10-Day Itinerary for Nepal: A Complete Guide

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

After you land in Kathmandu, head straight to Thamel, the bustling heart of the city. It’s full of traveler-friendly guesthouses, restaurants, and shops. Take your time to settle in and soak up the atmosphere.

In the afternoon, visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), located on a hilltop. It’s one of Kathmandu’s iconic landmarks, offering panoramic views of the city. Stroll around the stupa, watch the prayer flags flutter, and listen to the chants of monks.

End your day with a quiet dinner at one of Thamel’s rooftop restaurants and enjoy the first glimpse of Nepali culture.

Day 2: Exploring Kathmandu’s Ancient Sights

Start your day with a peaceful visit to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world. The gentle hum of prayer wheels and the scent of incense will create a memorable experience.

Next on the list is Pashupatinath, the most important Hindu temple in Nepal. Walk along the Bagmati River where cremation ceremonies often take place, providing insight into Nepalese culture and spirituality.

In the afternoon, head to Durbar Square. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient temples, palaces, and shrines. You can easily spend a couple of hours wandering around this historical area.

Day 3: Journey to Nagarkot

After two busy days in Kathmandu, it’s time to escape to the peaceful village of Nagarkot. Rent a car or take a local bus (around a 2-hour ride). Nagarkot is famous for its stunning views of the Himalayas, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Check into a guesthouse with a view, then spend the afternoon walking through peaceful pine forests and small village trails. It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in nature and relax.

Make sure to wake up early tomorrow for the sunrise over the Himalayas.

Day 4: Sunrise in Nagarkot and Bhaktapur Exploration

Wake up before dawn to witness the sun rising over the snowcapped peaks. On clear days, you can even see Mount Everest in the distance!

After breakfast, head back toward Kathmandu, but stop in Bhaktapur, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This town feels like a living museum with its medieval temples, shrines, and squares. Explore the pottery square, taste traditional Nepali yogurt (“juju dhau”), and visit the intricately carved Nyatapola Temple.

In the evening, return to Kathmandu for a night of rest.

Day 5: Begin the Trek to Lukla and Phakding

Today, you’ll fly to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region (you will need to book a flight in advance). The flight is short but thrilling, as you’ll be soaring over incredible landscapes.

Once in Lukla, your trek to Phakding (2600m) begins. It’s about a 3-hour walk through beautiful pine forests, crossing rivers and small villages. Spend the night at a tea house in Phakding, where you can enjoy simple but hearty meals.

Day 6: Trek to Namche Bazaar

Today’s walk will take you to the famous Namche Bazaar (3400m), the unofficial capital of the Khumbu region. The trek is long (around 7 hours) but rewarding, with plenty of scenic stops, suspension bridges, and waterfalls along the way.

Namche Bazaar is a vibrant mountain town filled with trekking shops, cafes, bakeries, and markets. Stay at a guesthouse here, take time to acclimatize, and enjoy the view of the mountains towering above you.

Day 7: Acclimatization and Exploration in Namche Bazaar

To avoid altitude sickness, it’s vital to take a rest day. Spend the day exploring Namche Bazaar. There’s the Sherpa Museum, where you can learn about the history and traditions of the Sherpa people.

You can also hike to the Everest View Hotel for incredible views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Then head back to town, where you can relax, read a book, or chat with fellow trekkers.

Day 8: Trek Back to Lukla

Today it’s time to head back the way you came. Retrace your steps to Lukla. The return journey will take you 6-7 hours, but the beauty around you will keep your spirits high.

Once you arrive in Lukla, celebrate with a hot meal and some rest.

Day 9: Fly Back to Kathmandu

Catch an early flight back to Kathmandu. Spend the afternoon visiting Patan Durbar Square, another ancient, UNESCO-listed site just outside of Kathmandu. This square is full of intricate architecture, art, and culture.

Alternatively, if you’re tired, relax at your hotel or grab a drink at one of the cafes in Thamel. It’s your last full day in Nepal, so it’s a good time to take it easy and reflect on your adventure.

Day 10: Departure or Extra Exploration

If your flight is in the evening, spend your morning picking up souvenirs at Thamel’s many shops or visit nearby Garden of Dreams for a tranquil break in the midst of the city.

If you want to explore a bit more, take a detour to the bustling streets of Asan market, where local sellers offer everything from spices to clothing.

When it’s time to head to the airport, make sure to arrive 3 hours before your international flight. Depart with memories of your adventure-filled trip through Nepal.
