14-Day Itinerary for Exploring Luxembourg

Day 1: Arriving in Luxembourg City

Welcome to Luxembourg! After arriving, take it easy and settle into your hotel. Depending on your energy level, take a leisurely evening walk through the Grund district. This is the lower part of the city, nestled along the Alzette River, and it’s incredibly scenic. Plenty of cute cafes and bars make it a great spot to stop for a bite or a drink.

Day 2: Luxembourg City Highlights

Start your day with a visit to the Casemates du Bock. These underground tunnels are part of Luxembourg’s medieval defense system and offer an incredible view over the city as well. After that, head to the Grand Ducal Palace to take a guided tour (if it’s open to the public).

In the afternoon, wander around the Ville Haute district, where you’ll find Place Guillaume and Place d’Armes, two beautiful public squares filled with cafes, restaurants, and street musicians. End your day with a sunset view from Chemin de la Corniche, often referred to as “Europe’s most beautiful balcony.”

Day 3: Day Trip to Vianden

Hop on a bus or train to Vianden, a picturesque town about 50 km from Luxembourg City. Spend your day exploring Vianden Castle. This fortress, perched on a hill, is a highlight of the country. Take a cable car ride for some amazing views of the surrounding area.

Have lunch in one of the cozy restaurants in town before spending the afternoon wandering through Vianden’s old-world streets. Return to Luxembourg City in time for dinner or drinks at one of the many brasseries.

Today, check out the Pfaffenthal district. This area is a mix of ancient and modern, with views over the valley and some old industrial sites that have been repurposed. A glass elevator connects the district to Ville Haute, giving you even more cool perspectives of the city.

In the afternoon, head toward Kirchberg, the financial district. While this area is all modern skyscrapers, the Mudam (Museum of Modern Art) is well worth a visit for those into contemporary culture. Afterward, grab dinner in one of the trendy eateries nearby.

Day 5: Relax in the Petrusse Valley

Time to slow down and take it easy. Sleep in, then head over to the lush Petrusse Valley, which cuts through Luxembourg City. The valley is a haven of greenery, picnic spots, and walking paths. Spend a chunk of the day here; it’s especially relaxing after a week of sightseeing.

Feel free to explore some of the nearby shops that cater to locals for a bit of souvenir hunting. If you’re up for more, the Notre-Dame Cathedral nearby is worth a quick visit for its stunning architecture.

Day 6: Day Trip to Echternach

Time for another day trip! Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg, awaits. Start your day by exploring the Benedictine Abbey of Echternach. This abbey dates back to the 7th century, and the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s history.

Afterward, take a walk along the Mullerthal Trail, which offers scenic hiking paths. Known as “Little Switzerland,” the region provides some of the country’s best natural views. Spend the evening back in Luxembourg City relaxing after an adventure-filled day.

Day 7: Cultural Immersion at the National Museum of History and Art

Start the day by delving deeper into the history of Luxembourg at the National Museum of History and Art. The extensive collection covers everything from archaeology to contemporary art, so you can get a thorough understanding of the country’s heritage.

After your museum visit, spend your afternoon blending in with the locals. Hit the local farmer’s markets or visit neighborhood cafes for a more genuine feel of city life. Try some traditional dishes like “Judd mat Gaardebounen” (smoked pork with beans) for dinner.

Day 8: Day Trip to Clervaux

Today, head north again, this time to Clervaux. The village is home to a stunning monastery, but the highlight here is the exhibition “The Family of Man.” It’s a UNESCO-endorsed photo exhibition curated by Edward Steichen that captures scenes of life and humanity from around the world.

Spend the afternoon hiking some of the trails in the nearby Ardennes forest or simply enjoy the peace and tranquility that defines this region.

Day 9: Free Day for Exploration

Today is your free day. Maybe stroll through areas of the city you’ve grown fond of, visit a museum you think you missed, or try out some of the local bistros. You could even check out shopping malls like the Belle Étoile or King Willis Lux Center for something more urban.

The day is yours to shape, so whether you prefer relaxation at a spa or another round of sightseeing, take your time and enjoy it.

Day 10: Hike through Mullerthal

Today, lace up your shoes and return to Mullerthal for a full day of hiking. The region is known for its rock formations, forested trails, and old mills hidden along the footpaths.

The Mullerthal Trail is divided into three main routes, each of varying difficulty. Choose one and spend the day immersed in nature. Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch from one of the local bakeries before heading out!

Day 11: Day Trip to Schengen

Today, make your way to Schengen, the small town famous for being the birthplace of the Schengen Agreement, which allows free movement between European countries.

Visit the Schengen Museum to learn about the significance of this agreement. After your museum visit, relax by the Moselle River with a glass of local wine, as this region is famous for its vineyards and wine production. Return to the city in time for a quiet evening.

Day 12: Remich and Moselle Wine Region

Pack your travel bag and head to Remich, Luxembourg’s main wine town. Take a leisurely walk along the Moselle River and consider a boat trip along the water for fantastic views. Spend part of the day touring one of the region’s many wineries. The local white wines are renowned, so be sure to try a few tastings.

On the way back to Luxembourg City, visit some local cafes to try more regional products, perhaps some delicious pâté or desserts.

Day 13: Esch-sur-Alzette and Belval

Today, take a day trip to Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg’s second-largest city. It’s home to Blast Furnace Belval, a refurbished industrial site that now houses art spaces, cafes, and shops. Walk amongst the imposing steel structures for something truly unique that speaks to Luxembourg’s industrial past.

Spend your afternoon at Galerie Konschthal, which features temporary art exhibitions, or stroll through Esch’s old town. This day is a perfect mix of old and new.

Day 14: Farewell Luxembourg

Spend your final day however you’d like. Maybe it’s checking out any last-minute sightseeing spots, taking a final walk through Luxembourg City’s scenic paths, or revisiting an area you really enjoyed. You might even simply sit at a cafe and soak in the atmosphere before heading to the airport.

Luxembourg may be small, but it is full of charm, history, and adventure. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve not only seen the highlights but have also explored parts of the heart of the country that others often miss.
