10-Day Itinerary for Latvia: A Complete Guide

Day 1: Arrival in Riga

Welcome to Latvia! After arriving in Riga, take a stroll around the Old Town (Vecrīga) to get your bearings. The city’s architecture is a mix of medieval designs and Art Nouveau. Don’t miss the House of the Blackheads and St. Peter’s Church. Grab dinner at one of the cozy local restaurants.

Get a good night’s rest since you’ll start exploring more tomorrow!

Day 2: More of Riga’s Old Town

Start your morning at the Riga Cathedral. Take time to explore Dom Square, which is surrounded by cafés and shops. While you’re in the area, visit the Latvian Museum of Occupation to better understand the country’s history. After lunch, head to the Central Market—it’s in old zeppelin hangars, and it’s full of local treats.

This evening, take it slow; maybe enjoy a sunset walk along the Daugava River.

Day 3: Art Nouveau District & Kalnciems Quarter

Riga is famous for its Art Nouveau architecture. Spend the day walking the streets of the Art Nouveau district around Alberta Iela. The stunning buildings here are works of art themselves.

Later, visit Kalnciems Quarter, an area known for craft markets and street food. If you’re visiting during the weekend, you might catch some live music too.

Day 4: Day Trip to Jūrmala

Take a short train ride to the seaside town of Jūrmala. This beach resort is known for its long stretch of white sand and beautiful wooden houses. Take a walk along the beach or dip your toes in the Baltic Sea. Don’t forget to check out the Dzintari Forest Park for a quiet stroll through nature.

Relax in one of the many spas in the afternoon or rent a bike to explore the area further. In the evening, head back to Riga.

Day 5: Cēsis & Gauja National Park

Start early for a trip to Cēsis, a charming town about two hours from Riga. Visit the Cēsis Castle for spectacular views and learn its medieval history. Afterward, spend some time wandering the quaint streets.

Next, visit Gauja National Park, Latvia’s largest national park. Take a hike or canoe along the Gauja River for a peaceful afternoon in nature. Spend the night in Cēsis if you feel like you need more time here.

Day 6: Sigulda & Turaida Castle

If you’re staying in Cēsis, take a short drive to Sigulda. Start your day with a visit to Turaida Castle, an impressive red-brick fortress with amazing views of the surrounding area. There’s also a sculpture park nearby that’s worth exploring.

Take the cable car across the Gauja Valley for more stunning views, or hike one of the many trails in the area. By the late afternoon, head back to Riga for the night.

Day 7: Kuldīga & Venta Rapid (Ventas Rumba)

Take a day trip to Kuldīga, a beautiful historic town in western Latvia. The town itself is lovely, but the highlight is the Venta Rapid—the widest waterfall in Europe! Spend some time walking around, and if you’re visiting in summer, this is a popular spot for swimming.

Afterward, enjoy a leisurely lunch in town before heading back to Riga in the evening.

Day 8: Rundāle Palace

Head out this morning to Rundāle Palace, often called the “Versailles of Latvia.” The palace was designed by the same architect who worked on the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Marvel at the richly decorated rooms and take some time to stroll through the sprawling gardens.

After returning to Riga in the afternoon, spend your evening relaxing or checking out any part of the city you missed earlier in the trip.

Day 9: Free Day to Explore Riga or Take a Short Day Trip

Today is a bit more flexible. If you feel like exploring Riga further, you could visit the Latvian National Art Museum, or perhaps hop on a bike and explore the city’s parks. Another option is a short trip to the town of Salaspils to see the poignant Salaspils Memorial Ensemble.

If you’d prefer to take things easy, grab a coffee at a local café and just wander around the city, soaking in Riga’s atmosphere.

Day 10: Departure

It’s your last day! Depending on your flight time, squeeze in a last bit of sightseeing or shopping. Pick up some souvenirs at local shops or markets before heading to the airport.

Safe travels and hopefully Latvia has left a lasting impression on you!

Tips for Your Trip:

– Latvia uses euros, so it’s easy to manage currency. Most places accept credit cards, but it’s always good to have some cash on hand, especially outside major cities.

– English is widely spoken in Riga and other tourist spots, but learning some basic Latvian phrases like “Paldies” (Thank you) or “Lūdzu” (Please) can be a nice touch.

– Latvia has a well-functioning public transportation system—especially in Riga. Outside the city, renting a car may be more convenient.

– Keep in mind that many attractions, especially outside Riga, close earlier than you might expect, particularly in winter.

Enjoy your adventure!
