Day 1: Arrival in Bandar Seri Begawan
Start your journey in Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. This peaceful, small city is full of cultural spots and a great introduction to the nation. After checking in at your hotel, take some time getting familiar with the area around you.
Head over to the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. This place is an icon of Brunei. The golden dome and surrounding lagoons look like something out of a movie. You’ll need to dress modestly, but the mosque welcomes visitors inside when it’s not used for prayers.
For the evening, wander through the Gadong Night Market. Here, you’ll find all kinds of local street food: grilled meats, satay, fried bananas, and noodles. Prices are cheap, and the atmosphere gives you a great sense of daily life in Brunei.
Day 2: Kampong Ayer and Local Culture
On your second day, dive into a piece of the city’s history: Kampong Ayer. This massive water village sits on the Brunei River. Historically, it was the center of culture and commerce, and today many people still live there. You can walk between the buildings on wooden walkways, or take a boat tour to get the full experience.
For a deeper look into Brunei’s culture, visit the Brunei Museum. This place covers everything from archaeological finds to the wealth and history of the Sultanate. Don’t miss the exhibitions on the country’s oil industry, which plays a huge role in Brunei’s economy.
End your day with a visit to Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei. It’s the largest residential palace in the world. While you can’t go inside except during Hari Raya celebrations, you can take pictures from the outside and explore the surrounding area.
Day 3: Ulu Temburong National Park
After a couple of days in Bandar Seri Begawan, it’s time to experience Brunei’s natural beauty. Take a guided tour to Ulu Temburong National Park. This rainforest is sometimes called the “green jewel of Brunei,” and it’s only accessible by boat. The ride there is half the fun!
In the park, make sure to do the canopy walk. It’s a series of walkways high above the forest floor, giving you a stunning view of the jungle below. You may spot wildlife like monkeys and birds, but even if you don’t, it’s incredibly peaceful.
Afterward, make some time for a river trip or a short jungle trek. Your guide can give you suggestions based on the time of year and weather conditions. Most tours include lunch, letting you spend the full day in the wilderness before heading back to the city in the evening.
Day 4: Jerudong Park Playground and Beach
On Day 4, enjoy a relaxed day of fun and leisure. Visit Jerudong Park Playground in the morning. It’s the largest amusement park in Southeast Asia, and while it’s not as flashy as others around the world, it’s a fun way to spend a few hours. You’ll find rides and attractions that appeal to families and solo travelers alike.
In the afternoon, visit Tungku Beach for some downtime. The beach is clean, stretches for miles, and is generally quiet. Bring a towel, relax, and maybe stick around for the sunset. It’s a solid way to unwind after some busy days of sightseeing.
Day 5: Royal Regalia Museum and Tasek Lama Recreational Park
Explore more of Brunei’s heritage by visiting the Royal Regalia Museum in the morning. This museum showcases items related to the royal family, including gifts from foreign dignitaries and objects used in the Sultan’s coronation. The air conditioning is a nice break from the heat, and it’s a great way to better understand Brunei’s monarchy.
In the afternoon, switch gears and head to Tasek Lama Recreational Park, a good spot for getting outdoors without leaving the city. Walk the trails, stretch your legs, and enjoy the surrounding greenery and small waterfalls. It’s not too intense of a hike, but if you want a challenge, there are some uphill paths that provide good views over Bandar Seri Begawan.
Day 6: Tutong and Seri Kenangan Beach
Today, we’ll head out of Bandar Seri Begawan to visit Tutong. This region is different from the capital and offers a slower pace. Start by heading to Tutong town and visit the Tamu Tutong market. You’ll find fresh fruits, crafts, and local delicacies here. If you’re feeling brave, try ambuyat, a traditional sago dish usually served with fish or shrimp.
After exploring town, make your way to Seri Kenangan Beach. Located on a thin strip of land, this beach has the South China Sea on one side and the Tutong River on the other. It’s a great spot for a picnic and another peaceful beach day. Spend the afternoon lounging or exploring the surrounding area.
Day 7: Return to Bandar Seri Begawan and Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
Wrap up your trip by heading back to Bandar Seri Begawan. If you haven’t had the chance yet, visit Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, the largest mosque in Brunei. It’s an impressive sight with its 29 golden domes, and visiting is a great way to reflect on your time in Brunei.
In the afternoon, wander around the city, do some last-minute shopping, or enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. Brunei is known for its seafood dishes, so take this last opportunity to try something new.
By evening, it’s time to head to the airport and say goodbye to Brunei. Seven days give you a solid glimpse into this small yet fascinating country, with a mix of culture, nature, and relaxation.
