Day 1: Arrival in Sarajevo
Start your trip in the capital, Sarajevo. After you arrive and settle in, take some time to wander around Baščaršija, the old bazaar. Grab some ćevapi at a local restaurant and enjoy the city’s Ottoman charm. Don’t miss the Sebilj Fountain in the heart of the square.
In the afternoon, visit the Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, sparking World War I. Wrap up the day by exploring the city’s history at the Sarajevo War Tunnel. Despite its heavy past, you’ll feel Sarajevo’s resilient spirit throughout.
Day 2: Deep Dive into Sarajevo
Today, dive deeper into what Sarajevo has to offer. Start with a visit to Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques in the country. Then, walk over to the fascinating Sarajevo City Hall, known as Vijećnica, which combines stunning Austro-Hungarian architecture with Ottoman influences.
In the afternoon, head up to the Yellow Fortress for beautiful views over the city. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful sunset. For dinner, try one of the local restaurants that serve Bosnian specialties like burek or japrak (stuffed grape leaves).
Day 3: Day Trip to Vrelo Bosne & Surroundings
Get out of the city and spend some time in nature. Head to Vrelo Bosne Park in Ilidža, where the river Bosna has its source. The park is a peaceful place to walk, bike, or just relax next to the flowing water and lush greenery.
After visiting the park, stop by the nearby Roman Bridge, a beautiful reminder of the region’s ancient history. If you have time, visit the shaded cafés around Ilidža for some refreshments.
Day 4: Travnik and Jajce
Rent a car or join a tour and head towards Travnik, around one-and-a-half hours away. Visit the Travnik Fortress and take in the panoramic views of the town. Don’t forget to taste Travnik’s famous cheese before leaving.
On your way back to Sarajevo, make a stop in Jajce, a town known for its stunning waterfall located in the center. You can also check out the Jajce Catacombs and the 14th-century fortress here. It’s a long day, but worth every minute.
Day 5: Mostar
Hit the road early and head south to Mostar. Known for its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge), this town will win you over at first sight. Spend the day strolling through the charming Old Town, and don’t miss watching the brave local divers jump from the 24-meter-high bridge.
Stop by Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque for some stunning views over the Old Bridge, especially at golden hour. Spend the evening at a riverside café and enjoy some relaxing time while you soak in the town’s atmosphere.
Day 6: Exploring Mostar’s Surroundings
Today, venture outside the city for a day trip. Start at the nearby village of Blagaj, famous for the riverside Dervish Monastery (Tekija). The dramatic setting by the karst spring makes it one of the most picturesque places in the region.
After, head over to Počitelj, a medieval Ottoman town that feels like a step back in time. Take your time exploring its stone houses and climb the fortress for amazing views of the Neretva River.
Day 7: Relaxing in Mostar
After a few busy days, take it easy today. Spend some time lounging by the river or grab a book and relax at one of the quiet cafés. If you’re up for more exploration, visit the nearby Kravica Waterfall for a refreshing swim.
In the evening, take a walk along Mostar’s charming side streets and enjoy another fantastic Bosnian meal. Many restaurants offer traditional dishes like stuffed peppers and moussaka.
Day 8: Trekking in the Mountains
Leave Mostar behind and head for the hills. Make your way to the mountains around the town of Konjic, where outdoor adventures await. Take a hike through the beautiful landscapes of Bjelašnica or Prenj, two of the major mountain ranges in the area.
If you prefer more adrenaline-pumping activities, white water rafting on the Neretva River is a great option. Konjic is the base for many tours and you can book a day trip easily.
Day 9: Visiting Lukomir Village
Today, head to Lukomir, one of Bosnia’s most isolated and historic villages. Located high in the Dinaric Alps, this village seems frozen in time. You’ll get unique insights into Bosnian rural life and hospitality, which make it an unforgettable experience.
Stroll quietly through the stone houses, enjoy traditional Bosnian coffee with locals, and take in the surrounding views. This is slow travel at its best.
Day 10: Journey to Neum (Bosnia’s Coastline)
Make your way to Bosnia’s small stretch of Adriatic coastline in Neum. While Bosnia is better known for its mountains than its beaches, Neum offers some nice breaks by the sea. Spend the day unwinding on the beach and soaking in the sun.
This is your chance to have a slower, more relaxed day before continuing your journey inland again. Enjoy some fresh seafood at a restaurant in the evening while watching the sunset.
Day 11: Trebinje
Head towards Trebinje in the southeast of the country. This off-the-beaten-path town is known for its Mediterranean feel and vineyard-laden hills. Spend the day exploring the Old Town, visiting the large stone Arslanagić Bridge, and enjoying a wine tour at one of the local wineries.
Trebinje is much quieter than cities like Mostar or Sarajevo, making it a perfect place to escape the crowds and relax.
Day 12: Sutjeska National Park
Drive toward Sutjeska National Park, one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest and most beautiful parks. If you love nature, you’ll love it here. Hike to the summit of Maglić, the country’s highest peak, or explore the park’s lakes and waterfalls. If you’re up for a challenge, the 22-km-long trail to Skakavac Waterfall is worth every step.
After a day of hiking, you can camp or find a nearby mountain lodge to rest up for the next day.
Day 13: More Nature in Sutjeska National Park
If you couldn’t fit in enough yesterday, spend another day hiking or biking in the park. There are plenty of less-challenging routes that will give you a chance to take in the scenery. Sutjeska’s forests are home to some incredible biodiversity, so see if you can spot local wildlife along the way.
In the evening, take some time to enjoy a quiet evening around the park, perhaps near Lake Zelengora or Tjentište.
