Day 1: Bucharest
Start your adventure in Romania’s capital, Bucharest! This city feels like a blend of old-world charm and urban grit. Spend your first morning wandering through the Old Town. It’s full of history, quirky cafes, and beautiful architecture.
Walk over to the Palace of the Parliament afterward. It’s one of the largest buildings in the world and a remnant of Romania’s communist past. The guided tour gives some great insight into its construction.
End the day at Herăstrău Park. It’s a lovely spot to unwind, especially by the lake, and you might even catch some locals enjoy a boat ride.
Day 2: Bucharest to Sibiu
On day two, take an early train to Sibiu. It’s about a five-hour journey, so grab a seat by the window and enjoy the views of the Romanian countryside.
Once you arrive in Sibiu, take it easy and get acquainted with this charming medieval town. Walk around the town square and visit the Brukenthal National Museum if you’re up for it.
Climb the Council Tower for some of the best views of Sibiu’s iconic rooftops. The evening is yours to explore the small streets or enjoy some local dishes at a nearby restaurant.
Day 3: Discovering Sibiu
Today is all about diving deeper into Sibiu’s culture. Check out the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, an open-air museum just outside the city. It’s serene, full of old Romanian homes and exhibits about traditional crafts.
In the afternoon, take a walk across the Bridge of Lies. Locals say it’ll collapse if you tell a lie while standing on it—so watch out!
As the night falls, relax in a cozy café. Sibiu has plenty of picturesque spots where you can sip a coffee and people-watch the night away.
Day 4: Făgăraș Mountains
After three days of urban discovery, it’s time for some nature. Take a day trip to the Făgăraș Mountains. You can either rent a car or join a tour to explore the famous Transfăgărășan Highway.
Consider stopping at Bâlea Lake, especially during the warmer months. This glacial lake is gorgeous and offers short hiking opportunities if you want to stretch your legs.
If you’re up for more hiking, there are plenty of trails around the lake. Otherwise, enjoy the scenery and then head back to Sibiu for a relaxed evening.
Day 5: Sibiu to Brașov
Leave Sibiu behind and catch a bus or train to Brașov. It takes about two and a half hours, so you’ll have the afternoon to explore.
Brașov is all about fairytale vibes. The medieval walls and Black Church are immediate must-sees. For a great view over the city, hike or take a cable car up Tampa Mountain.
End the day trying some local dishes. Brașov offers a fantastic mix of Romanian and Hungarian cuisine, so give the Sarmale or Kürtőskalács a try.
Day 6: Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress
No trip to Brașov is complete without checking out Bran Castle, often linked to Dracula legends. Take a bus in the morning to reach the castle, which is about 40 minutes away.
Even though it’s touristy, it’s still worth a visit for the history and legend surrounding Vlad the Impaler. Afterward, make your way to Râșnov Fortress, which offers a quieter, more authentic fortress experience.
Return to Brașov in the evening and relax with a drink in the city’s Old Town, where you’ll find plenty of cozy pubs and restaurants.
Day 7: Hiking in Piatra Craiului National Park
If you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll love the Piatra Craiului National Park. Book a day hike through one of the local tour operators or head out on your own. The park is famous for its rugged beauty and diverse trails.
Make sure to pack water and a snack, as some of the hikes are quite challenging. The scenery will be worth it—thick forests, wildflower meadows, and jagged peaks make every step memorable.
After your hike, head back to Brașov for a well-deserved meal and some downtime.
Day 8: Sighișoara
Today, catch a train or bus to Sighișoara. This stunning town is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walk around the town’s cobblestone streets, visit the Clock Tower for panoramic views, and check out the house where Vlad the Impaler was born.
The town is small, so you’ll have plenty of free time to explore on your own afterward. Grab a coffee in one of the quaint, colorful squares before heading to your accommodation for the night.
Day 9: More of Sighișoara
Spend your last full day soaking in more of Sighișoara. Visit the Church on the Hill by climbing the covered wooden staircase—it’s a short hike that’s a bit off the radar but well worth it for the views.
If you’re into historical attractions, check out the small museums scattered across the town. Or, just enjoy wandering through the labyrinthine streets with no real agenda.
In the evening, find a traditional Romanian restaurant and treat yourself to a hearty meal. It’s a quiet town, so enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before heading to bed.
Day 10: Return to Bucharest
It’s time to wrap up your exploration of Romania. Catch a morning train back to Bucharest; it’s about a five-hour journey, so bring a book or download some podcasts.
Once you arrive in Bucharest, spend your last evening unwinding in one of the city’s parks or cafes. If you missed any sights on your first day, now’s your chance to squeeze them in.
Reflect on your journey through Romania during your final dinner in town. You’ve visited some incredible places and experienced a mix of culture, history, and nature.
