14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Oman

Day 1: Arrive in Muscat

Welcome to Oman! Start your journey in Muscat, the capital. After arriving, spend some time settling into your accommodation. If you have the energy, head to the Mutrah Corniche for a gentle evening walk. You’ll find great local food and a scenic view of the harbor.

Muscat is known for its clean streets and traditional architecture. Make sure you get a good night’s rest. You’ll want to be fresh for the next day.

Day 2: Explore Muscat

On your first full day, dive right in. Start your morning with a visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. It’s one of the most impressive mosques in the region, and the details inside will blow your mind. Don’t forget to dress appropriately—everyone is welcome, but modest clothing is required.

Next, stop by the Royal Opera House if you’re interested in the arts or want a quick look at modern Omani architecture. In the afternoon, stroll through the Souq in Mutrah for some shopping and haggling. It’s the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs like silver jewelry or incense.

End your day at Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. The view from these forts over the city is amazing.

Day 3: Day trip to Wadi Shab

Get ready for some adventure! Head out early for a day trip to Wadi Shab. The drive from Muscat takes about 1.5 hours down the coast. Once there, you’ll hike through the valley for around 45 minutes before reaching beautiful turquoise pools.

Bring your swimming gear because, after some light hiking, you can jump right into the water. If you’re brave, swim further into the cave where there’s a hidden waterfall inside.

Day 4: Al Bustan and Qantab Beach

After a day of hiking, let’s slow things down. This will be a lighter “rest” day. Start your morning by visiting Al Bustan Palace. Have breakfast or coffee here while enjoying the seaside views.

Then, relax at Qantab Beach nearby. It’s known for its crystal-clear waters and peaceful vibe. You’ll often see locals fishing or enjoying picnics. It’s a great spot to take a breather.

Spend your evening back in Muscat, maybe at a local café.

Day 5: Road Trip to Nizwa

It’s time to leave Muscat! Head inland today as you make your way to Nizwa. The drive takes around 2 hours, and the scenery along the way is spectacular.

When you arrive in Nizwa, explore Nizwa Fort and its surrounding souq. The fort played a big part in Oman’s history, and you’ll get to climb up the towers for some incredible views.

Don’t miss the famous Nizwa goat market if you arrive on a Friday morning. Locals come to auction off their livestock in a bustling and authentic scene.

Day 6: Jebel Akhdar Mountains

Today, set out for the Jebel Akhdar Mountains, sometimes called “the Green Mountain”. They are close to Nizwa and offer some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ll see in Oman. You’ll need a 4×4 vehicle, but if you don’t have one, many groups run tours up there.

Stop by local fruit orchards and small mountain villages. The cooler air up here is a nice break from the heat.

In the afternoon, try a short hike or simply relax with a picnic while soaking in the mountainous views.

Day 7: Wahiba Sands Desert

No trip to Oman is complete without experiencing the desert. Today you’ll head towards the Wahiba Sands, also known as the Sharqiyah Sands. You’ll need another 4×4 here, and many camps offer organized tours if you don’t want to drive yourself.

As you enter the endless dunes, it feels like another world. Spend your day riding camels and enjoying the vastness of the sand dunes. Stay overnight at a traditional desert camp for a taste of Bedouin hospitality.

Day 8: Sur and Coastal Drive

After a night under the stars, leave the desert and head towards Sur, a coastal town known for dhow-building. Dhows are traditional Omani wooden boats, and you can still visit workshops to see them being made.

After exploring Sur, take the coastal road back towards Muscat. It’s a stunning drive along the cliffs and beaches.

Stop by the Ras Al Jinz Reserve in the evening for a chance to see sea turtles nesting on the beach. This is a unique experience and one you won’t want to miss.

Day 9: Snorkeling at Daymaniyat Islands

Time to hit the water! Today, you’ll board a boat for a day of snorkeling at the Daymaniyat Islands. These islands are a protected marine reserve and are home to colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and sometimes even turtles.

Spend your day swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing on the boat.

By late afternoon, head back to Muscat and take it easy in the evening.

Day 10: Village Life in Misfat al Abriyeen

Ready to discover a hidden gem? Today, you’ll take a day trip to Misfat al Abriyeen, a traditional mountain village that feels like stepping into the past.

The village is famous for its ancient mud houses and terraced gardens. You can wander through alleyways and, if you chat with locals, learn a bit about traditional Omani farming. It’s a peaceful way to spend a day soaking in rural life.

Day 11: Jebel Shams and Grand Canyon of Oman

Today’s adventure will take you to Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, and the site of the Grand Canyon of Oman. Whether you’re into hiking or just want to take in the views, this is a majestic place to escape to.

There are various trails depending on your energy level. If you prefer something easy, you can opt for the Balcony Walk that offers incredible views without being too strenuous.

This area is calm, quiet, and stunning. If it fits your budget, staying overnight at one of the mountain lodges is ideal.

Day 12: Bahla Fort and Nearby Attractions

Bahla Fort is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and today you’ll visit it. The fort is huge and considered one of the most important in Oman’s history.

After exploring Bahla, head over to Jabrin Castle. It’s just a short drive from Bahla and offers some of the best-preserved interiors in any of Oman’s castles.

Day 13: Return to Muscat and Relax

On your second-to-last day, head back to Muscat. It’s been an action-packed trip so far, so today is about taking it easy.

Perhaps use the day to revisit any spots in Muscat that you missed. Even a leisurely day spent at your hotel or by the pool will help. If you’re feeling restless, check out Bait Al Zubair Museum, which houses fantastic collections of Omani artifacts.

Day 14: Departure

All good things come to an end. Use this final day for any last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Muscat. Depending on your flight time, you might squeeze in a visit to Qurum Beach or simply enjoy a coffee with views of the city.

Then, it’s off to the airport to catch your flight home after two incredible weeks in Oman.
