5-Day Itinerary for Traveling Through Sweden
Sweden is a land full of breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cities. This 5-day itinerary covers a bit of everything, from culture and history to nature and relaxation. I made sure it’s not too rushed and leaves ample room for you to explore at your own pace.
Day 1: Stockholm – Exploring the Capital
Morning: Gamla Stan (Old Town)
Start your first day in Stockholm by heading to Gamla Stan. This is the oldest part of the city, filled with cobblestone streets and colorful buildings. Don’t miss Stortorget, the picturesque square at the heart of Gamla Stan. You can visit the Nobel Museum, which sheds light on the Nobel Prize’s history, or simply enjoy wandering through the alleys.
Afternoon: The Royal Palace & Parliament
After exploring Gamla Stan, visit the Royal Palace, one of the largest in Europe. You can tour the palace if you’re into history, or catch the changing of the guard outside. The Swedish Parliament is also nearby, and while you can’t tour it without planning ahead, it’s worth walking past to admire the historic architecture.
Evening: Södermalm District
Wrap up your day in Södermalm, a trendy district known for its art galleries, vintage stores, and vibrant cafes. It’s great for people watching and grabbing a drink. Mosebacke Terrace or Fotografiska both offer incredible city views, plus a relaxed atmosphere as the sun sets.
Day 2: Stockholm – Museums and Nature
Morning: Vasa Museum
On your second day in Stockholm, kick off your morning with a visit to the Vasa Museum. The museum houses the Vasa, a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. Preserved almost perfectly, it’s an incredible glimpse into Sweden’s naval history.
Afternoon: Djurgården Island & Skansen
After the museum, spend your afternoon on Djurgården Island. Skansen is an open-air museum where you can learn about Swedish rural life and see traditional houses. If you prefer quiet walks, the island offers lovely trails through forests and along the water.
Evening: Archipelago Boat Tour
End your day with a boat tour around Stockholm’s archipelago. The city sits on an archipelago of over 24,000 islands, and boat tours are a fantastic way to take in Sweden’s nature without leaving Stockholm. Many cruises leave from Nybroviken, and they range from quick 2-hour trips to full-day excursions. Pick one that fits your energy level.
Day 3: Gothenburg – The West Coast Vibe
Morning: Train Ride to Gothenburg
After two days in Stockholm, it’s time to head to Gothenburg. A train from Stockholm to Gothenburg takes about 3 hours and offers great views of Sweden’s countryside. Grab some breakfast on board and relax.
Afternoon: Haga District
Once you arrive in Gothenburg, start exploring the charming Haga District. It’s filled with wooden houses, cozy cafes, and cool local shops. Be sure to try a Swedish cinnamon bun (“kanelbulle”) at one of Haga’s many bakeries. “Kafé Husaren” has some of the biggest ones in the city.
Evening: Stroll Along the Canals
Gothenburg is known for its wide canals and relaxed city vibe. Spend your evening walking alongside these canals, passing by stone bridges and enjoying the quiet. If you’re in the mood for seafood, Gothenburg is a great spot for fresh fish. The “Feskekôrka,” or Fish Church, is perfect for seafood lovers.
Day 4: Gothenburg – Castles and Parks
Morning: Slottskogen Park
Start your fourth day with a peaceful walk through Slottskogen. This large park has a small zoo and plenty of open space to enjoy nature. If you’re visiting in summer, pack a picnic. If you’re there in the colder months, just bundle up and enjoy the fresh air.
Afternoon: Universeum Science Center or Liseberg
After exploring Slottskogen, head to the Universeum Science Center. It’s family-friendly but fun for anyone interested in interactive exhibits about nature, space, and technology. Alternatively, Liseberg, the iconic amusement park, is nearby and has rides, concerts, or even an ice rink in the winter. Check your mood and pick the one that suits you.
Evening: Kronhuset & Surroundings
In the evening, visit Kronhuset, one of Gothenburg’s oldest buildings. There are cute handicraft shops nearby where you can find local products, allowing for some last-minute shopping. Wind down with dinner nearby at one of the local pubs or cozy restaurants.
Day 5: Malmö – A Quick Stop in Skåne
Morning: Train Ride from Gothenburg to Malmö
Your final day takes you to Malmö in southern Sweden. It’s about two hours by train from Gothenburg. You can take a leisurely morning train, arrive around lunchtime, and soak in the southern Sweden vibe before heading back.
Afternoon: Malmöhus Castle & Kungsparken
Upon arriving, explore the 16th-century Malmöhus Castle. It’s not only a historical must-see but hosts a collection of museums inside its walls. After your visit, enjoy a walk through Kungsparken, which surrounds the castle, and offers beautiful greenery and pathways.
Evening: Lilla Torg & Öresund Bridge
For your final evening, head to Lilla Torg, Malmö’s cozy square filled with bars, cafes, and restaurants. This is a great place to sit outdoors when the weather allows. Walk toward the waterfront for a view of the incredible Öresund Bridge, which links Sweden and Denmark, if you have time. The goal of this itinerary is to give you enough time to explore Sweden without feeling rushed. Stockholm and Gothenburg have more than enough to offer, along with a short stop in Malmö to see the best of southern Sweden.
