5-Day Itinerary for Traveling Through Romania
Romania is a country full of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes. With a mix of medieval castles, vibrant cities, and stunning natural scenery, Romania offers travelers a lot to see within a short timeframe. This 5-day itinerary will help you see the highlights without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Bucharest – Exploring the Capital
Start your Romanian adventure in Bucharest, the country’s bustling capital. It’s a blend of old-world charm and modern life.
In the morning, head to the Palace of the Parliament. This massive building is the second-largest administrative building in the world and a symbol of Romania’s communist past. You can take guided tours of the interior, which showcase its grand marble halls and intricate details.
Afterward, take a stroll down Calea Victoriei, one of the oldest streets in Bucharest. It’s perfect for exploring some of the city’s best landmarks such as the Romanian Atheneum, a concert hall, and Revolution Square, which played a key role in Romania’s 1989 revolution.
Grab lunch at Caru’ cu Bere, a historic restaurant that’s famous for traditional Romanian food and a great atmosphere.

Once in Brașov, head to the Council Square (Piața Sfatului), the city’s main square, and climb up to the Black Church, the largest Gothic church in Romania. The panoramic view from Tampa Mountain is also a must-see. If you’re short on time, you can take the cable car up the mountain to enjoy a wonderful lookout over the city.
Stroll around the city center in the evening, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants serving traditional Romanian food. Try “papanași” for dessert, a traditional Romanian doughnut.
Day 3: Bran Castle – The Legendary Dracula’s Castle
Today, travel to Bran, located roughly 30 minutes from Brașov. Bran Castle is often referred to as “Dracula’s Castle” though its connection to Vlad the Impaler is minimal. Regardless, it’s a must-visit due to its dramatic and eerie atmosphere. Take a self-guided tour of the castle and learn about its history as well as the Dracula legend that surrounds it.
Spend some time wandering the local market just outside the castle. You’ll find a wide variety of Romanian crafts, souvenirs, and snacks here.
From Bran, you could also make a short detour to Rasnov Fortress, just 20 minutes away by car. This medieval fortress offers incredible views over the surrounding countryside and is less crowded than Bran Castle.
Return to Brașov in the evening. After a day of sightseeing, relax at one of the city’s laid-back cafes or try one of the local beers.
Day 4: Sibiu – Medieval Romania
On day four, head west to Sibiu, about 2.5 hours by car or train from Brașov. Sibiu is one of Romania’s most beautiful medieval cities, and it’s full of charm and character.
Start your day with a walk around the Large Square (Piața Mare) and explore the nearby Small Square (Piața Mică) and Huet Square. These three squares are full of historic buildings, colorful architecture, and museums. Don’t miss the Council Tower for a sweeping view of the old town.
Visit Brukenthal National Museum, housed within a beautiful Baroque palace. This museum contains collections of Romanian and European art, all in an impressive historical setting.
For lunch, order some traditional Romanian food or try one of the many German-influenced dishes in the city’s local restaurants. Due to its Saxon history, Sibiu has a unique blend of cultural flavors.
In the evening, take a walk across the Bridge of Lies, which is the oldest cast-iron bridge in Romania. Legend says that if you tell a lie while standing on the bridge, it will creak or collapse! Thankfully, that’s only a myth, so feel free to take your time enjoying the view from there.
Day 5: Sibiu to Sighișoara – Romania’s Best-Preserved Medieval Fortress
For your final day, we’ll take a short trip to Sighișoara, located about 1.5 hours from Sibiu. Sighișoara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for being one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe.
Start by climbing the Clock Tower, which is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. From the top, you’ll get beautiful views over the colorful rooftops that stretch through the narrow streets below.
Walk through the Scholar’s Staircase, a covered wooden stairway that leads up to the Church on the Hill and the old cemetery. This is one of the more peaceful spots in Sighișoara, with beautiful medieval gravestones and views over the town.
While in Sighișoara, visit Vlad Dracul’s House, where the legendary Vlad the Impaler (aka Dracula) was born. It’s now a restaurant, but you can stop in for coffee and admire the historical significance.
Spend the rest of your afternoon wandering the Old Town at your leisure. The cobbled streets, pastel-colored houses, and medieval feel make it a great place to walk around and explore at a slower pace.
In the evening, return to Sibiu or head back to Brașov or Bucharest to end your Romanian adventure.
