Day 1: Arrival in Siem Reap
Your trip begins in Siem Reap, the gateway to the world-famous Angkor Wat. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and take some time to explore the surrounding area.
Explore the Local Markets
In the afternoon, check out Siem Reap’s local markets. Psar Chaa (Old Market) and the Night Market are great spots to get familiar with the city’s vibe. Stroll around the colorful stalls, sample street food, and pick up some souvenirs. It’s an easy, relaxed way to kick off your adventure.
Sunset at Angkor Wat
Later in the day, head over to Angkor Wat for a sunset visit. While sunrise is more famous, the sunset is just as impressive and less crowded. Make your way to Phnom Bakheng Hill if you want a panoramic view or stay near the temple itself to catch the sunset reflecting off the main structure.
Get an early night’s rest because Day 2 will be packed!
Day 2: Angkor Wat & Angkor Thom
Morning at Angkor Wat
Set your alarm early to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat—it’s worth the 4:30 AM wake-up call. After taking in the sunrise, spend the next few hours exploring the massive archaeological site. Visit Angkor Wat’s main areas like the central sanctuary, bas-reliefs, and surrounding courtyards.
Visit Angkor Thom and the Bayon Temple
After lunch and a short break, continue your Angkor adventure with a visit to Angkor Thom. This former capital of the Khmer empire is home to the Bayon Temple, famous for its giant stone-carved faces that watch you from all angles. Take your time walking among these impressive structures.
Ta Prohm (the “Tomb Raider” Temple)

No visit to Angkor is complete without visiting Ta Prohm, the temple made famous in the “Tomb Raider” movie. It’s known for the giant trees and roots growing over the temple ruins. You’ll get some stunning photo ops here!
Return to Siem Reap for a relaxing evening. Enjoy some local Khmer cuisine at one of the popular restaurants in town.
Day 3: Explore Phnom Penh
In the morning, take a bus or flight to Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s bustling capital.

Visit the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
In the afternoon, visit two important sites to understand Cambodia’s tragic past: the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21). These locations are somber but vital to understanding the history of the Khmer Rouge era. While it’s a heavy experience, it offers crucial insights into the country’s resilience.
Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda
Shift gears in the late afternoon by visiting the Royal Palace, which is still home to Cambodia’s monarchy. The palace grounds are beautiful, and the Silver Pagoda contains a floor covered in silver tiles. It’s a peaceful spot to explore.
Wrap up your day by walking along the riverside promenade, which has lots of nearby dining options.
Day 4: Take a Day Trip to Udong or Kampong Chhnang
Option 1: Day Trip to Udong
For a historical escape, head to the ancient capital of Udong, located about an hour from Phnom Penh. Here, you’ll find stupas, temples, and panoramic views from the hilltop. It’s a peaceful spot, less crowded than Phnom Penh, and offers great insight into Cambodia’s spiritual past.

Option 2: Explore Kampong Chhnang
If you prefer a more rural experience, Kampong Chhnang is a two-hour drive from the capital. It’s famous for its pottery making, and you can watch artisans at work. You can also take a boat tour along the river to see floating villages and the natural beauty surrounding the area.
Both trips can easily be done in a single day and offer a change of pace from city life.
Day 5: Relax on Koh Rong Samloem
After soaking up Cambodia’s history and culture, it’s time to unwind. From Phnom Penh, take an early morning bus to Sihanoukville, then hop on a ferry to Koh Rong Samloem.
Chill on the Beach
Once you arrive on Koh Rong Samloem, drop your bags and hit the beach. This island is known for its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Saracen Bay is the main spot where most of the accommodations are, but it’s still relatively quiet and peaceful.

Optional: Snorkeling or Diving
If you’re feeling adventurous, there are plenty of snorkeling and diving trips available. The coral reefs around the island are home to lots of marine life. Even if you’re not a fan of diving, snorkeling is a great, easy way to see the underwater world.
Sunset at Lazy Beach
Finish the day at Lazy Beach. It’s a beautiful spot for a sunset drink, and the vibe here is laid back. It’s about a 30-minute walk from Saracen Bay, but it’s worth the hike for a more secluded experience.
Spend the night in paradise, either relaxing on the beach or at one of the local bars and restaurants. Koh Rong Samloem is one of the best places to wrap up your 5-day journey through Cambodia.
