Day 1: Arrival in Almaty
Welcome to Kazakhstan! Start your adventure in Almaty, the largest city in the country. It’s not the capital, but it’s definitely the cultural and commercial hub. After you land, take it easy. Check into your accommodation and stroll around Panfilov Park. Visit Zenkov Cathedral, a beautiful Russian Orthodox Church made entirely of wood, without any nails.
If you have time, head to the Green Bazaar to sample some local snacks. It’s a great way to get a taste of Kazakh cuisine before your trip truly starts. At night, grab a bite at one of the city’s many cafés or restaurants. Try kazy (horse meat sausage) if you’re feeling adventurous!
Day 2: Explore Almaty and Big Almaty Lake
Start the day with a visit to the Museum of Kazakh Musical Instruments. You’ll find all kinds of traditional instruments to learn about. Then, take a short journey outside the city to Big Almaty Lake. This pristine mountain lake is unbelievably scenic and only about an hour from the city. Check out the view, walk around and soak in the atmosphere of the Tien Shan mountains.
Return to Almaty in the afternoon and spend the evening walking around Arbat Street, a pedestrian area filled with street artists, cafés, and shops. It’s a great spot to grab a souvenir or two.
Day 3: Medeu and Shymbulak
Today, head to Medeu, the world’s highest ice skating rink. Even if you’re not into skating, it’s worth visiting for the views. From here, take the cable car up to Shymbulak ski resort. During the winter, it’s a snowy paradise, but even in the summer, you can take hikes and enjoy the incredible mountain scenery.
After a day in the fresh mountain air, return to Almaty and enjoy a laid-back evening. Grab dinner at a local restaurant and unwind.
Day 4: Day Trip to Charyn Canyon
It’s time for a day trip! Head to Charyn Canyon, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Central Asia.” The canyon is about 4 hours from Almaty, so be prepared for a long drive, but the views are worth it. Hike around the “Valley of Castles,” where the rock formations are truly amazing.
Packed lunch in hand, you’ll have plenty of time to explore before returning to Almaty in the evening. It’s a full day, but an unforgettable one.
Day 5: Travel to Astana (Nur-Sultan)
Today, you’ll travel to Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. A flight takes around 1.5 hours. Upon arrival, take it easy and explore the city center. Astana is full of futuristic architecture, and the blend of old and new might surprise you.
Walk along the new part of the city and pass by Baiterek Tower. Going up to the top gives you a fantastic view of the city skyline. If you have energy left, also visit Khan Shatyr, a giant tent-shaped shopping and entertainment center.
Day 6: Explore Astana
Start your day with the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It’s one of the largest museums in Central Asia, and you’ll learn a lot about the country’s history, culture, and art.
Nearby, head to the Hazret Sultan Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Central Asia. The architecture is stunning and will make for some great photos.
In the afternoon, stroll along the Nurzhol Boulevard, where you’ll see more of Astana’s unique architecture, and stop by the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, an enormous glass pyramid symbolizing the country’s dedication to peace.
Day 7: Borovoe National Park
Take a break from city life with a day trip to Borovoe National Park, about 3 hours from Astana. This park is known for its forested mountains, lakes, and unique rock formations.
It’s an excellent place for some light hiking, picnics, and relaxation. If you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll love spending time here, surrounded by nature. After a peaceful day, return to Astana for the night.
Day 8: Travel to Shymkent
Today, you’ll travel to Shymkent, one of Kazakhstan’s oldest cities. A flight from Astana takes around 2 hours. Once there, settle into your accommodation and get to know this historically rich city. Start by visiting Independence Park, a great place to people-watch and get a feel for the local vibe.
In the evening, visit the central bazaar. It’s a bustling marketplace where you can pick up local produce, try new foods or just enjoy the chaotic energy of the stalls.
Day 9: Turkestan
Today, take a day trip to nearby Turkestan, about 2 hours from Shymkent. The city is famous for the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This incredible piece of architecture dates back to the 12th century and is one of the most important religious sites in Kazakhstan.
Spend a few hours exploring the mausoleum and the surrounding archaeological sites. Afterward, head back to Shymkent to relax for the evening.
Day 10: Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve
Kazakhstan is known for its vast landscapes, and Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve is one of the best places to immerse yourself in nature. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Shymkent, making it a manageable day trip.
Once you arrive, take a guided hike through the reserve. You’ll see amazing wildlife, mountains and the stunning Aksu canyon. It’s a full day of adventure that will give you a deeper appreciation of the country’s natural beauty.
Day 11: Travel to Taraz
Today, travel to Taraz, one of Kazakhstan’s oldest cities, with roots dating back over 2,000 years. A road trip from Shymkent will take around 2.5 hours.
After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon wandering around the city. Visit sights like the Mausoleum of Aisha Bibi and Karakhan. The architecture and history here are fascinating, and the city has a much calmer vibe compared to places like Almaty and Astana.
Day 12: Explore Taraz
Spend today taking in more of Taraz. Visit the Dautbek Mausoleum and the ancient ruins of Taraz. This city was once an important stop on the Silk Road, and exploring it will make you feel like stepping back in time.
In the evening, stroll along the main streets and enjoy some downtime. It’s a great opportunity to take in the slower pace of this historic town.
Day 13: Return to Almaty
Head back to Almaty by train or plane, depending on your schedule and preference. If you take the train, expect a longer trip of about 10 hours but with scenic views along the way.
Once back in Almaty, take the evening for yourself. Go for a walk around the city or revisit some of your favorite spots from earlier in the trip. Maybe even squeeze in some last-minute shopping or enjoy a final Kazakh dinner.
Day 14: Departure or Free Day
If you’re flying out today, take the morning to relax before heading to the airport. Or, if you’ve got an extra day, use it to revisit any spots in Almaty you didn’t get enough of. Maybe hike to Kok-Tobe for a panoramic view of the city one last time.
It’s always nice to end a trip on a slow, reflective note before saying goodbye to Kazakhstan.
