Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok
Arrive in Thailand at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and get ready to explore the city’s rich culture and bustling activity. Start by settling into your accommodation. You can find plenty of affordable hostels, guesthouses, or boutique hotels, depending on your budget.
Once you’re refreshed, take an afternoon to explore the famous Khao San Road. It’s a backpacker’s paradise full of food stalls, bars, and shops. Grab some street food like Pad Thai and get a taste of the vibrant nightlife. If you’re not a party person, don’t worry—head to a quieter café or take a stroll by the river.
Day 2: Explore Bangkok’s Temples and Canals
Start your second day with a temple tour. Don’t miss the Grand Palace and the nearby Wat Phra Kaew, home to the Emerald Buddha. Head to Wat Pho to see the massive reclining Buddha, where you can also stop for a traditional Thai massage at the nearby massage school.
In the afternoon, take a tour of Bangkok’s canals (called “klongs”) by longtail boat. You’ll see a different side of the city, away from the busy streets. Head back for dinner along the banks of the Chao Phraya River—the views are stunning at sunset.
Day 3: Day Trip to Ayutthaya
Take a day trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam. The historical ruins here are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you’ll have countless temples and Buddha statues to admire, including the iconic Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat.
Getting to Ayutthaya is easy by train (about 1.5 hours each way). Once there, you can either rent a bicycle or hire a tuk-tuk driver for the day to get around. After exploring, grab lunch along the river and be back in Bangkok by early evening.
Day 4: Fly to Chiang Mai
Today, take a short flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, located in Northern Thailand. Once you land, relax and settle into your hotel or guesthouse. Chiang Mai has options for every type of traveler—from budget hostels to luxurious hotels.
In the evening, head to the famous Night Bazaar. It’s one of the best places to shop for local handicrafts, souvenirs, and street food. Afterward, you can explore the city’s relaxed nightlife scene or stroll the streets, soaking in the relaxed vibe.
Day 5: Explore Chiang Mai’s Temples
Chiang Mai is known for its stunning temples. Head to the famous Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang right in the Old City. These temples are not as crowded as those in Bangkok, giving you a peaceful experience.
For lunch, try a local dish like Khao Soi—Northern Thailand’s famous curry noodle dish. Afterward, take a songthaew (shared taxi) or scooter to Doi Suthep, the mountain just outside the city. The temple at the top of Doi Suthep offers an amazing view of the entire city below.
Day 6: Day Trip to Doi Inthanon National Park
Today, take an adventurous day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park, home to the highest peak in Thailand. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers. The park offers amazing hiking trails, waterfalls, and viewpoints.
You can book a tour or rent a car to reach the park. Make sure to visit the twin pagodas and explore the lush forests of the park. You’ll return to Chiang Mai in the evening, where you can relax after a day of trekking.
Day 7: Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary
No trip to Northern Thailand would be complete without spending a day at an ethical elephant sanctuary. There are many places where you can interact with rescued elephants in an environment free of riding or unethical practices.
Spend the day feeding, bathing, and learning about these majestic animals in a safe and respectful way. After the meaningful day, head back to Chiang Mai and celebrate your trip with some fresh mango sticky rice or an affordable Thai massage.
Day 8: Travel to Pai
Today, leave Chiang Mai behind and take a scenic 3-hour drive to Pai, a small town in the mountains famous for its laid-back, bohemian vibe. The drive itself is an adventure, with winding roads offering beautiful views.
Once in Pai, rent a scooter to explore at your own pace. Visit Pai Canyon, known for its scenic views, and relax in the natural hot springs nearby. Spend the evening strolling through Pai’s walking street, sampling local food and grabbing handicrafts from the night market.
Day 9: Explore Pai’s Outdoor Adventures
Spend today exploring Pai’s natural beauty. Visit Mo Paeng Waterfall, where you can swim or slide down the rocks into the water below. Afterwards, take a ride out to the Bamboo Bridge, a long stretch of bridge snaking through picturesque rice paddies.
In the afternoon, maybe try a yoga class or relax in one of Pai’s many chill cafés. In the evening, watch a stunning sunset at the Pai Land Split, where locals often sell snacks and drinks to visitors.
