Day 1: Arrival in Dakar
Welcome to your 10-day adventure in Senegal! Start in Dakar, the country’s vibrant capital. It’s a mix of tradition and modernity, with unique sounds and sights. Spend your first day adjusting to the pace and exploring the local surroundings.
Visit the African Renaissance Monument for sweeping views of the city. It’s a great way to understand Dakar and its cultural significance.
For the evening, head to Soumbedioune Market. Check out local crafts, sample fresh seafood, and watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch. You’ll start feeling the energy of Senegal right away.
Day 2: Goree Island
Take a half-day trip to Goree Island, just a short ferry ride from Dakar. This UNESCO World Heritage site holds emotional history tied to the transatlantic slave trade. It’s a must-see. Visit the House of Slaves and walk along the quiet, pastel-colored streets.
After diving deeper into the past, return to Dakar. Grab lunch at one of the local “dibiteries” for some grilled meat or fish. In the afternoon, stroll around the city. Hit the Museum of Black Civilizations or the seaside Corniche for a slower pace.
Day 3: Dakar and Ngor Island
Start your day by exploring more of Dakar’s neighborhoods like Medina. Take time to wander through the local markets, including Marché Kermel or Sandaga Market. This is a great spot to soak in daily life without rushing.
In the afternoon, take a quick pirogue boat to Ngor Island. This tiny island is perfect for a relaxed beach day. The water is clear, there are small art studios, and the vibe is chill. No cars; just tranquility.
Spend the evening back in Dakar, trying some delicious Senegalese dishes like yassa or thieboudienne (Senegal’s national dish made with fish and rice).
Day 4: Pink Lake (Lac Retba)
Today, head to Pink Lake, commonly called Lac Retba, about an hour outside of Dakar. The pink-ish hue of the lake is surreal and makes for fantastic photos. You can also see how locals harvest salt here, which is fascinating to watch in action.
You can ride quads or four-wheel drive vehicles across the sand dunes that border the lake, adding an adventurous spin to the visit. End the day by having lunch near the lake and then head back to Dakar for a relaxed evening.
Day 5: Saint-Louis
It’s time to leave Dakar and head to Saint-Louis, about a 4-5 hour journey north. Saint-Louis is a beautiful, historic city, known for its French colonial architecture and colorful streets.
Once in Saint-Louis, explore the Faidherbe Bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, the man known for creating the Eiffel Tower. Stroll through the town, and feel the fusion of French and African influences. Relax by the river and catch a glimpse of the local fishing life.
For dinner, enjoy a nice meal at one of the riverfront restaurants. It’s the perfect place to kick back and take in the vibe of this charming town.
Day 6: National Park & Langue de Barbarie
Wake up early and head to Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, a UNESCO site just 60 km from Saint-Louis. It’s a birdwatcher’s dream, with thousands of migrating birds every year. Even if birdwatching isn’t your thing, the natural beauty will leave you speechless.
In the afternoon, go to Langue de Barbarie, a thin strip of sand separating the river from the ocean. This is the place to experience untouched beaches and a peaceful canoe ride along the riverbanks. Return to Saint-Louis in the evening for another relaxing night.
Day 7: Touba
After a peaceful time in Saint-Louis, make your way to Touba, Senegal’s spiritual center. Touba is home to the impressive Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Africa.
The mosque itself is intricate and full of detail, and it’s an important pilgrimage site for followers of the Mouride brotherhood. Walk through the peaceful streets of this holy city and experience a completely different atmosphere compared to Dakar or Saint-Louis.
Spend the night in Touba. There are local eateries where you can enjoy some traditional Senegalese food in a more serene environment.
Day 8: Sine-Saloum Delta
Start early and head to the Sine-Saloum Delta, one of Senegal’s most beautiful and off-the-beaten-path destinations. The journey to the delta will take about 4-5 hours, but the reward is worth it.
The delta is a paradise of mangroves, small islands, and wildlife. You can go kayaking, fishing, or take a boat tour through the labyrinth of waterways. You’ll be surrounded by biodiversity whether you’re on land or water.
Settle down for the night in a local guesthouse. Many lodges around here offer eco-friendly accommodation options, which is perfect for helping you feel connected to nature.
Day 9: Village Visit & Cultural Immersion
Today is all about diving into Senegalese culture by visiting one of the local villages around the Sine-Saloum Delta. Spend your day learning about traditional Wolof culture, and engage with locals in their daily routines. Many villages here make their living from fishing, agriculture, or crafts.
Take part in activities like basket weaving, helping with gardening, or just sitting down for a chat. This is part of the trip where you’ll feel connected to the real Senegal beyond the tourist sites.
The rest of the day is all about relaxation, so enjoy the evening watching the sunset over the delta with a cold drink.
Day 10: Relaxation & Departure
It’s your final day in Senegal. Depending on your flight time, either enjoy a laid-back morning in the delta or make your way back to Dakar.
If you have extra time, grab any souvenirs from Dakar’s local artisans or revisit your favorite spots from the first few days. Make sure to savor your last bites of local food because Senegal’s flavorful cuisine is hard to forget!
From Dakar’s lively streets to the natural beauty of the delta, you’ll leave with memories of Senegal’s warmth, culture, and diversity. Safe travels!
