Day 1: Arrive in Muscat
Start your adventure by arriving in Muscat, the capital and largest city of Oman. It’s a calm coastal city with a unique blend of old and new. Take some time to settle in and explore the local area.
If you arrive early, stretch your legs with a visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. It’s one of the largest mosques in the world, and its architecture will leave you in awe. Remember to dress modestly, especially when entering a place of worship.
In the evening, wander around Muttrah Corniche. The waterfront promenade is great for catching a sunset or visiting the Muttrah Souq. Grab some frankincense or silver jewelry as souvenirs.
Day 2: Old Muscat and the Al Jalali Fort
Today, explore more of Muscat’s cultural and historical side. Start with Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial palace of the Sultan. Though you can’t go inside, its colorful exterior is worth a photo or two.
Next, head to the Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts. These forts have stood watch over Muscat’s bay for centuries. Climb to the top to get a great view of the coast and city below.
For lunch, try some Omani dishes at a local restaurant. Shuwa (slow-cooked lamb) or Mashuai (grilled kingfish) are solid options.
Spend the afternoon at the National Museum. It’s an excellent place for learning about Oman’s rich history and cultural heritage in a nice air-conditioned setting.
Day 3: Day Trip to Wadi Shab
Now it’s time to escape the city and dive into Oman’s natural beauty. Head to Wadi Shab, which is about 1.5 hours from Muscat. This picturesque canyon is perfect for hiking, and it ends in a series of crystal-clear pools that you can swim in.
The hike takes about 45 minutes, and it’s fairly easy for most people. Be sure to wear good shoes and bring plenty of water. After cooling off in the pools, continue to the secret cave, which is definitely worth the swim.
On your way back to Muscat, stop at Bimmah Sinkhole for a quick dip. It’s one of Oman’s natural wonders, and the clear turquoise waters are very inviting.
Day 4: Explore Nizwa
Today, travel to Nizwa, which is about two hours from Muscat. Nizwa is famous for its fort and souq, and it’s a great place to really get in touch with Oman’s past.
Kick off your day with Nizwa Fort. Built in the 17th century, it’s one of Oman’s most important historical landmarks. Explore the different rooms and climb to the top of the fort’s tower for a panoramic view of Nizwa.
Next, visit the Nizwa Souq. Here, you’ll find everything from dates to handicrafts. Make sure to check out the Friday goat market if you’re visiting then. It’s an interesting (and quite loud) experience!
Day 5: Visit Jebel Akhdar
Jebel Akhdar, or the Green Mountain, is a perfect day trip from Nizwa. The cooler temperatures and beautiful terraced farms make it a refreshing escape.
Spend your day exploring the mountain’s villages and walking along its many trails. If you visit during spring, you might catch the rose harvest. It’s one of the most beautiful times to be at Jebel Akhdar.
Finish the day by finding a scenic spot to enjoy the views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys. It’s easily one of the most breathtaking locations in Oman.
Day 6: Wahiba Sands
Time to experience the Omani desert! Travel to Wahiba Sands, a vast area of stunning sand dunes. You can take a 4WD vehicle to explore the area or ride camels across the dunes.
If you’re up for an adventure, consider spending the night in one of the desert camps. It’s a unique experience, and you’ll get to enjoy a night under a sky full of stars. Don’t forget to try some Omani tea by the campfire as well.
Dune bashing is a must-do in Wahiba Sands. It’s a thrilling experience as you speed up and down towering dunes in a 4WD.
Day 7: Explore Sur and Ras al Jinz
Leave Wahiba Sands behind and head towards Sur, a coastal city known for its traditional dhow shipyards. Swing by the shipyard and watch craftsmen build wooden boats by hand, just like they’ve done for centuries.
After exploring Sur, drive to Ras al Jinz for an unforgettable experience: turtle watching. Oman is one of the best places in the world to see green turtles lay their eggs. You can join a night tour and possibly witness this magical moment.
Day 8: Return to Muscat and Relax
After a few days on the road, it’s time to relax. Head back to Muscat and enjoy a slow day.
If you want some more cultural experiences, you could visit the Royal Opera House or one of Muscat’s museums. Otherwise, relax by the beach or at your hotel’s pool.
Muscat has several great beaches, including the quieter Qurum Beach. This is the perfect spot to unwind after being out in the desert and mountains.
Day 9: Discover Nakhal and Rustaq
On your second-to-last day, take a day trip to Nakhal and Rustaq, towns known for their forts and hot springs.
Your first stop should be Nakhal Fort. It’s perched on top of a rocky hill and offers incredible views of the surrounding date plantations. The fort itself is fascinating, so take your time exploring its rooms and towers.
Afterwards, visit Al Thowarah Hot Springs. You can dip your feet in the warm, mineral-rich waters and relax. It’s peaceful and a great way to wind down after all the sightseeing.
End your day with a visit to Rustaq Fort, another striking Omani fortress with views of nearby mountains and date groves.
Day 10: Last Moments in Muscat
On your last day, keep things simple. Grab any last-minute souvenirs from the souq or enjoy one more walk along the corniche. If you missed it earlier, visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
As your trip comes to an end, take some time to reflect on the amazing diversity of Oman’s landscapes and its warm, welcoming culture. If possible, stop by a café for a final cup of Omani coffee and a few dates.
Heading to the airport, you’ll leave Oman feeling like you’ve experienced something unique. It’s a place that strikes the perfect balance between nature, history, and relaxation.
