Day 1: Arrive in Freetown
Your first day in Sierra Leone starts in its bustling capital, Freetown. After arriving at Lungi International Airport, you’ll take a ferry or water taxi across the river to reach Freetown itself. Take it slow today and settle in.
Head to your hotel, drop off your bags, and get your bearings. Take a walk around the city center to soak in the lively vibe of this coastal metropolis. Check out famous landmarks like the Cotton Tree, a huge symbol of Freetown’s history.
Afterward, explore the National Museum next to the Cotton Tree. It offers a great intro to the country’s history and culture, featuring artifacts from ancient tribes to colonial times.
For dinner, try local dishes like jollof rice or cassava leaves at a local restaurant.
Where to Stay:
Look for hotels in Aberdeen area. It’s a safe and traveler-friendly neighborhood with beaches close by.
Day 2: Explore Freetown
Start your morning with a visit to the Sierra Leone National Railway Museum. It’s a hidden gem and gives you a glimpse into the country’s colonial-era railway history.

Next up, spend some time at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located a short drive from Freetown. It’s a great spot to learn about the efforts towards conservation of endangered chimpanzees. You’ll even get to see the chimps up close as they thrive in the semi-wild environment.
After visiting Tacugama, head to Lumley Beach for some relaxation. Grab lunch at one of the restaurants along the beach and spend your afternoon swimming or just hanging out under the shade.
End your day at one of the bars or beachside cafes on Lumley, enjoying a cold drink while watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
Where to Eat:
Try Mamba Point for a mix of local and international dishes or stop by Tessa’s Restaurant for seafood.
Day 3: Day Trip to Bunce Island
Today, take a boat trip to Bunce Island, one of the most historically significant sites in Sierra Leone. It’s an old British slave fort dating back to the 18th century. The boat ride takes a couple of hours, but the trip is very rewarding.
At Bunce Island, you’ll walk among the ruins while learning about its tragic past. The informative guides on the island will walk you through the historical sites and explain how the island played a key role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Return to Freetown in the late afternoon and enjoy a slow evening in the city.

Insider Tip:
Pack some snacks and water as services are limited on Bunce Island.
Day 4: Head to Tokeh Beach
On Day 4, it’s time to slow things down at one of Sierra Leone’s best beaches: Tokeh Beach. It’s located just over an hour drive south of Freetown, so it’s an easy trip.
Tokeh Beach offers miles of white sand and clean waters. You can rent a beach villa or stay at a beach resort here for a proper tropical getaway.
Spend the day swimming, walking along the coast, or fishing with the local fishermen. You could also book a speedboat ride to explore nearby Banana Island.

In the evening, enjoy fresh seafood at your lodge or one of the nearby beach restaurants.
Where to Stay:
The Tokeh Beach Resort is a popular place to stay. It offers beachside cabins and fantastic food.
Day 5: Day Trip to Banana Island
Today, jump on a boat to Banana Island! They’re a group of small islands just off the coast from Tokeh Beach.

You can spend your time diving, snorkeling, or hiking around the island. The dive spots around Banana Island have coral reefs teeming with marine life.
For lunch, you might just want to stop by one of the island’s small guesthouses. Locals often offer cooked meals that taste great after a long day out in the water.
Explore the history of the islands too. There are old colonial buildings and even ancient cannons still sitting on the ground from the days when these islands were part of the slave trade.
Head back to Tokeh Beach when you’re done for the day.
About Boat Transport:
Most hotels in Tokeh can arrange boat transport to Banana Island. Make sure you book this in advance.
Day 6: Explore Tacugama and River No. 2 Beach
On your return trip to Freetown, take time to explore more of the beautiful coastal routes. Stop at River No. 2 Beach, another postcard-perfect beach near Tokeh.
This beach is often quieter and offers clean waters for swimming. Take a walk along the bridge over the river that gives this spot its name. It’s a great spot for some photos.
If you missed the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary earlier or want to see the chimps again, you could stop by on your way back to Freetown.
Wrap up your day with dinner at one of Freetown’s restaurants to celebrate your almost-complete trip. You deserve it!
Other Attractions on the Way:
On the drive, you’ll pass some villages. Feel free to stop along the road and interact with the locals.
Day 7: Explore Freetown’s Markets & Departure
On your final day, take it easy. Spend the morning wandering around Freetown one last time.
Visit the Big Market on Wallace Johnson Street to pick up some souvenirs. It’s a colorful and chaotic market where you can find local arts and crafts, including traditional cloth (gara), carvings, and jewelry.
If you have time, stop by St. George’s Cathedral, a historic church that showcases Sierra Leone’s colonial past.
Afterward, head back to Lungi International Airport for your flight. Be sure to factor in the ferry or water taxi time when planning your trip back to the airport.
Final Thoughts:
Sierra Leone is full of contrast, from its tragic history to its beautiful beaches. You’ve made the most of your trip while still leaving some room to breathe.
This travel experience will stay with you for a long time!
