Day 1: Arrival in Malé
You’ve landed in the Maldives! After clearing immigration, catch a speedboat or seaplane to your resort or guesthouse. Acclimate yourself to the tropical weather and settle in at your accommodations. Don’t do too much on the first day. Take the time to rest, relax by the pool, and perhaps catch your first sunset!
Day 2: Explore Malé
Today, head back to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. It’s small but packed with sights. Start at the Maldives Islamic Centre, then visit the nearby Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque), which is made from coral stone. Stroll through the local fish and produce markets to see some local life in action.
Finish the day with a visit to the National Museum to get a glimpse of Maldivian history. Before heading back to your accommodation, grab dinner at a local restaurant in Malé.
Day 3: Hulhumalé Beach and Water Sports
Spend the day on Hulhumalé Island, which is connected by bridge to Malé. This is a quieter alternative to the busy capital. You can relax on the beach or if you’re feeling adventurous, try some water sports like jet skiing, snorkeling, or wakeboarding.
In the afternoon, consider taking a sailing trip or renting a kayak to explore Hulhumalé’s green lagoon. The calm waters make it ideal for beginners.
Day 4: Visit a Local Island
Make today about cultural immersion by visiting one of the local islands. You can take a public ferry or arrange a day trip through your hotel. Islands like Dhiffushi and Maafushi are great picks as they’re less commercialized compared to the resorts.
On a local island, experience Maldivian life up close. Walk through the streets, visit some of the local cafes, and don’t miss the chance to chat with locals. Some islands also offer cultural performances in the evenings.
Day 5: Snorkeling and Marine Life
The Maldives is a dream for snorkelers! Today’s focus is all about the underwater world. Join a snorkeling tour that takes you to different reefs, where you can spot colorful coral, schools of fish, turtles, or even manta rays.
Many resorts or local tour operators offer guided snorkeling trips that go out to multiple locations in one day. After a long day of swimming, you’ll appreciate a calm evening, perhaps with a sunset dinner back at your resort.
Day 6: Dive into Maldivian Cuisine
Take part in a local cooking class to get a deeper understanding of traditional Maldivian dishes. Tuna is a staple here, so it will likely play a big part in your cooking. Learn how to make dishes like “mas huni” (a tuna coconut salad) or try cooking “garudhiya,” a fish soup.
Afterward, spend the afternoon on some downtime. Whether that means resting at your accommodation, going for a casual walk, or watching the sunset is up to you.
Day 7: Luxury Resort Day
It’s time for a classic Maldives experience: a luxury resort! Even if you’re staying at a guesthouse, you can still book a day pass to one of the nearby luxury resorts. Spend the day lounging on powder-white beaches and swimming in crystal-clear lagoons. Enjoy high-end amenities like infinity pools or spa treatments.
Indulge with lunch at the resort’s restaurant and make sure to take in the sunset over one of the most beautiful beaches you’re ever likely to see.
Day 8: Dolphin Watching
Today’s all about wildlife. Book a dolphin-watching tour and head out to sea. The Maldives is home to pods of playful dolphins, and you’ll have the chance to see them up close. Most tours are timed for early morning or late afternoon, when dolphins are most active.
Wrap up the day with a beachside dinner. Many resorts or guesthouses arrange private dinners right on the beach if you want a romantic option.
Day 9: Sandbank Picnic and Island Hopping
Spend the day hopping between smaller islands and sandbanks. Many tour operators offer island-hopping excursions that take you to uninhabited isles where you can have a private picnic lunch. These little sandbanks are the perfect place to relax in solitude.
Swimming in the shallow waters around these sandbanks feels like your own private paradise. Afterward, you’ll have a chance to visit other less-visited islands in the area.
Day 10: Relaxation and Departure
Your time in the Maldives has flown by. For your last day, you might want to simply relax one final time. Take one last dip in the ocean, soak up some sun, or buy some local souvenirs.
If you’re flying out from Malé, make sure you head to the airport with plenty of time—boats and ferries can be unpredictable! Say goodbye to the paradise you’ve enjoyed over the past 10 days.
