10-Day Itinerary for South Africa: A Complete Guide

South Africa is a land of diverse landscapes, wildlife, and vibrant culture. From the bustling streets of Cape Town to the wild terrain of Kruger National Park, there’s so much to see. This 10-day itinerary balances famous attractions with hidden gems. You’ll be able to see the best of South Africa without rushing — and still have time to relax. Let’s go!

Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town

Start your adventure in Cape Town. Once you arrive, get settled and take it easy. You’ll likely be jetlagged, so take the day to rest and explore the area near your hotel or guesthouse. In the late afternoon, take a walk along the V&A Waterfront. It’s touristy but still worth seeing especially for that first-day vibe. Less energy? Just grab a snack and people-watch.

Day 2: Explore Cape Town’s Must-Sees

Today, visit Table Mountain — one of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks. Take the cable car up for amazing views and, if you’re up for it, you can hike back down. Afterward, head to Bo-Kaap, one of the city’s most colorful neighborhoods. Wander the streets, visit the museum, and grab a traditional Cape Malay dish like bobotie for lunch.

In the afternoon, check out the District Six Museum to learn about the city’s history during apartheid. End the day with a sunset on Signal Hill or stroll the beautiful Camps Bay beach.

Day 3: Cape Peninsula and the Penguins

Today, rent a car or join a group tour and head to the Cape Peninsula. Drive along the stunning coastal roads to see Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak. Your main stop though? Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, home to adorable penguins. Yes, penguins!

Continue to Cape Point, the southwestern tip of Africa, to enjoy the jagged cliffs and dramatic scenery. As you head back to Cape Town, stop in Kalk Bay for fresh seafood.

Day 4: Cape Winelands

Make today a relaxing one. Take a day trip to the Cape Winelands, specifically Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. These charming towns offer world-class wineries, rolling vineyards, and old Dutch-inspired architecture.

Spend the day tasting wines and enjoying a long lunch at one of the wineries. Don’t worry — if you don’t drink wine, the food and scenery make it worth it.

Day 5: Head to Hermanus for Whale Watching

Drive to Hermanus, about a two-hour trip from Cape Town. This charming coastal town is known for its whale watching, especially during the southern Whale season from June to November. Hop on a boat tour or simply watch whales from the cliffs.

Spend the afternoon walking through the town or relaxing on the beach. In the evening, enjoy Hermanus’s seafood specialties.

Day 6: Garden Route to Knysna

It’s time for the famous Garden Route. Drive from Hermanus toward Knysna, a picturesque town along the South African coast. The drive itself is scenic, so stop at viewpoints along the way.

Once in Knysna, check out the Knysna Heads, dramatic cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. There are also some great hiking trails nearby. If you arrive early enough, consider renting a kayak on the lagoon.

Day 7: Tsitsikamma National Park Hikes

Leave early and make your way to Tsitsikamma National Park. This place is an adventurer’s dream. You can hike through forests, cross the famous Storms River suspension bridge, or just relax by the ocean.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, try zip-lining or go on a kayaking tour down the Storms River. There’s enough going on here to keep everyone happy.

Day 8: Fly to Kruger National Park

Today, you’ll shift from coastal landscapes to wildlife. Fly from George or Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, then connect to a flight to Kruger National Park.

Once you arrive, check into your lodge. Spend the evening relaxing or go on a short sunset safari to get a first glimpse of lions, elephants, and other big game.

Day 9: Full-Day Safari at Kruger

Wake up early for a full-day safari. Most lodges include both sunrise and sunset game drives. Be sure to bring a good camera as this is your chance to witness the Big 5 in action!

In between drives, relax by the pool or enjoy a leisurely lunch. Kruger is one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife, so don’t rush. Take it all in!

Day 10: Final Safari and Departure

It’s your last day! If time allows, go on one last morning game drive before heading back to the airport. Fly from Kruger to Johannesburg for your connecting flight home.

You’ll leave South Africa with wonderful memories and a deeper understanding of its beauty and culture. Safe travels!
