Day 1: Arrival in Sana’a
Your journey begins in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have a relaxing first day and settle in after your flight.
Explore the Old City. Wander through the narrow alleys and appreciate the iconic multistory buildings with their distinctive brown bricks and white gypsum patterns. Grab a coffee at one of the local cafes and people-watch for a bit.
Day 2: Exploring Sana’a
Today, dive deeper into Sana’a. Visit Bab al-Yemen, the historic gateway to the old city. From bustling markets to quirky vendors, there’s a lot to soak in here. Spend time in the souks and haggle for local crafts.
Head to the Al Saleh Mosque, one of the largest in the Middle East. It’s open to non-Muslim visitors, so take time to appreciate its intricate design. End the day with a relaxing dinner at a traditional Yemeni restaurant.
Day 3: Day Trip to Wadi Dhahr
Take a short day trip outside the city to Wadi Dhahr. The star of the show here is the Dar Al-Hajar, also known as the Rock Palace. Built atop a rock formation, it looks like something out of a fairy tale. It’s a must-see stop.
The gardens around are perfect for wandering and picnicking. Return to Sana’a in the evening and enjoy a quiet evening stroll through the city.
Day 4: Travel to Taiz
Get an early start and take the scenic drive to Taiz. Along the way, you’ll pass some incredible landscapes. Feel free to stop for a quick photo or two!
Once there, spend the evening relaxing in Taiz. This city has a more relaxed vibe than Sana’a. Enjoy a walk through its streets, grab some traditional food, and get ready for the days ahead.
Day 5: Exploring Taiz
Start your day with a visit to the Al-Qahira Castle. It’s an ancient fortress sitting on top of the city, giving you an unbeatable panorama of Taiz and the surrounding mountains. You can spend hours wandering here.
Later, visit the Ashrafiyya Mosque, which is an iconic site in Taiz. Take some time to explore local markets before having a relaxed evening back in the city center.
Day 6: Hiking Jebel Saber
Get ready for one of the highlights of your trip: hiking Jebel Saber. This mountain offers a refreshing experience in terms of both views and climate. The peak has stunning views of Taiz and the surrounding areas.
It’s not a difficult hike, but give yourself plenty of time. Enjoy nature, take photos, and let the fresh air energize you. After your hike, relax back in Taiz for the evening.
Day 7: Travel to Al Hudaydah
Start your journey towards Al Hudaydah on Yemen’s western coast. The route offers some rural landscapes rarely seen by tourists; they are raw and untouched. It’s a long drive, so take it easy.
Once in Al Hudaydah, check out the nearby sea and relax by the coast. It’s time to enjoy a slower pace after some active days inland.
Day 8: Relax in Al Hudaydah
Today is for relaxing. Spend the day by the coastal areas, enjoy seafood from the local markets, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.
If you want some activity, wander through the city and visit its traditional markets. Or, simply take a walk along the coast to take in the rhythmic sounds of the waves.
Day 9: Travel to Zabid
From Al Hudaydah, take a day trip to the nearby city of Zabid, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of Yemen.
This ancient city is known for its centuries-old architecture and historical significance. Spend some time exploring its narrow streets and old mosques before heading back to Al Hudaydah for the night.
Day 10: Journey to Shibam (Manhattan of the Desert)
Leave the coast and head towards Shibam. This is one of Yemen’s most unique cities, famous for its towering mudbrick buildings, nicknamed “the Manhattan of the Desert.”
Once in Shibam, spend time marveling at the city’s skyline. It’s an incredible sight, and the history here is palpable. Stay in a nearby inn or guesthouse and savor the evening in this unique location.
Day 11: Explore Shibam
This day is all about wandering through Shibam at your own pace. Climb one of the taller observation points to get an overlook of the city.
After taking in the views, spend time chatting with locals, exploring inner-city alleys, or relaxing in small cafes scattered around the city. The day is yours to enjoy the unique charm of this place.
Day 12: Continue to Wadi Hadramaut
In the morning, make your way towards Wadi Hadramaut. This large valley is stunning and offers a much quieter experience compared to other spots in Yemen. It’s a nice change of pace.
Explore the valley, visit the old mudbrick settlements, and enjoy the solitude of the desert landscapes. It’s a great day to take things easy and reflect on your journey so far.
Day 13: Return to Sana’a
It’s time to make your way back to Sana’a. Enjoy the transition from the desert back to the mountains as you drive.
Once in Sana’a, enjoy a final evening in the Old City. Grab a meal at a rooftop restaurant and gaze over the city as the sun sets. It’s a perfect way to end your trip.
Day 14: Departure
Your trip through Yemen has come to an end. Spend your last morning grabbing any final souvenirs or walking through the old town one more time.
Make your way to the airport and prepare for your flight home. You’ve just experienced an incredible journey filled with history, culture, and adventure.
