Day 1: Arrive in Arusha
Arusha is the gateway to Northern Tanzania and the first stop for many travelers. Once you arrive, spend the day resting from your flight or explore the city at a relaxed pace.
Take a walk around the local markets, like Maasai Market, where you can buy crafts and souvenirs. Visit the Cultural Heritage Centre if you want to get familiar with local art and history. For your first meal in Tanzania, try some traditional cuisine at a local restaurant. You’ll find plenty of options offering “ugali” (maize porridge) and grilled meat (nyama choma).
Go to sleep early since you’ll start your adventure fresh tomorrow.
Day 2: Arusha National Park
Start the day with a trip to Arusha National Park. It’s a less-visited park compared to others in Tanzania, but that means fewer crowds and a more relaxed experience.
Here, you can go on a walking safari, which is rare in many parks. You’ll see giraffes, zebras, and warthogs up close. If you’re lucky, you might spot the elusive black and white Colobus monkeys. The park also has incredible views of Mount Meru and mini craters worth checking out.
Return to Arusha in the afternoon and enjoy a laid-back evening.
Day 3: Drive to Tarangire National Park
Today, you’ll make your way to Tarangire National Park, which is about a 2-hour drive from Arusha. Tarangire is known for its giant baobab trees and large herds of elephants. Spend the day on a full safari, where you’ll have a good chance of seeing lions, leopards, and even cheetahs.
Depending on your budget, you can stay in one of the lodges or camps outside or inside the park. The camps provide a more immersive experience and sometimes offer night game drives, where you’ll see the animals after dark.
Day 4: Explore Tarangire, then head to Lake Manyara
Start with a morning game drive through Tarangire to see its wildlife in action when they are most active. Spend a few more hours appreciating the park’s landscapes before heading towards Lake Manyara National Park, just under two hours away.
Once you arrive in Lake Manyara’s area, enjoy a scenic drive and settle into a nearby lodge. If you arrive early enough, you can take a short evening game drive. Lake Manyara is especially known for its tree-climbing lions and large populations of flamingos.
Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park and Mto Wa Mbu Village
Spend the morning exploring Lake Manyara National Park. The park is lush and green, which is a nice contrast to the drier landscapes you might have seen in other parks. Besides lions and flamingos, you’ll see giraffes, elephants, and hippos near the lake.
In the afternoon, take a cultural tour of Mto Wa Mbu village, located just outside the park. Here, you’ll meet locals, visit banana plantations, and learn about traditional Tanzanian farming. You can also sample “ugali” and other local foods prepared by the villagers.
Day 6: Full Day Safari in Ngorongoro Crater
Leave early to drive to Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers some of the best game driving in Tanzania.
The crater is rich in wildlife, and seeing the “Big Five” (lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos) is a real possibility here. Eat lunch at a designated picnic spot near a hippo pool while watching the nearby wildlife.
Don’t rush. Take your time to soak in this amazing natural wonder.
Head to Karatu, a nearby town, for a much-needed rest after a long day.
Day 7: Explore Karatu and return to Arusha
Spend your last day at a slower pace. You can explore the small town of Karatu or visit a nearby coffee plantation to learn about one of Tanzania’s major exports.
Once you’ve had your fill of Karatu, start your journey back to Arusha. It’s a 3-hour drive but gives you a chance to reflect on your incredible Tanzanian adventure.
Upon arrival in Arusha, if you have time before your flight, you can do some last-minute shopping or grab dinner at a nice restaurant. Then, it’s time to head to the airport as your week in Tanzania comes to an end.
