Day 1: Skopje – The Capital City
Arrive in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. This city offers a mix of history and modern life, making it a perfect start to your trip.
Spend your morning exploring the Old Bazaar. It’s one of the largest and oldest marketplaces in the Balkans, filled with small shops, cafes, and historic mosques. Make sure to grab a traditional Turkish coffee here.
Next, head to the Stone Bridge. It connects the old and new parts of the city and dates back to the 6th century. It’s a great spot for photos.
Afterward, visit the Skopje Fortress (Kale Fortress). This partially ruined fortress offers impressive views of the city.
For lunch, I recommend trying out some local Macedonian food at a restaurant near the Old Bazaar. You can’t go wrong with dishes like “ajvar” or “tavče gravče.”
In the afternoon, take a walk down Macedonia Square. Here, you’ll find lots of monuments, including the giant statue of Alexander the Great.
End your day by visiting the Memorial House of Mother Teresa. It’s a small museum dedicated to her life and works. Skopje was her birth city, and this site adds an interesting touch to your day.
Day 2: Canyon Matka – A Nature Escape Near Skopje
Today, you’ll enjoy some nature outside Skopje. Head to Matka Canyon, which is only about a 30-minute drive from the city. It’s one of the most popular natural spots near town.
Once you arrive, start with a boat ride or kayak along the crystal-clear waters of the Treska River. You’ll be surrounded by steep cliffs and caves.
After your water activity, hike one of the many trails around the canyon. The views from the top are worth the climb, and the trails aren’t too difficult for beginners.
Just a short boat ride from the main dock is the Vrelo Cave. It’s said to be one of the deepest underwater caves in the world. If possible, join a guided tour inside to see the stunning rock formations.
In the afternoon, head back to Skopje for dinner. Make sure to arrive early enough to one of the local restaurants to enjoy dishes like “šopska salad” and “kebap.”
Day 3: Bitola – A Historic and Cultural Stop
After breakfast, drive or take a bus to Bitola (about 2 to 3 hours from Skopje). This charming city is known for its Ottoman-era architecture and laid-back atmosphere.
Start your day with a visit to Širok Sokak. This pedestrian street is lined with cafes, shops, and old houses. It’s perfect for grabbing a coffee and people-watching.
Next, explore the Heraclea Lyncestis, a well-preserved ancient city located just outside Bitola. The site was founded during the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon and has beautiful mosaics, an amphitheater, and ruins to see.
For lunch, head back to Širok Sokak and enjoy a meal in one of the local spots. Try dishes such as “polneti piperki” (stuffed peppers) or the Macedonian cheese pie called “burek.”
In the afternoon, visit the Bitola Clock Tower and Yeni Mosque. The mosque is a stunning example of Ottoman architecture, while the Clock Tower is one of the iconic symbols of the city.
Wander around after dinner and soak in Bitola’s relaxed evening vibe. There’s always plenty of life on Širok Sokak in the evenings.
Day 4: Ohrid – The Pearl of the Balkans
Today, make your way to Ohrid. It’s one of North Macedonia’s most visited destinations and is great for both historical and nature-based activities. The journey takes around 1.5 hours from Bitola by car.
First, stop by the Church of Saint Sophia. It’s one of the most important examples of medieval church architecture in North Macedonia.
Next, explore the Ohrid Fortress that dates back to the 10th century. The view from the top includes most of the town and Lake Ohrid.
For lunch, find a lakeside restaurant. There are plenty to choose from, and you can enjoy fresh fish dishes like “trout” from Lake Ohrid.
After lunch, take a boat trip on the lake. It’s a relaxing way to discover the beauty of the surrounding nature.
In the late afternoon, visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo. It’s located on a cliff overlooking the lake and offers unbeatable sunset views. It’s a peaceful place to end your day before heading back into town for dinner.
Day 5: Exploring More of Ohrid
On your second day in Ohrid, start with a quick visit to Plaošnik, a significant archaeological site that also has a reconstructed Byzantine church.
Next, visit the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid. This well-preserved theater is occasionally used for performances, especially in the summer months during the Ohrid Summer Festival.
In the afternoon, head to the Monastery of Saint Naum. Located about 30 km from Ohrid, this monastery sits right at the Albanian border. It’s a beautiful spot to explore, and the surrounding gardens and peacocks make it even more charming.
If you have time, visit the springs of the Black Drin River near Saint Naum. There are boat tours here that take you around the crystal-clear waters.
Back in Ohrid, enjoy another lakeside dinner. Don’t forget to try the local “Macedonian wine,” as the country has a strong winemaking tradition.
Day 6: Mavrovo National Park – Nature and Outdoor Adventure
Leave Ohrid early in the morning and drive towards Mavrovo National Park (about 2 hours). It’s the largest national park in North Macedonia and offers plenty of outdoor activities.
Start your day by visiting Lake Mavrovo. The lake is surrounded by mountains and is perfect for taking photos or just relaxing by the water.
For adventure lovers, Mavrovo is great for hiking or biking. There are many trails to explore, varying in difficulty. If you prefer a more relaxing time, pack a picnic and enjoy the natural scenery.
One of the highlights here is the submerged Saint Nicholas Church in the lake. It’s definitely an intriguing sight to see the half-sunken church tower sticking out of the water.
In the evening, check into a cozy lodge or nearby guesthouse to spend the night. This area is perfect for a peaceful retreat, and most places offer hearty local meals in the evening.
Day 7: Tetovo – A Colorful End to the Trip
On your last day, drive from Mavrovo towards Tetovo (about an hour). Tetovo is known for its cultural diversity and its main attraction: the Painted Mosque.
Start with a visit to the Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque). This stunning mosque is covered in bright colors and intricate designs, both inside and out. It’s one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans and definitely worth the visit.
Nearby, you can also visit the Arabati Baba Teḱe, a large Bektashi dervish complex that gives you more insight into the spiritual side of Tetovo’s culture.
Before leaving, grab lunch in the city. Tetovo has plenty of street food options. Try something quick and delicious, like a kebab or a traditional Balkan burek.
In the late afternoon, begin your journey back to Skopje. It’s about an hour from Tetovo, and you’ll have plenty of time to return souvenirs or catch your flight.
