Weather in Zimbabwe: What to Expect Year-Round

Zimbabwe enjoys a mostly tropical climate, but the actual weather you’ll experience largely depends on altitude. In higher areas like Harare, temperatures tend to be much cooler and more pleasant, while lower regions can get quite hot, especially during summer. It’s important to be prepared for some heat but also for cooler mornings and evenings in certain regions.

There are two main seasons: the wet season (November to March) and the dry season (April to October). These seasons will play a big role in determining what your experience will feel like and when to plan your trip. The rainy season will bring heavy rain showers that can make certain roads hard to travel on, especially in rural areas. The dry season, on the other hand, is perfect for wildlife viewing and general outdoor activities.

Best Time to Visit

If you want to go on safaris or visit national parks, the dry season (April to October) is the best time. Animals gather around waterholes and are easier to spot, plus mosquitoes are less common. If you don’t mind a little rain and want to avoid the crowds, the wet season can also be a good time to explore—especially for landscape photography when the country is at its greenest.

Practical Packing Tips

During the dry season, pack light, breathable clothing for the warm days and a light jacket for the cooler mornings and evenings. Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, as the sun can be harsh. During the wet season, make room for a rain jacket and waterproof shoes, and expect warmer, more humid conditions during the day.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in January

January is right in the middle of the rainy season. You can expect rain almost every day, typically in the afternoons and evenings. Temperatures remain warm, especially in low-lying areas, averaging between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F). If you’re planning to visit Victoria Falls, this is when the water flow is at its strongest.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in February

February continues the rainy patterns from January, with heavy showers mainly in the afternoon. Temperatures remain warm, though humidity levels can be higher, especially near the rivers. Some roads in rural areas could be difficult or muddy, so plan accordingly if you’re heading to remote spots.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in March

March is still part of the rainy season, but rainfall tends to start decreasing. You might have more dry mornings, but keep that rain jacket handy in case of those sudden afternoon storms. Temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F) on average. Towards the end of March, you’ll see fewer storms as the dry season approaches.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in April

April marks the start of the dry season and it’s one of the most pleasant months to visit the country. The rains have mostly stopped and temperatures drop slightly, averaging around 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). In general, this is a great time to see wildlife, as animals start to gather at rivers and watering holes.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in May

May is cooler and dry, making it a perfect time for outdoor activities. Morning and evening temperatures can dip as low as 10°C (50°F), so it’s a good idea to bring some warm clothing. Days, however, will be sunny and warm, reaching around 25°C (77°F). Expect clear skies and lower humidity.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in June

June is one of the coldest months in Zimbabwe, especially in higher areas like Harare. Morning temperatures can fall below 10°C (50°F), so pack a good sweater or jacket. Days remain mild, about 22°C (72°F), but warm layers for early mornings are a must—especially if you’re heading out early for a safari.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in July

July is another cool and dry month, with temperatures much like June. Expect cool mornings (sometimes dipping near 5°C/41°F) and warmer afternoons, with highs around 23°C (73°F). Although it’s dry, the sights are spectacular this time of year. Wildlife viewing is still at its best, with animals continuing to gather around water sources.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in August

August remains dry but slightly warmer than June and July. Early mornings are still chilly, but the days can reach up to 27°C (81°F). Bring a mix of layers, especially if you’ll be out in the morning or after sunset. It’s still prime game-viewing time, as the bush is thinner, and animals are easier to spot.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in September

September marks the transition into hotter weather. Temperatures rise, especially in the low-lying areas, with highs around 30°C (86°F). Mornings and evenings are warmer, making it much more comfortable. Wildlife viewing is still fantastic, and September is one of the best months to visit the country.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in October

October is hot! In the lowlands, like around Zambezi National Park, temperatures can hit 35°C (95°F) or higher. Although this is an excellent time to see wildlife as the land remains dry before the rains, be prepared for the heat. Hydrate frequently and bring light, breathable clothing.

Zimbabwe’s Weather in November

November is the beginning of the rainy season but still mostly dry during the first half of the month. While daytime temperatures remain high, storms begin popping up, particularly toward the end of the month. It’s still an exciting time to visit as the rains begin to rejuvenate the landscape. Pack an umbrella or rain jacket!

Zimbabwe’s Weather in December

By December, Zimbabwe is fully entrenched in its wet season. You’ll see rain most days, but don’t expect rain all day. Mornings are often bright and sunny, with storms coming in the afternoon. Temperatures remain high, but humidity can increase. This time of year is great for experiencing Zimbabwe’s lush green scenery—just be flexible with your plans in case of sudden downpours.
