Day 1: Arrival in Dili
You’ll most likely start your trip in the capital city, Dili. Dili has a laid-back vibe and gives you a good first impression of East Timor. After checking in at your hotel, spend some time walking around the waterfront. You’ll see local fishermen and get a chance to appreciate some fantastic fresh seafood.
After lunch, visit the Santa Cruz Cemetery, which holds massive historical significance due to the 1991 Santa Cruz Massacre. This is a somber but important introduction to the country’s history. Later in the afternoon, you can head to Cristo Rei, a giant statue of Jesus perched on top of a hill. The hike up is worth it for the views. Stick around for sunset; it’s one of the best in Dili.

If you’re into diving, this is also a good day to explore the underwater world. Dive Timor Lorosae has great dive tours, with diving spots not far from Dili. The coral reefs in this part of the world are largely unexplored, so your diving experience will feel very personal.

Day 3: Atauro Island

Spend the day snorkeling or diving. If you like to dive, Atauro has spots some say are among the most biodiverse in the world. Enjoy the calm village life here and maybe join a local fishing trip if you’re feeling adventurous.

Day 4: Trekking on Atauro Island
Today is all about hiking. Atauro Island has trails for both easy walks and more challenging treks to the highest point of the island, Mount Manucoco. This trail takes a few hours, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline and surrounding areas.
After your hike, spend the afternoon relaxing by the beach. You can grab lunch at your accommodation or bring a packed picnic with you.
In the late afternoon, take a swim in the crystal-clear waters or rent a kayak to explore more of the shoreline.

When you reach Baucau, spend some time exploring the Portuguese-era colonial buildings in the old town. You’ll notice right away that Baucau has a more traditional feel compared to Dili. Visit the old market building and the Baucau Fort for a glimpse into the town’s history.
Later in the day, head to the local beach just a short drive away, known for its soft sand and peaceful setting.

Today, explore the natural beauty near Baucau. Start with a short drive to Venilale, about 30 minutes from Baucau. Here, you can trek to the Grotto of Venilale, a hidden limestone cave that’s not visited by many tourists. It’s a quiet place where you can enjoy the country’s natural beauty in peace.
Not far from Venilale is the Osuala Waterfall. It’s a bit of a hike to reach, but once you’re there, you’ll love the refreshing waters. You can spend the afternoon relaxing and even have a small picnic nearby.

Day 7: Return to Dili

Once you’re back in the capital, you can spend the last few hours before your flight either lounging by the beach or doing some last-minute shopping for souvenirs.
