5-Day Itinerary for Traveling Through Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has it all: stunning beaches, ancient ruins, wildlife, and delicious food. If you have just five days, you can still experience a good mix of what this beautiful country has to offer. Here’s a well-rounded itinerary to help you make the most of your visit without feeling too rushed.
Day 1: Colombo
Arriving and Exploring Colombo
Start your Sri Lankan journey in Colombo, the bustling capital. After arriving at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, head to your accommodation and drop off your bags. Colombo is a vibrant city with a mix of colonial history, modernity, and traditional culture.
You can start your exploration at the Galle Face Green, a large oceanfront park perfect for a relaxing evening. If you have time, visit the National Museum of Colombo to get some historical background on the country. Then, wander around Pettah Market, a chaotic but fun place to experience local life. Keep an eye out for Sri Lankan snacks like samosas or fresh fruit drinks.
Wrap up your day with a Sri Lankan dinner. Try some rice and curry at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Pinnawala & Kandy
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
On the morning of Day 2, head to Pinnawala, which is about a two-hour drive from Colombo. Pinnawala is famous for its elephant orphanage, where you can see rescued elephants up close—watch them bathe in the river or feed them.
Arriving in Kandy
After visiting Pinnawala, continue on to Kandy, which is about another 90 minutes by car. This scenic hill city is known for its beautiful lake and lush greenery. Kandy was the ancient capital of Sri Lanka and is rich in both history and culture.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka. The ornate temple houses a tooth relic of the Buddha, attracting devotees from all over the country. You can explore the surrounding temple grounds and take in the peaceful atmosphere.
Enjoy Kandy Lake
In the evening, take a walk around Kandy Lake. It’s a serene spot to enjoy a relaxed stroll after a full day of sightseeing. If you’re hungry, head to one of the local eateries for some hoppers—Sri Lankan pancakes made with fermented rice flour.
Day 3: Sigiriya & Dambulla
Climb Sigiriya Rock
Leave early in the morning and drive to Sigiriya, which will take about 2.5 hours from Kandy. Climb the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the “Lion Rock,” it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most famous landmarks. The climb to the top is challenging but the views from the top are worth it. Take your time to explore the ancient ruins and gardens along the way.
Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple
After Sigiriya, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, just 30 minutes away. This is another UNESCO site with beautifully painted cave temples filled with statues of Buddha. The caves are located on a rock, so you’ll need to climb a bit, but it’s a rewarding experience once you’re at the top.
Stay Overnight Near Habarana
Habarana is just a short drive from Dambulla and a good place to stay the night, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, nature-filled setting. There are plenty of eco-lodges and guesthouses here. Relax and enjoy the peaceful ambiance after a busy day of exploring.

Day 4: Ella
Take the Scenic Train to Ella
On the morning of Day 4, make your way to the nearest train station (from Kandy) and take the famous train ride to Ella. This scenic journey is one of the most beautiful in the world, winding through lush hills and tea plantations. Be sure to reserve your train tickets in advance, as this route is popular.
Ella’s Attractions
Ella is a small town in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, known for its laid-back vibe and beautiful surroundings. After arriving, relax with a cup of Ceylon tea in one of the many tea houses. Try some fresh Sri Lankan roti with coconut sambal for lunch.

Hike Little Adam’s Peak
If you’re feeling up for a short hike, head to Little Adam’s Peak. The trail is easy and the views at the top are beautiful—especially at sunset when the sky turns pink and orange. It’s a great way to end your day with some light exercise and breathtaking landscapes.
Day 5: Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park
Safari at Yala or Udawalawe
For your final day, head out early and make your way to either Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park for a safari. Both are great choices depending on where you’re staying. If you want to spot leopards, Yala might be more tempting for you, while Udawalawe is famous for its large elephant population.
Booking a jeep safari is easy, and you’ll have a chance to see elephants, monkeys, buffalo, and various bird species during your trip.
Return to Colombo or Fly Out
After the safari, depending on your schedule, either make your way back to Colombo (around 4-5 hours by car) or head directly to the airport if you’re flying out from southern Sri Lanka. If you have more time, consider extending your trip and relaxing along the southern beaches like Mirissa before heading home.

Final Tips
Although this itinerary aims for a balance of activities, you can adjust it based on how you like to travel. If you want more relaxation, take extra time in Ella or the beaches in the south. If you’re a culture buff, you might want to add more time in Kandy or even Anuradhapura. Either way, Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with tons to offer, and you’ll love your time here.
Safe travels!
