Boda bodas are motorcycle taxis, and they’re everywhere in Uganda. They are cheap but risky as accidents are common. Ideally, you should always wear a helmet, but drivers don’t always have one for passengers.
If you decide to use a boda boda, negotiate the fare before starting the trip. Most short rides cost around 1,000-5,000 UGX. They’re fast and convenient for short distances, especially in towns, but be cautious of drivers who ignore traffic rules.
Taxis in Uganda (Special Hires)
Regular car taxis, often called “special hires,” are available in cities, especially Kampala. These are safer than boda bodas because you’re in a car, but they tend to be more expensive.
The cost of a short ride within city limits starts around 10,000 UGX and can go significantly higher depending on distance and time of day. Taxis here don’t have meters, so it’s important to agree on a price before the ride begins.
Ridesharing Services
Uber and Bolt operate in Kampala. These are much safer than boda bodas and offer fair pricing without the need for bargaining. You can easily download the apps and request a ride, and prices tend to be very affordable.
An average Uber ride within Kampala might cost between 10,000-30,000 UGX depending on traffic and distance. Since the fare is tracked by the app, there’s no hassle in dealing with cash unless you prefer paying with cash over card.

How to Rent a Car
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore Uganda on your own schedule. Car rental services are available in Kampala and Entebbe. You can book online or rent directly from local agencies after arrival.
Most cars come with a driver because driving in Uganda can be tricky due to poor road conditions in some areas. However, it is possible to rent without a driver if you’re experienced driving in challenging environments. Daily rental costs begin around $40 USD for a basic sedan; 4×4 vehicles, which are recommended for rural areas, can cost $70-150 USD per day.
Driving Conditions
Driving in Uganda can be stressful due to heavy traffic, especially in Kampala, and many roads outside main cities can be unpaved and full of potholes. If you’re planning trips to national parks or rural areas, a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
Also be aware that road signage isn’t great in some areas, and GPS might not always be reliable. Driving is on the left side of the road, and the speed limits vary. Always drive within these limits to avoid fines or accidents.
