Day 1: Bishkek – Welcome to Kyrgyzstan
Welcome to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan! It’s a relaxed city with a great mix of Soviet history and local culture. Bishkek is a perfect first stop to ease into the country.
Start your day by visiting Ala-Too Square. This is the heart of the city, surrounded by interesting monuments and fountains. You’ll find the State Historical Museum here, which is worth visiting to get a deeper understanding of Kyrgyzstan’s past.
Once you’re done, take a quick stroll over to Oak Park. This is a nice green space to walk around with some unique statues and sculptures. It’s a good break from the busy city streets.
In the evening, head to the Osh Bazaar. This market is a great spot to see local Kyrgyz life in full swing. Try some local foods like samsa or lagman noodles. It’s also a nice place to pick up Kyrgyz crafts or inexpensive souvenirs.
Stay the night in Bishkek and get ready for your adventure into Kyrgyzstan’s natural beauty.
Distance & Time:
Bishkek is your starting point, so no travel distances for today. Everything is within walking distance or a short ride if needed.
Where to Stay:
Backpackers can check out Hostels like Tunduk Hostel or Apple Hostel. For those seeking a bit more comfort, Hotel Jannat or Solutel Hotel are popular choices.
Day 2: Bishkek to Ala Archa National Park
Get an early start today! After breakfast, head to Ala Archa National Park, just an hour outside Bishkek. This is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most stunning natural spots. Majestic mountains, clear rivers, and plenty of trekking trails await you.
You can opt for a short trek to the popular Ak-Sai Waterfall. It usually takes around 3 hours round-trip. If you’re into more of a challenge, longer hikes and climbs to the glaciers are available, but you don’t need to push yourself. Take your time and absorb the scenery.
Pack some snacks or a simple lunch to enjoy while surrounded by nature. There aren’t restaurants in the park, so come prepared.
By the time you head back to Bishkek, you’ll likely be exhausted but happy with your day. Grab a casual dinner at Navat or Arzu, both serve tasty local flavors.
Distance & Time:
Ala Archa National Park is about 40km from Bishkek (roughly 45 minutes by car).
Where to Stay:
You’ll be returning to Bishkek for the night. Stick with your original accommodation from Day 1.
Day 3: Bishkek to Cholpon-Ata (Issyk-Kul Lake)
It’s time to leave Bishkek and head to one of Kyrgyzstan’s jewels: Issyk-Kul Lake. This big, clear lake is surrounded by the Tien Shan mountains and is stunning year-round.
Head to Cholpon-Ata, a lakeside town that’s about a 4-hour drive away. Along the way, you can stop at Burana Tower, an 11th century minaret that’s one of the most important Silk Road landmarks in Kyrgyzstan. There’s also a small museum nearby that explains the site’s history.
In the afternoon, reach Cholpon-Ata and check out the Petroglyphs site. These ancient rock carvings date back thousands of years, and it’s incredible to wander among them with the lake and mountains in the background.
In the evening, relax by the lakeshore. Issyk-Kul is one of those places where time seems to stand still. Enjoy a peaceful walk or just sit back and take in the view.
Distance & Time:
Cholpon-Ata is about 270km from Bishkek. It’ll take around 4 hours by car.
Where to Stay:
Several guesthouses and small hotels are available in Cholpon-Ata. Hotel Kapriz or Raduga Hotel are good lakeside options.
Day 4: Day at Issyk-Kul Lake (Cholpon-Ata)
Today is all about relaxing and enjoying Issyk-Kul. The town of Cholpon-Ata itself offers some nice activities, but much of the magic is simply being by the lake and soaking in the fresh air.
You can join an early morning boat tour to get a different viewpoint of the lake and the surrounding mountains. These tours are usually straightforward and don’t take up your entire day, so you’ll still have time to explore.
After, consider heading to the Ruh Ordo Cultural Center. This interesting place blends different religions and cultures and has some quirky architecture. It’s also well-situated near the lakeshore, so you can walk around and take photos.
Spend the afternoon swimming or just resting by the water. As one of the largest alpine lakes in the world, Issyk-Kul’s waters are known for being quite clean and fresh. Unlike some other spots in Central Asia, you can comfortably go for a swim here.
Distance & Time:
No long drive today. You’ll be staying in Cholpon-Ata for the night again.
Where to Stay:
Stay in the same hotel as on Day 3. Relax and enjoy the lakeside views.
Day 5: Cholpon-Ata to Karakol
It’s time to experience more of Kyrgyzstan’s diverse landscapes. Say goodbye to Issyk-Kul and head east to the town of Karakol.
On the way, you’ll pass through some scenic viewpoints along the lake. Stop for a few photos if you want, but try to aim for Karakol by midday.
In Karakol, visit the Dungan Mosque. This mosque was built in 1910 by Chinese Muslims and reflects a unique mix of architecture. Its wooden structure and bright colors are unlike anything else in the region. Right nearby is the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, another fascinating historical site that shows Karakol’s multicultural roots.
In the afternoon, drive out to Jeti-Ögüz Gorge. This valley is known for its red rock formations and stunning natural beauty. You can either do a short trek into the gorge or just wander around close by for amazing views.
Return to Karakol for a relaxing evening. Try out some local cuisine at the restaurant “Dastorkon,” and taste regional dishes like Karakol Ashlan-Fu (a cold noodle dish).
Distance & Time:
Karakol is around 150km from Cholpon-Ata (about 2-3 hours driving).
Where to Stay:
Guesthouses are popular in Karakol. Look for options like the Green Yard Guesthouse or Riverside Karakol for a mix of comfort and local vibes.
