Day 1: Arrive in Bandar Seri Begawan
Touch down in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Once you’ve settled in, head out and take it easy. Get a feel for the city’s vibe while strolling along the waterfront. Stop by the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. It sparkles in the sun and even more so at night with its lights.
Later, take a leisurely walk over to the nearby Yayasan Complex, a shopping area with cafes and small shops. Grab a quick bite to eat, maybe some traditional Bruneian food like ambuyat, a sago-based dish. It might take some getting used to but it’s worth trying!
Day 2: Explore Brunei’s Cultural Heritage
Kick off the day by visiting the Brunei Royal Regalia Museum. It’s a great way to understand the country’s rich history and its royal family. You’ll find plenty of royal items, including crowns and chariots, and it’s free to enter, which is always a bonus.
In the afternoon, head to Kampong Ayer, the “Water Village.” Spend a couple of hours walking around this floating village where locals still live on stilts above the river. You can hop on a water taxi, take a boat ride, or just walk across the bridges connecting the homes. It’s a peaceful way to observe local life and get a slice of unconventional Bruneian culture.
Day 3: Tasek Lama Recreational Park
Start your morning with a visit to Tasek Lama Recreational Park, not too far from the city center. Go for a hike on one of the park’s many trails, or just relax near the waterfall. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb the park’s hills and take in panoramic views of Bandar Seri Begawan.
If you’re up for more exploring, check out Gadong Night Market later in the day. It’s packed with locals and amazing street food. Try nasi katok, a simple but delicious local dish of rice, fried chicken, and sambal.
Day 4: Day Trip to Ulu Temburong National Park
It’s time to escape the city and dive into Brunei’s rainforests. Grab breakfast and then hop on a boat to Temburong District, where you’ll find Ulu Temburong National Park. The boat ride itself is a scenic adventure.
Once at the park, take a canopy walk high up above the trees. The chance to see wildlife here is high: hornbills, gibbons, and even the occasional proboscis monkey. Afterward, you can cool off with a swim in one of the natural pools or just relax by the river. It’s a full-day trip, but you won’t regret it.
Day 5: Relaxing at Pantai Muara Beach
You’ve had a few full days, so ease into today by heading north of the city to Pantai Muara Beach. This beach is quiet and peaceful with golden sand and calm waves. Spend the morning relaxing or dipping in the ocean.
In the afternoon, you can explore the nearby Wisma Jaya area. There are some cozy cafes and local eateries where you can grab food after your beach outing. It’s the perfect way to slow down and catch your breath mid-trip.
Day 6: Visit Jerudong Park Playground
Today’s a bit more fun and lighthearted. Head to Jerudong Park, an amusement park that’s great for families or even if you’re just young at heart. It’s not as big or extravagant as parks in other countries, but it’s a favorite spot for locals. Try out the Ferris wheel or other rides.
Before the day ends, check out the Jerudong Park Food Court nearby. This is another great spot for local bites, from satay to chicken wings.
Day 7: Brunei Museum and Malay Technology Museum
Take a cultural deep-dive today. Start with the Brunei Museum, which showcases the country’s Islamic arts, natural history, and Bruneian culture. You’ll get a better understanding of where Brunei fits in the cultural map of Southeast Asia.
Next, wander over to the Malay Technology Museum. It’s a small museum but packed with information on the indigenous technology used throughout history in Brunei Bay and Kampong Ayer. Both museums are interesting and a great way to learn more about the country.
Day 8: Exploring Tutong District
Venture outside of the capital again by heading to the Tutong District. Rent a car and drive through the countryside. One of the key highlights is Pantai Seri Kenangan, a picturesque coastal strip that’s popular with locals. It’s a relaxed place where you can unwind.
Tutong is also a good place to stop by the Tasbee Meliponiculture Farm, where you can learn about honey production in Brunei and grab some delicious, fresh honey to take home.
Day 9: Visit the Istana Nurul Iman
On your second-to-last day, visit Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei. While you can’t enter most of the year, the palace is open to the public during Hari Raya. Even seeing it from the outside is impressive—it’s one of the largest residential palaces in the world!
In the afternoon, head back to Bandar Seri Begawan and wander through Tamu Kianggeh, a riverside market. It’s a fantastic place to pick up local snacks and a couple of souvenirs.
Day 10: Departure
On your final day, take some time to simply enjoy the city before you head out. There’s no need to rush. Spend a few more moments at a local cafe or just take a final stroll along the river.
If you have time, pop back into any places you feel like you didn’t get enough of. Or, just reflect and relax before it’s time to catch your flight.
