Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Welcome to Mongolia! Your journey starts in Ulaanbaatar, the country’s bustling capital. After touching down, check in to your hotel and take a brief rest to shake off any jet lag.
Once rested, start by visiting Sukhbaatar Square, the city’s main square. It’s the perfect place to get a feel for the downtown area and its historical significance. You can also visit the nearby National Museum of Mongolia to understand more about Mongolia’s rich history.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Mongolian meal like khorkhog (roast lamb). It’s a great way to begin immersing yourself in the local cuisine.
Day 2: Ulaanbaatar Exploration
On your second day, visit Gandan Monastery, Mongolia’s most important Buddhist site. Your morning will be well spent absorbing Buddhist culture and marveling at the stunning architecture.
Afterwards, hike up to Zaisan Memorial for a panoramic view of the city. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect for a bit and enjoy the contrasting views of Ulaanbaatar’s modern side and green landscapes.
In the afternoon, visit the Bogd Khan Winter Palace, a perfect glimpse into history and one of the few royal palaces that survived Mongolia’s turbulent past.
Day 3: Terelj National Park
Today, head out of the city to Terelj National Park, which is about 1.5 hours from Ulaanbaatar. Here, you’ll find some of Mongolia’s stunning natural beauty. Famous for its unique rock formations, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for scenic hikes.
The Turtle Rock formation is a must-see; it’s popular for taking photos. You can also visit Aryabal Monastery here for a spiritual break and some light hiking.
Stay overnight at a ger camp and experience sleeping in a traditional Mongolian yurt.
Day 4: Visit the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex
After breakfast at the ger camp, set out to visit the stunning Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex. At 40 meters high, this is one of the largest statues in the world, and it offers breathtaking views from the top.
Spend a couple of hours learning about Mongolia’s history and its connection to its greatest leader, Genghis Khan. Then, return to Ulaanbaatar in the evening to relax and wind down from an engaging day.
Day 5: Journey to Khustai National Park
It’s time to leave the city again and venture to Khustai National Park. This national park is famous as the home of the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse), Mongolia’s wild horse that was reintroduced after going extinct.
You can take a guided tour to spot wildlife, including deer, foxes, and marmots. The sprawling landscapes here are diverse and offer a peaceful retreat from city life. After a day spent with nature, you’ll overnight at a nearby ger camp.
Day 6: Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery
Today, head west to the ancient city of Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire. Though little remains of the old city, its significance is undeniable.
Visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery next, one of Mongolia’s oldest monasteries. The cultural and spiritual history here is fascinating, and the surrounding landscapes are also beautiful.
End your day by enjoying a quiet evening at a ger camp near Karakorum.
Day 7: Orkhon Valley Nomadic Experience
Today, you’ll explore the peaceful Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This valley is home to many nomadic herders, and it offers an excellent opportunity to meet and interact with local families.
You’ll likely be invited to share tea with a family in their ger. They might even show you how they make traditional dairy products. It’s a memorable way to immerse yourself in Mongolian culture.
After a full day surrounded by nature and nomadic life, stay another night in a ger camp.
Day 8: Tsenkher Hot Springs
After several active days, it’s time to relax. Head towards the Tsenkher Hot Springs, located in a quiet valley among beautiful mountain scenery.
Soak in the natural hot springs while enjoying a lovely view of the surrounding mountains. It’s pure relaxation before the final leg of your journey. You’ll sleep at a local ger camp near the springs, but make sure to enjoy an evening soak too!
Day 9: Khogno Khan Nature Reserve
Make your way to Khogno Khan Nature Reserve, sometimes referred to as “Mini Gobi” due to its diverse landscapes, including sand dunes, steppes, and rocky mountains.
Explore the sand dunes, do some hiking, or even ride a camel if you’re feeling adventurous. The Uvgun Monastery, hidden in the mountains, is a tranquil spot to visit.
Stay overnight at yet another traditional ger, giving you one more chance to sleep under the stars in true Mongolian nomad style.
Day 10: Return to Ulaanbaatar
As your trip winds down, head back to Ulaanbaatar. You’ll likely arrive by midday, leaving you time for some last-minute sightseeing or shopping.
If you’re a fan of art and culture, you can visit the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts, which showcases traditional Mongolian art and sculpture. And don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs from the State Department Store.
In the evening, enjoy a special farewell dinner featuring more of Mongolia’s traditional dishes like buuz (steamed dumplings) and khuushuur (fried meat pies). Then, toast to your amazing adventure!
