14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Kuwait

Kuwait might not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a getaway, but this small Gulf nation has a lot to offer. Beautiful architecture, fascinating museums, and authentic markets make it a rewarding destination. Here’s my 14-day itinerary for a cultural dive with some time to relax.

Day 1: Arrival and Relaxation in Kuwait City

Arrive in Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait. After getting settled in your accommodation, take time to relax. Spend the day adjusting to the time zone and exploring the nearby streets. If you’re staying near the city center, wander around Al Mubarakiya Souq, an old marketplace where you can grab an early dinner and experience local life.

Day 2: Kuwait Towers and Al Shaheed Park

Start your day with a visit to the iconic Kuwait Towers. These three towers are one of the country’s most famous landmarks, and the viewing sphere offers great panoramic views of the city and coastline. Afterward, head to Al Shaheed Park, a large and beautifully designed public park where you can enjoy a peaceful walk.

Day 3: Tareq Rajab Museum and Shopping in the Avenues

The Tareq Rajab Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the heritage of Kuwait. It houses an incredible collection of Islamic arts and crafts. After exploring the museum, head to The Avenues—a massive shopping complex that offers everything from luxury brands to local eateries. It’s a great place to combine some shopping with lunch.

Day 4: Discover the Grand Mosque

No visit to Kuwait is complete without seeing the Grand Mosque. It’s the largest mosque in the country, known for its beautiful architecture and spacious interiors. Book a guided tour in advance, which is often free, and learn more about the Islamic culture. Spend the afternoon walking around the nearby areas or relaxing in a café.

Day 5: Escape to Failaka Island

Treat yourself to a day trip to Failaka Island. This island shows a different side of Kuwait, with both archaeological sites and a deserted village abandoned after the Iraqi invasion. Take a ferry from the Marina Crescent area, and spend your afternoon walking around the ruins and remnants of ancient civilizations.

Day 6: National Museum and Maritime Museum

Today, dive deeper into Kuwait’s culture with a visit to the Kuwait National Museum. It provides a great overview of the country’s history and culture. Afterward, visit the adjacent Maritime Museum to get a glimpse into Kuwait’s seafaring past. In the evening, enjoy a traditional seafood dinner in one of the many casual local restaurants.

Day 7: Relaxation Day at Marina Beach

After six days of exploring, take it easy at Marina Beach. This popular spot offers a peaceful retreat in the middle of Kuwait City. Head to the sands in the morning, take a dip, and bask in the sun. Nearby restaurants offer seaside dining, so it’s the perfect place to unwind.

Day 8: Al Qurain Martyrs Museum and 360 Mall

Take a somber yet important visit to the Al Qurain Martyrs Museum. This former house now stands as a memorial to the resistance during the first Gulf War. The experience is sobering but historically significant. Once you’ve absorbed that, lift your spirits by heading to the 360 Mall, where you can enjoy a modern shopping experience along with some natural greenery in the mall’s unique indoor garden.

Day 9: Friday Market and Kuwait Scientific Center

In the morning, explore the Friday Market (also known as Souq Al Juma’a). This bustling flea market is perfect for those wanting to try their hand at haggling. From antiques to textiles, you never know what you might find. Later, in the afternoon, visit the Kuwait Scientific Center, home to an aquarium, IMAX theater, and Discovery Place, all enjoyable for families or curious solo travelers.

Day 10: Explore Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre

Spend today diving into Kuwait’s art and cultural scene by visiting the Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre. This state-of-the-art complex hosts concerts, exhibitions, and public events, and the stunning architecture alone makes it worth the visit. Check the schedule in advance, as you might be able to catch a show or concert during your trip.

Day 11: Visit the House of Mirrors

Hidden in plain sight in Yukon neighborhood is the quirky House of Mirrors. Created by artist Lidia Qattan, this unexpected gem is covered in glass and mosaic art, inside and out. It’s a unique experience you’ll only find in Kuwait. Since it’s a private house, you need to book your visit in advance. Spend the rest of the day browsing nearby streets or relaxing at a quiet café.

Day 12: Al Kout Beach and Souk

Journey south to Fahaheel and spend time at Al Kout Beach. It’s perfect for those who prefer a mix of relaxation and exploration. After soaking up the sun, head over to Al Kout Souk, where you can find traditional products and pick up some souvenirs. It’s a great way to see life outside of central Kuwait City.

Day 13: Day Trip to the Kuwait Red Fort in Jahra

Make your way to Jahra, a short drive from Kuwait City, to see the Kuwait Red Fort. This historical site played a vital role in Kuwaiti defense during the early 20th century. While it’s not as popular as other tourist destinations, it’s a great way to explore some off-the-beaten-path history. Once you return to Kuwait City, enjoy your last evening with a memorable dining experience.

Day 14: Departure

End your trip by strolling around the city one last time. Head to a café, grab coffee, or walk along the seafront before catching your flight. Reflect on your time in Kuwait and start planning your next adventure!
