Day 1: Arrival in Freetown
Touch down in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Fly into Lungi International Airport, and from there, you’ll need to take a ferry or water taxi across to Freetown itself. This crucial step gives you your first view of the serene waters and some of the lush scenery already. An exciting way to start the journey.
Once settled into your accommodation, take the rest of the day to relax but feel free to wander around Freetown’s downtown area. Head to Victoria Park for some open space, or stroll along Siaka Stevens Street to feel the energy of the city. Grab a local meal: try jollof rice or cassava leaves with rice from one of the many food spots around the city.
Day 2: Freetown – History Comes to Life
Start your morning by visiting the National Museum. It’s the best place to learn about Sierra Leone’s complex but rich heritage, from the times of the slave trade to independence. The museum is small but provides excellent detail on Sierra Leonean history.
Next, visit the Cotton Tree, a historic symbol in Freetown dating back to the days when slaves first arrived and sought refuge. This 500-year-old tree is a key landmark in the city. Afterward, explore the bustling King Jimmy Market for souvenirs or fresh produce – a perfect way to dive into the local culture.
Day 3: Aberdeen – Beaches & Relaxation
Head to Aberdeen Beach today. This tranquil stretch of sand is great for unwinding, swimming, or enjoying a meal by the water. Plenty of beachfront restaurants serve fresh fish dishes and local Sierra Leonean delicacies. Take your time to soak in the beauty here.
For a more active pursuit, book a boat trip to one of the nearby islands like Banana Island. It’s perfect for snorkeling and offers fewer crowds. If you want a day off to relax, lounging on the beach will be more than enough to recharge after your city exploration.
Day 4: Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Today, visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. It’s only a short drive from Freetown, set deep in the forest. The sanctuary is dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned and rescued chimps. You can take a guided forest walk, watch chimps in a semi-wild environment, and learn more about their conservation efforts.
Bring comfortable shoes and prepare for a nature-filled day as you walk around the sanctuary’s serene surroundings. If you love nature and wildlife, this stop is a must.
Day 5: Freetown to Tiwai Island
Start your journey to Tiwai Island Reserve, a wildlife sanctuary off the Moa River. It’s an incredible spot for nature lovers. The trip involves a mix of road travel and a boat ride, making the journey part of the adventure.
Upon arrival, settle into an eco-lodge on the island. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. You’ll be surrounded by forest and have plenty of opportunities to see wildlife like monkeys and all manner of birds.
Day 6: Tiwai Island – Wildlife Exploration
Spend today exploring the island and its rich biodiversity. Take a guided hike through the rainforest to spot colobus monkeys, pygmy hippos, and rare birds. Tiwai Island is rich in both flora and fauna, and you’ll feel closer to nature than ever.
For a more adventurous option, take a canoe ride along the Moa River to observe the island from a different perspective. At night, listen to the sounds of the wild as you relax in your eco-lodge.
Day 7: Bo – Gateway to the Provinces
After your Tiwai adventure, head to Bo, the second-largest city in Sierra Leone. It’s often an overlooked destination but offers a unique experience, away from the usual tourist trail.

Visit the local markets to see Sierra Leonean commerce in action, or if you prefer, take it easy: Bo isn’t a place that rushes you. It’s a great place to stop, stretch your legs, and relax before you continue your journey across the country.
Day 8: Kenema – Explore the Hinterlands
From Bo, continue your journey east to Kenema. Make sure you get to Kenema on a market day: the town comes alive with traders selling everything from fresh produce to handwoven fabrics. This is a great opportunity to interact with locals.
You can enjoy the peaceful countryside or visit the nearby Gola Rainforest National Park. If you’re looking to unwind, stroll around Kenema and enjoy the slow pace of life.
Day 9: Gola Rainforest National Park
Spend today exploring Gola Rainforest National Park. This is one of the largest remaining rainforests in Sierra Leone and offers opportunities for trekking and birdwatching.

If you’re lucky, you might spot forest elephants or climb one of the forest trails that reward you with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. End the day back in Kenema, where you can relax after your adventure in the forest.
Day 10: Makeni – Explore Local Communities
Travel north towards Makeni, which is the largest town in northern Sierra Leone. Makeni provides an authentic small-town feel that many visitors overlook.
Take a walk through the town’s streets and stop at the lively markets or local cafés. Visit the local schools or organizations to learn more about the community, or go for a bike tour to connect with the less-touristed Sierra Leonean villages.

Day 11: Outamba-Kilimi National Park
Prepare for a journey to Outamba-Kilimi National Park today. This off-the-beaten-path gem is known for its blend of savannah and forest. It’s quieter here than places like Gola Rainforest but equally special.
The park offers river trips, wildlife viewing opportunities, and a chance to see hippos and chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Spend the night in simple local accommodation near the park.
Day 12: Outamba-Kilimi Wildlife Safari
Today, go on a guided wildlife safari. This part of Sierra Leone is much less crowded but full of biodiversity. Embark on a boat safari to see hippos cruising the river or explore the park on a deeper nature walk.
This is probably your best opportunity to see large mammals like elephants in their natural environment. End the day with another riverside dinner at one of the simple lodges in the area.
Day 13: Return to Freetown
It’s time to head back to Freetown. The journey will take several hours, but the scenery through the northern province will keep you entertained.
Once back in Freetown, use the remaining part of your day to relax by the beautiful Lumley Beach. It’s a perfect spot to unwind after the long ride. Grab a last local meal from one of the beachside restaurants as you watch the sunset.
Day 14: Departure
Depending on your flight time, you may have a bit more time to explore Freetown before heading back to Lungi International Airport.
If you want a final cultural stop, visit Sierra Leone’s Peace and Cultural Monument or spend another quiet moment by the coast in Aberdeen or Lumley Beach before it’s time to depart.
Your two weeks in Sierra Leone will leave you with memories of rich culture, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes. It’s a country that may not be as well-known as others, but its treasures are worth your time.
