Visa Requirements for Traveling to Zambia

Zambia Visa Requirements: A Traveler’s Guide

Traveling to Zambia is pretty straightforward, but you’ll want to make sure you know the visa requirements before you go. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Let’s break down the visa process, so you can make your travel planning as easy as possible.

Visa Types for Zambia

Tourist Visa

If you’re planning a holiday trip to Zambia, most travelers will need to apply for a tourist visa. This visa allows you to explore Zambia for up to 90 days from the date of issue.

Business Visa

For business travelers, Zambia offers a business visa that is valid for up to 30 days. If you need extra time, you can apply for an extension once inside the country. Make sure you have documents proving the purpose of your business.

Transit Visa

If Zambia is a stop on your trip and you’re staying less than 7 days, you’ll need a transit visa. It’s a quick and easy option if you’re just passing through.

Visa-Exempt Countries

Some countries are visa-exempt, meaning citizens from these countries do not need a visa for a stay of 30 days or less. Here are some examples:

  • South Africa
  • Botswana
  • Mauritius
  • Barbados
  • Jamaica

If you’re from one of these countries and staying under 30 days, all you’ll need is a valid passport to enter Zambia.

Countries Eligible for Zambia’s E-Visa

Many nationalities are eligible for an e-visa, which saves you a trip to the embassy. You can apply for the e-visa online before you leave. Some countries eligible for the e-visa include:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • Australia

The e-visa is available for tourism, business, and transit purposes. Make sure to apply at least a few days before your trip, as the approval might take up to five business days.

How to Apply for the E-Visa

Applying for the e-visa is easy. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Step 1: Visit the Zambia E-Visa Website

Go to the official Zambian government e-visa website and create an account. Once you have an account, you can start your application.

Step 2: Fill in the Application Form

Provide your personal information including your full name, nationality, and passport details. You’ll also need to choose the type of visa you’re applying for and submit scans of your passport and passport-sized photo.

Step 3: Pay the Visa Fee

Pay the fee using a credit or debit card. The fee depends on the type of visa you’re applying for. For a single-entry tourist visa, expect to pay around 50 USD.

Step 4: Wait for Confirmation

After submitting your application, you’ll get an email confirming your e-visa approval. Print out the confirmation and bring it with you when you enter Zambia.

Visa on Arrival

If you prefer to sort out your visa when you land, Zambia also offers visas on arrival for citizens of most countries. This is available at all major airports and land borders. The visa fees are the same as online applications.

Exceptions and Special Cases

Multiple-Entry Visas

If you’re planning to enter Zambia more than once in the same trip, you may want to apply for a multiple-entry visa. This visa is valid for up to 90 days and costs around 80 USD.

KAZA UniVisa

If you’re also visiting Zimbabwe, you can apply for the KAZA UniVisa. It covers both Zambia and Zimbabwe and is good for up to 30 days. The cost is around 50 USD, and you can get it at major airports or border ports in those two countries.

Practical Advice for Your Visa Application

Before applying, check that your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Also, if you are applying for an e-visa, apply a couple of weeks before your trip to allow enough time for processing.

It’s a good idea to carry printed copies of your visa approval email and other travel documents. While Zambia’s entry process is usually smooth, it’s better to be prepared.

Lastly, keep in mind that visa rules can change. Always double-check with your embassy or on Zambia’s official online visa platform before your travel date to ensure everything goes smoothly.
