Day 1: Arrive in Baku
Your trip starts in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Once you’ve checked into your accommodation, take it easy. Wander around the city center and let your body adjust to the new time zone.
In the evening, stroll along the Baku Boulevard. It’s a beautiful promenade that runs along the Caspian Sea. You can grab a coffee from a nearby café or just enjoy the views of the city skyline.
Day 2: Explore the Old City (Icherisheher)
Spend today exploring Icherisheher, Baku’s ancient walled city. This UNESCO World Heritage site is full of narrow streets, historic buildings, and local shops.
Don’t miss the Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah’s Palace. Both are significant sites that offer a glimpse into the city’s past.
For lunch, try out traditional Azerbaijani cuisine like plov (rice pilaf) or dushbara (tiny lamb dumplings).
Day 3: Visit the Flame Towers and Martyrs’ Lane
Today, head up to the Flame Towers, some of the most iconic structures in Baku. At night, the towers light up with a mesmerizing display, but the views during the day are equally stunning.
Then, take a walk through Martyrs’ Lane to pay your respects. The site offers breathtaking views over the Caspian Sea, so don’t forget your camera.
Relax in the evening with some downtime at one of the local parks or a small café.
Day 4: Gobustan Rock Art and Mud Volcanoes
Take a day trip to Gobustan, known for its ancient petroglyphs and prehistoric carvings. This UNESCO site is just a short drive from Baku and is fascinating for history lovers.
Afterward, visit the nearby mud volcanoes. This is one of the only places in the world where you can see these bubbling natural phenomena.
Day 5: Day Trip to the Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag
For something unique, visit the Fire Temple of Ateshgah. It’s a fascinating place where Zoroastrians once worshipped the eternal flame that mysteriously rises from the ground.
On the way back, stop at Yanar Dag (Fire Mountain), a natural gas fire that burns continuously on a hillside.
Day 6: Take the Overnight Train to Sheki
Spend the morning exploring anything you might have missed in Baku. Head to the local markets for some shopping or grab any last-minute souvenirs.
In the evening, take the overnight train or bus to Sheki, a historical town located in the north of Azerbaijan. Overnight trains are a fun way to travel in Azerbaijan, with sleeper cabins available for comfort.
Day 7: Arrive in Sheki – Discover the Khan’s Palace
Arriving in Sheki, check into your hotel and get ready for a day of exploring. This town is charming, with cobbled streets and plenty of character.
Start your tour with the Khan’s Palace, a stunning building decorated with intricate stained glass windows. The architecture is unique, making it one of the highlights of Sheki.
Day 8: Explore Sheki and Surrounding Villages
Spend today wandering around Sheki. Drop by the local bazaar to get a feel for daily life. Taste the famous Sheki Halva, a local sweet treat that should not be missed.
If you have time, take a short trip to the village of Kish to see the historic Albanian Church. It’s over 1,000 years old and set in a peaceful rural landscape.
Day 9: Continue to Qabala
Today, make your way to Qabala. This peaceful mountain town is known for its natural beauty.
On arrival, take a leisurely walk in the forests and enjoy the fresh air. Azerbaijan’s landscapes offer a sharp contrast between the dramatic architecture of Baku and the calmness of the countryside.
Day 10: Explore Qabala’s Nature
Spend today exploring Qabala’s outdoor offerings. If you’re up for some adventure, check out the Qabala Cable Car, which takes you high up into the mountains for stunning views.
There’s also Nohur Lake nearby, which is perfect for a relaxing boat ride. Just sit back, take in the view, and breathe in the mountain air.
Day 11: Head to Lahij
From Qabala, make your way to the village of Lahij. This is one of the oldest villages in Azerbaijan, known for its cobblestone streets, traditional copper craftsmanship, and ancient houses.
Take time to wander through the historic streets, chat with local artisans, and purchase handmade souvenirs crafted by the village locals.
Day 12: Explore Ganja
On Day 12, travel to Ganja, one of the largest cities in Azerbaijan. While it’s not as touristy as Baku, Ganja is rich in history and culture.
Visit the Javad Khan Street, with its old buildings and cool vibe. Make sure to also stop at Nizami Mausoleum and the Ganja Khan’s Palace before wandering around Khan Baghi park to wind down at day’s end.
Day 13: Return to Baku
Return to Baku in the morning. This is your chance to revisit any spots you loved or explore new corners of the city at a more relaxed pace. If you missed any key sights or just want to chill at a beachside café, this is the perfect time.
Consider heading out to the Heydar Aliyev Center, a modern architectural marvel designed by Zaha Hadid. The flowing curves of the building make it one of the best photo spots in the city.
Day 14: Departure
On your last day, enjoy a nice breakfast and grab some last-minute souvenirs. Depending on your flight time, you might be able to visit one or two more areas, but don’t overly cram your day.
