) or “ugali” (a cornmeal side dish). Republika Lounge or Heaven Restaurant are great options to enjoy these flavors.

Day 2: Nyungwe Forest National Park

Wake up early and hit the road for Nyungwe Forest National Park. It’s about a 4- to 5-hour drive from Kigali. Don’t worry: the scenic landscape along the way makes it an engaging journey. Rwanda’s rolling green hills will keep you glued to the window.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. It’s famous for its biodiversity, especially the chimpanzee population. Depending on your energy level once you arrive, join a chimpanzee trek and see these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Rwandan park guides are fantastic, and they’ll lead you through the forest, watching out for chimpanzees darting through the trees.

If you feel more like stretching your legs without committing to a morning of trekking, try the canopy walk. Elevated suspension bridges in the treetops allow for stunning views of the forest. The walk is about 1.5 hours and is a great way to stay active without overexerting yourself.

After a day of nature, stay the night near the park. There are a few lodges in the area. Options like Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel offer comfortable accommodation and panoramic views of the surrounding hills.

Day 3: Kibuye & Lake Kivu

Today, head toward Kibuye, a town on the shores of Lake Kivu. The drive takes around 3 hours. The town offers a nice change of pace after the dense rainforest of Nyungwe.

Once in Kibuye, grab lunch by the lake. There are a few lakeside restaurants that serve grilled fish and local dishes. The relaxed vibe here is perfect for unwinding and enjoying the natural beauty around you.

After lunch, consider hopping on a boat tour of Lake Kivu. You can visit nearby islands like Napoleon Island, which is home to a colony of fruit bats. The boat ride offers a peaceful way to enjoy the lake and its surroundings.

In the late afternoon, take some time to swim or relax by the shore. Lake Kivu’s water is clean and safe for swimming, and the low-key beach areas are great places to simply chill.

Stay overnight in Kibuye. Many hotels offer lake views, giving you picture-perfect sunsets to close out your day.

Day 4: Visit Volcanoes National Park

It’s time to experience Rwanda’s most iconic attraction: Volcanoes National Park. Leave Kibuye early and drive north to reach Musanze. The drive is about 3 hours. Once in Musanze, spend the day exploring the Volcanoes National Park region.

Of course, the park is best known for its gorilla trekking. If you’ve booked a gorilla trek, be prepared: it’s an early start and the hike can be challenging. You’ll head deep into the forest to spend time with Rwanda’s famous mountain gorillas. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a chance to see these gentle creatures up close. Make sure to follow the park rules and the guidance of your trekking team to keep both you and the gorillas safe.

If gorilla trekking isn’t on your plans, or if you prefer a lighter day, take a golden monkey trek instead. These primates are playful and fun to spot, and the hike is generally easier than the gorilla trek.

In the evening, return to Musanze town. There are several guesthouses and small hotels to stay overnight.

Day 5: Kigali & Departure

On your last day, head back to Kigali. The drive from Musanze takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, which gives you plenty of time for some final Kigali adventures.

This might be a good day to explore any Kigali spots you missed on Day 1. You can visit Inema Art Center, which showcases modern Rwandan art. Also, check out the city’s cafes or craft shops. Nyamirambo Women’s Center offers guided tours around a traditional Rwandan neighborhood and is worth a visit if you’re interested in some light afternoon walking and local interaction.

If you have time before your flight, cap off your trip with one last Rwandan meal. Try the local comfort food of “ibihaza” (pumpkin prepared with beans) or “isombe” (cassava leaves). Mahogany Kigali or The Hut Restaurant are good choices for your last meal in the country.

Then, it’s time to head to the airport for your departure. Rwanda is a small country, but it packs a lot into five days. You’ll leave with memories of wildlife, history, and really good food.
