Day 1: Arrive in Dushanbe

Your journey begins in Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe. It’s a quiet but charming city where Soviet influence merges with local Tajik culture. After arriving, settle into your accommodation and rest up from your travels.

Depending on when you arrive, you can spend the day exploring some of the city’s sights. Start with Rudaki Park, a great place to take a relaxing stroll, and don’t miss the impressive Ismaili Somoni Monument, which honors Tajikistan’s founder.

For dinner, try a local restaurant and sample some plov (rice with vegetables and meat) or qurutob (a yogurt-based dish). Be sure to rest early—you have an exciting couple of weeks ahead!

Day 2: Explore Dushanbe

Today is all about diving deeper into Dushanbe. In the morning, visit the National Museum of Tajikistan, where you can learn about the country’s history. The museum has displays on everything from archaeology to modern art.

Day 3: Drive to Iskanderkul

Today is your first day outside Dushanbe! Begin your road trip to Iskanderkul, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the country. It’s about a 3-hour drive from the city.

Once you arrive, you can walk around the lake, taking in the towering peaks of the Fann Mountains that surround it. This is a perfect spot for photographers because the views are incredible.

For those who are up for a short hike, make your way to the nearby waterfall known as “Niagara Falls of the Fanns.” It’s a peaceful place to just be in nature for a while.

Set up camp or spend the night at a guesthouse nearby.

Day 4: Hike around Iskanderkul or Relax

Today is a flexible day, depending on how you’re feeling.

If you’re up for an adventure, there are plenty of hikes around Iskanderkul, with trails leading through lush valleys and offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

If you’re feeling a bit tired and prefer to relax, spend the day unwinding by the lake. Swim in the chilly waters or just lounge by the shore, soaking in the serene environment.

Day 5: Head to Penjikent

Leave Iskanderkul and make your way to Penjikent, an ancient city along the Silk Road. It’s about a 3-4 hour drive, but along the way, you’ll pass stunning mountain vistas and small rural villages.

Once you arrive, head out to explore the ruins of the ancient city of Penjikent. This archaeological site dates back to the 5th century, offering glimpses into life during the Sogdian Empire.

In the evening, relax in a local guesthouse and try some more Tajik dishes.

Day 6: Explore the Seven Lakes

Start your early morning trip to explore the Seven Lakes of the Fann Mountains. These lakes, with their different colors, are a short drive from Penjikent.

If you enjoy hiking, you can spend the day trekking between the lakes, connecting with nature and capturing those postcard-worthy views. The journey between the lakes will bring you through small, picturesque villages.

It’s an excellent chance to chat with locals, many of whom are incredibly friendly despite the language barrier. Stay overnight in a homestay by the lakes.

Day 7: Return to Dushanbe

Today, you’ll make your way back to Dushanbe. It’s a long drive, so take your time. Enjoy the views of the mountains and the wide open spaces that make Tajikistan such a fascinating road-trip destination.

Once you’re back in Dushanbe, spend the evening savoring a nice dinner at a local café and reflecting on the first week of your journey.

Day 8: Fly to Khorog

Khorog, located in the Pamirs, offers a different side of Tajikistan. Fly from Dushanbe to Khorog (a short one-hour flight). The flight takes you over stunning mountain ranges, which makes it worth booking a window seat!

Upon arrival, explore Khorog’s Botanical Garden, one of the highest in the world. It’s loaded with beautiful flora that survives in these high altitudes.

Spend the rest of the day relaxing or walking through Khorog’s small bazaar. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse.

Day 9: Explore Khorog or Take a Day Trip

Use today to get to know the area around Khorog better. If you want some downtime, explore the town at your own pace. It’s small, but there are plenty of parks and tea houses to relax in.

If you feel adventurous, head out early for a day trip to the Wakhan Corridor on the Afghan border where you can explore ancient forts and hot springs. The drive offers some spectacular views of Afghanistan across the river.

Day 10: Drive to Langar (Wakhan Corridor)

From Khorog, you’ll begin a road trip through the famed Wakhan Corridor. This road stretches between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, offering some of the most impressive landscapes in the country.

Make a stop at Yamchun Fortress, a ruined fortress perched high above the valley, and Bibi Fatima hot springs, where you can take a dip in healing waters.

End your day in Langar, a village often called the “gateway to the Pamirs.” Stay overnight with a local family or a simple guesthouse.

Day 11: Explore Langar and Hike to Petroglyphs

In Langar, it’s all about nature. Wake up and start your hike to see petroglyphs carved into rocks by the early tribes of the Pamirs. These carvings, over 3,000 in number, offer a fascinating look into ancient cultures.

After your hike, spend the rest of the day meeting locals or relaxing. Langar is remote, making it the perfect place to disconnect and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Day 12: Drive to Murghab

Today, drive along the Pamir Highway to Murghab, the highest town in Tajikistan at 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) above sea level. On the way, you’ll go through high-mountain terrain, where your only company will be yaks and eagles.

Murghab is stark, but that’s part of its charm. The town is surrounded by some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the country.

Stay overnight in a simple hotel or homestay.

Day 13: Drive to Bulunkul Lake

On your next-to-last day, drive a couple of hours from Murghab to Bulunkul Lake, one of the coldest places in the country. The lake, surrounded by jagged peaks and wide-open plateaus, creates a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere.

Take some time to absorb the quiet here. If you’re up for it, you can hike around the lake and visit nearby villages where time seems to have stopped.

Sleep in a homestay near the lake.

Day 14: Return to Khorog and Fly to Dushanbe

Drive back to Khorog early in the morning, and catch an afternoon flight back to Dushanbe. If you have time, explore any last sights in the capital, or spend your last night enjoying the local cuisine.

It’s a great time to wind down, reflect on your trip, and rest before catching your flight home the following day.
