14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Zambia

Day 1: Arrive in Lusaka

You’ve just landed in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. Take some time to settle into your accommodation and relax after the journey. Depending on where you’re staying, head out for a casual meal at a local café or restaurant. Start getting a feel for Zambia’s friendly vibe.

Day 2: Explore Lusaka

Spend your first full day exploring Lusaka. Visit the National Museum to learn about the country’s history. Then head to Kabwata Cultural Village to buy crafts directly from artists. It’s great for souvenirs and supporting the local community.

In the afternoon, check out the Lusaka City Market for local food and a full cultural immersion. Just be prepared for the hustle and bustle!

Day 3: Lusaka to South Luangwa National Park

Today, you’ll fly or take a bus to South Luangwa National Park, one of the best parks for seeing wildlife in Zambia. Settle into your lodge or campsite. Most lodges offer sunset safaris, so you can start your trip with an evening game drive.

Day 4: Safari in South Luangwa National Park

Time for a full day in the wild. Join a guided morning and evening game drive to catch animals in action. South Luangwa is known for its large elephant populations and prides of lions. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!

In between game drives, relax by the pool or in the lounge area at your lodge. The beauty of this park is just watching wildlife casually stroll by.

Day 5: Walking Safaris in South Luangwa

You can’t visit South Luangwa without trying its famous walking safaris. It’s a unique way to experience the bush up close. Walk with a guide and a scout, who’ll keep you safe as you learn about tracking animals and observing smaller details in nature.

Spend the rest of the day unwinding at your lodge or getting to know other travelers.

Day 6: South Luangwa to Livingstone

Catch a flight or start the full-day drive to Livingstone, home of the mighty Victoria Falls. After checking into your accommodation, consider an evening cruise on the Zambezi River. It’s a peaceful way to end the day and you might spot hippos and crocs.

Day 7: Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is the main event today. Start early and explore both the Zambian and Zimbabwe sides of the falls. The local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means “The Smoke that Thunders,” and you’ll understand why when you arrive.

After exploring the falls, head to the Zambian side’s viewpoints for some incredible photos. Dry off by enjoying lunch with a view of the river.

Day 8: Adventure Around Victoria Falls

Today’s your chance to get an adrenaline rush. There are plenty of options: gorge swinging, whitewater rafting, or even bungee jumping over the Zambezi River. However, if you’re not into thrill-seeking, go for a more relaxing afternoon by visiting Mukuni Village for a cultural tour.

If you’re up for it, spend the late afternoon on a helicopter ride over the falls. It’s an unforgettable way to see the full scale of Victoria Falls.

Day 9: Relax in Livingstone

Today’s all about relaxing. You can return for more hikes around Victoria Falls if you like, or visit the Livingstone Museum for insights into Zambia’s history and culture.

In the afternoon, explore the local craft markets or grab a cold drink on the banks of the Zambezi River.

Day 10: Livingstone to Lower Zambezi National Park

It’s time to head to Lower Zambezi National Park for a few days of game viewing and fishing. You can either fly into the local airstrip or drive (both take about half a day).

Once you arrive, settle into your accommodation and rest up for the exciting days ahead. Depending on your schedule, take a short evening safari or relax by the river.

Day 11: Safari and Canoeing in Lower Zambezi National Park

Start your day with a safari drive; scout for elephants, lions, and maybe even a leopard. Come afternoon, try canoeing on the Zambezi River. Paddling between the pods of hippos and crocs is an adventure you won’t forget.

This evening, join another safari drive or enjoy a quiet dinner under the stars.

Day 12: Fishing on the Zambezi

Lower Zambezi is a top spot for fishing, especially for tigerfish (catch-and-release). Spend part of your day trying your hand at fishing or take another walking safari if that’s more your vibe. Wildlife here is abundant, so every experience feels wild.

In the afternoon, kick back at your lodge or cabin before heading out on a sunset river cruise with a guide.

Day 13: Fly Back to Lusaka

Say goodbye to the Zambezi region and catch a flight back to Lusaka. You’ll likely spend most of the day traveling, so once you arrive in Lusaka, keep things easy.

Enjoy a low-key dinner at a local restaurant and maybe pick up any last-minute gifts or souvenirs at Manda Hill Shopping Centre.

Day 14: Departure

It’s your last day in Zambia. Depending on your flight time, you might squeeze in a visit to a coffee shop or one final museum, or just take it easy.

Pack up your bags and get ready for your onward journey. Zambia will leave you with memories, stories, and likely a desire to return one day.
