10-Day Itinerary for Exploring Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country filled with history, stunning landscapes, and charming small towns. With its affordable prices and lesser-known attractions, it’s a perfect destination for a 10-day adventure. This itinerary gives you a good mix of both well-known spots and off-the-beaten-path experiences without feeling rushed. You’ll have time to explore, relax, and fully immerse yourself in the culture.
Day 1: Arrival in Sarajevo
Start your trip in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Once known as “the Jerusalem of Europe” due to its mix of religions, Sarajevo is rich in history and culture.
After settling in, take a stroll in Baščaršija, the old town. The narrow streets are filled with cafés, souvenir shops, and small restaurants serving delicious local dishes like cevapi (grilled sausages) and burek (savory pastries).
In the evening, wander around and enjoy the vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere. Get some rest after your flight. Tomorrow will be full of exploration.
Day 2: Sarajevo – City Tour
Today is all about diving deeper into Sarajevo’s history. Start with a walking tour. You can book one with a local guide or do some research and explore on your own.
Visit the Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, sparking World War I. Then, drop by the Sarajevo War Tunnel for a sobering reminder of the city’s experience during the siege in the 1990s.

Don’t miss the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and Sebilj Fountain. Both are historical and cultural hotspots. End your day with a ride up the Sarajevo Cable Car for wonderful views of the city and surrounding mountains.
Day 3: Relax and Explore Vrelo Bosne
You’ve had a couple of busy days, so today is about taking it a bit slower. Head over to Vrelo Bosne, a park just outside of the city with peaceful walking paths and natural springs.
You can even take a horse-drawn carriage if you’re feeling fancy. It’s a perfect way to recharge and prepare for the next leg of the trip.
In the evening, take a stroll back in Baščaršija to soak in the nighttime charm of the old town with dinner at a local spot.
Day 4: Mostar and Blagaj
Time to leave Sarajevo and head south to Mostar. It’s about a two-hour bus ride, and you’ll pass by some beautiful scenery along the way.
Mostar is famous for its picturesque old bridge (Stari Most). Spend your morning exploring the Old Town. Wander through the cobbled streets, visit small shops, and stop to watch divers jump off the bridge into the Neretva River.
In the afternoon, take a short trip to Blagaj, about 20 minutes from Mostar. Blagaj features the stunning Blagaj Tekija, a Sufi monastery set on the banks of the Buna River under a towering cliff. Enjoy the serene atmosphere and grab a coffee by the water before heading back to Mostar in the evening.

Day 5: Exploring the Herzegovina Region
Make today a road trip day! Continue your journey in the Herzegovina region with visits to some of its hidden gems.

First, head to Kravica Waterfalls, a stunning spot for swimming and relaxing. While it’s more popular in the summer, it’s beautiful year-round with its lush surroundings and flowing cascades.
Next, stop by the town of Počitelj, which looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. This small fortified town on a hill is a great place to stroll around and capture panoramic views of the valley below.
End your day back in Mostar with dinner at a restaurant by the river.

Day 6: Trebinje
Today, drive or take a bus to Trebinje, a charming town near the border of Montenegro. Trebinje is a quiet getaway compared to bigger cities.
Start your day with a walk through the town’s old bazaar, and then visit the Arslanagić Bridge, another impressive Ottoman-era bridge, but far less touristy than Mostar’s.
Spend the afternoon sipping local wine at one of Trebinje’s famous vineyards like Vukoje Winery. The region is well-known for its quality wine, so take your time to enjoy it.

Day 7: Sutjeska National Park
Ready for some nature? Head to Sutjeska National Park, home to one of the last primeval forests in Europe and the magnificent peaks of Maglić Mountain.
If you’re into hiking, take the trails to explore Perućica Forest or the Trnovačko Lake. The untouched nature and stunning views are worth the effort.
Not up for a long hike? You can still enjoy walking around the park’s beautiful surroundings. Either way, spend the night near the park in one of the lodges or cabins.
Day 8: Jablanica and the Neretva River
On your way back to Sarajevo, stop by Jablanica, another town sitting along the Neretva River. It’s famous for its WWII history, but beyond that, it’s a great spot to try slow-cooked lamb, a local specialty.
If you’re into history, visit the museum dedicated to the Battle of the Neretva, where Tito’s Partisans managed a miraculous crossing during WWII. The destroyed bridge from the battle still stands as a powerful symbol.
This stop offers a more relaxed vibe before heading back to Sarajevo. Spend about half the day here before returning to the capital for the night.
Day 9: Relax in Sarajevo and Optional Day Trip
Today is your last full day in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Use this time to relax and do whatever was left on your list. Stroll through Sarajevo at your own pace and indulge in a bit more local cuisine. Carve out some time for souvenir shopping if you haven’t already.
If you feel like venturing out, you can take a short trip to Lukomir, the highest village in the country. It’s around an hour and a half from Sarajevo and gives you a glimpse into traditional Bosnian life. The village is often cut off by snow during winter, but otherwise, it’s a peaceful place to experience rural life.
Day 10: Departure
Your journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina comes to an end today. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for one last coffee in Baščaršija or a quick visit to a nearby museum.
If you’re flying early, make sure to leave for the airport with plenty of time. Sarajevo’s airport is just a short distance from the city center. End your trip on a high note and start planning when you’ll return to this hidden gem in the Balkans!
