Day 1: Arrival in Saint Pierre
Touch down in Saint Pierre, the main island of the archipelago. After the short ferry ride or flight from Canada, get settled into your hotel or guesthouse. Take it easy today. Get your bearings by exploring downtown Saint Pierre. Stroll along the waterfront, grabbing a coffee, or browse the quaint shops.
In the evening, have dinner at one of the island’s local bistros. Dive into some French-inspired dishes with a twist of island charm, like fresh seafood and crepes.
Day 2: Exploring Saint Pierre
Today, explore more of Saint Pierre. Start with the Heritage Museum (Musée de l’Arche). This place gives you a great understanding of the history of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. You’ll learn about the island’s role in the cod fishing industry and its connection to France.
Afterward, take a relaxing walk to the Pointe aux Canons Lighthouse. This spot offers beautiful views of the harbor. Don’t forget your camera!
In the afternoon, head to the monumental General de Gaulle Square, admiring the French architecture and statues.
Day 3: Day Trip to Île aux Marins
Today, take a boat trip to the nearby Île aux Marins. This small island is like stepping back in time. Wander through the abandoned fishing village that was once bustling with activity. You can visit the small church and restored fisherman’s homes.
Take your time soaking in the peace and quiet here. A picnic by the ocean is a great way to appreciate the quiet solitude of this island. Return to Saint Pierre in the afternoon.
Day 4: Hike to Le Cap aux Diables
Get your hiking boots on! Le Cap aux Diables (Devil’s Cape) is a popular hike for its stunning coastal views. It’s about a 3-hour round trip hike, but take it slow and enjoy the scenery. The jagged cliffs and crashing waves are unbeatable.
Once you’re back from hiking, enjoy a relaxed evening in town. Find a local bakery and try one of their famous baguettes or pastries.
Day 5: Visit the Museum Archipelitude
The Museum Archipelitude dives deep into the natural history and geology of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Spend your morning here learning more about the wildlife and environment that make the islands unique.
In the afternoon, grab a bike and cycle some of the quieter roads outside Saint Pierre. The flat landscapes make it a fun ride for cyclists of all levels.
Day 6: Ferry to Miquelon
Take the 90-minute ferry ride from Saint Pierre to Miquelon. Miquelon is larger and wilder than Saint Pierre, with wide-open spaces perfect for nature lovers. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and spend the rest of the day exploring the village of Miquelon-Langlade.
Head to the harbor and admire the old fishing boats. There’s a real traditional charm here.
Day 7: Nature Walk at Grand Barachois
The Grand Barachois is a must-visit on Miquelon. This shallow lagoon is home to a large colony of seals. You can see the seals lounging around, especially during low tide.
Spend your afternoon walking along the coastline. This is great for wildlife watchers too, as you’ll spot many different kinds of seabirds.
Day 8: Full-Day of Birdwatching
Saint Pierre and Miquelon are paradise for birdwatchers. Spend the day spotting puffins, terns, and other species in the more rugged parts of Miquelon. You can take an organized birdwatching tour or venture out on your own.
In the late afternoon, relax with a glass of local wine. Appreciate the slow island life as the sun sets.
Day 9: Trek in the Mountains of Miquelon
Today, you’ll head further inland. Miquelon has some of the only mountains in the archipelago. Hiking Les Buttereaux offers a good challenge and a more rugged landscape. You’ll be rewarded with stunning, panoramic views of the island.
Post-hike, grab dinner in town or head to a local picnic area to watch the stars. With little light pollution, the night skies here are remarkable.
Day 10: Visit the Sand Dunes of Langlade
Langlade is technically part of the same island as Miquelon, but it’s connected via a thin strip of sand dunes. Spend the day on these expansive dunes, which stretch for miles. It’s a beautiful place to wander, secluded and serene.
Bring a hat – it can get windy here! End your day back in Miquelon village, enjoying some traditional French desserts at a local café.
Day 11: Scenic Drive and Whale Watching
Rent a car and drive around Miquelon’s winding roads today. Stop at scenic lookouts to take in the dramatic cliffs and rolling hills.
If the timing is right (usually between June and August), you can join a whale-watching tour. Keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales, as Saint Pierre and Miquelon are prime spots for whale sightings during this time.
Day 12: Return to Saint Pierre and Relax
It’s time to head back to Saint Pierre. Catch the ferry back and relax for the rest of the day in town. You’ve had a busy few days, so today is all about leisure.
Take things easy – you can visit the local market, read a book by the harbor, or enjoy some tea at a café. Let the ocean breeze calm you down.
Day 13: Jeep Tour of Saint Pierre’s Countryside
Book yourself a guided jeep tour to explore more of the island’s rugged landscapes. The guides will take you off the usual paths, and it’s the best way to reach remote coves and viewpoints that you can’t get to easily by foot.
In the afternoon, head to a local restaurant for a farewell dinner. Say goodbye to this amazing place with one final feast of French and island flavors.
Day 14: Departure Day
It’s your last day in Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Spend your morning packing and perhaps one last walk through the town. If time allows, walk down the bustling main street to pick up a few souvenirs.
Catch your ferry or flight out, taking one last look at these charming islands. You’ll leave with a deep appreciation for this little slice of French life in the North Atlantic.
