14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Lithuania

Day 1: Arrival in Vilnius

Start your Lithuanian adventure by landing in the capital, Vilnius. Once you’ve checked into your hotel or Airbnb, take it easy and stroll around the Old Town. It’s one of the most well-preserved in Europe. Wander down narrow cobblestone streets, and you’ll see charming squares, baroque buildings, and street art. End your first night with a traditional Lithuanian dinner. Try places like Senoji Trobelė or Lokys. Don’t miss the “cepelinai,” Lithuania’s famous potato dumplings.

Day 2: Explore the Highlights of Vilnius

Today is all about seeing Vilnius’ main attractions. Start your day by visiting the stunning Gediminas Tower. It offers panoramic views of the city. Then, head over to the Vilnius Cathedral and its iconic bell tower. Stop by the Presidential Palace as you head towards the “Republic of Užupis,” a quirky artistic district with its own constitution. You’ll find sculptures, street art, and cozy cafes. In the late afternoon, visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights to learn more about Lithuania’s history under Soviet rule. Wind down the evening with a walk through Bernardine Park.

Day 3: Day Trip to Trakai Castle

Just a short 30-minute trip from Vilnius is Trakai, famous for its fairytale-like castle located on an island in a stunning lake. You can take a bus or train from Vilnius. Spend your day exploring this medieval masterpiece and learning about Lithuania’s medieval history. You can also rent pedal boats or kayaks and enjoy the lake. Don’t leave without trying the local Karaite specialties, especially “kibinai,” a type of pastry filled with meat. When you return to Vilnius in the evening, have a relaxing meal at one of the numerous restaurants in town.

Day 4: Drive to Kaunas

Rent a car and make your way to Lithuania’s second-largest city, Kaunas, about an hour and a half away by car. Along the way, you might want to stop by the Ninth Fort, a grim but significant World War II site where you can learn about Lithuania’s darker times. Once in Kaunas, explore the Old Town, with its baroque buildings and wide pedestrian streets. Visit the Kaunas Castle and the House of Perkūnas. Kaunas has a more laid-back vibe than Vilnius, so enjoy a slow evening exploring cafes and bars along Laisvės Alėja, the main pedestrian street.

Day 5: Off the Beaten Path in Kaunas

Kaunas has a thriving alternative art scene, so today is all about delving into unique and lesser-known spots. Start your morning visiting the Devil’s Museum—it’s one of the most unique museums in Europe and houses over 3,000 devil-related artifacts. Then, take a walk up to the Christ’s Resurrection Basilica for some excellent views. The afternoon can be spent at the Kaunas Botanical Garden, where locals enjoy peaceful walks. If you’re a street art lover, grab a Kaunas street art map and go hunting for murals throughout the city. Wind down with some craft Lithuanian beer at Vingiu Dubingiu pub or hop to one of Kaunas’ many cozy cafes.

Walk along the famous Palanga Pier for a breathtaking sunset over the Baltic Sea. Don’t miss out on some Lithuanian beach treats like smoked fish from the local vendors. The ambiance here is relaxed and perfect for winding down in nature.

Day 11: Off-the-Beaten Path in Samogitia

Leave the coast and head towards Samogitia National Park. In this underappreciated part of Lithuania, you’ll wander dense forests and sparkling lakes. Your final day is all about unwinding. Take a slow morning sipping coffee in one of Vilnius’ many cozy cafes. Explore anything you missed earlier, like St. Anne’s Church or the Vilnius University campus.
